the smart money was on Lowell experiencing difficulties relating to his hip therefore the smart money was on a need for a middle of the order bat developing as the season went on. the FO doesnt seem to offer up $160 mil to luxuries

If the Yankees set their sights on filling a need with a guy the Sox are after, the Yankees are going to get him, thats the bottom line. You can't fault the FO for not going way above the value they set for a player cause everytime the Yankees do it, it bites them in the ass. I really wouldn't want the Sox to operate that way.

so the John Smoltz experiment is a complete bust based in the 35 or so pitches he threw in his first inning back? by that logic, if he pitched 6 innings, allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, the Sox will have had the coup of the entire 08-09 offseason

it was very hard to predict how this game was gonna go. besides a disastrous first inning, Smoltz pitched pretty well and showed he can still get big league hitters out which is a good sign
