The left fielder continues to take batting practice on the field and is getting into an extended spring training game is “imminent” according to Bobby Valentine. Rather than travel to Boston for the Opening Day festivities, Crawford will stay in Florida and continue his work. “I heard he’s progressing really nicely,” Valentine said. “The way it seems right now, he’s feeling very good.” Crawford would start out as a DH then work his way into the field. “We’re trying to get a very comprehensive, yet not rushed, program for him,” Valentine said. Crawford would go from extended spring training to a minor league assignment before rejoining the Red Sox. The hope is that will happen sometime in May.

  11. Cook, Ohlendorf dropped from Red Sox roster Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff April 3, 2012 12:07 PM The Red Sox have reassigned righthanded pitchers Aaron Cook and Ross Ohlendorf to minor league camp. They will be in the rotation for Triple-A Pawtucket. The contenders for two roster spots at this point are RHP Scott Atchison, C Dan Butler, INF Pedro Ciriaco, OF Jason Repko, INF Nate Spears and LHP Justin Thomas. That's assuming that Michael Bowden and Vicente Padilla are safely in the bullpen, which seems to be the case. The Sox have to decide whether they want to carry an extra pitcher.
