  1. Marlins, Orioles still puzzling over trade scenarios By Juan C. Rodriguez Staff Writer Posted July 20 2005 PHOENIX · A.J. Burnett made his scheduled start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Change the day, opponent and location and the same question remains: Will Burnett make his scheduled start Sunday against the Giants in San Francisco? According to two baseball sources, that may hinge on whether the Marlins and Orioles can determine what to do with Mike Lowell. The Orioles are reticent about taking Lowell as part of any Burnett trade unless one of two things happens: The Marlins can take back right-hander Sidney Ponson, who is due $10 million in 2006, the final season of a three-year, $22.5 million deal. Or they can pick up a significant portion of Lowell's remaining contract. Lowell is signed through 2007 and owed about $21 million, including this season. Problem is the Orioles don't want Lowell and the Marlins don't want Ponson. Lowell doesn't fit into the Orioles' lineup considering they have no plans to move Melvin Mora from third. Adding Burnett without trading Ponson would give the Orioles an extra starter. Ponson has a limited no-trade clause, but the Marlins are not among the 10 teams to which he cannot be traded. "[General Manager] Larry [beinfest] said absolutely no to Sidney Ponson," one source said. "It might happen without Lowell." In a scaled-back version of the deal, the Marlins could send Burnett and Triple-A left-hander Matt Perisho to the Orioles for right-hander Jorge Julio, pitching prospect Hayden Penn and left-hander Steve Kline. For the Orioles to take Lowell, chances are the Marlins would have to pick up no less than half of the remaining $21 million. "The Marlins should jump on that," one of the sources said. "Where are they going to get two good arms that they're going to have under contract for a long time? To get Penn and Julio, [the Marlins] are the ones who should be nervous the Orioles are going to go somewhere else." Should the two teams reach an agreement, the Orioles will request a 72-hour negotiating window to try to work out an extension with Burnett. The Orioles may be willing to go through with a deal even if they don't lock up Burnett, who is eligible for free agency after this season. Reports surfacing Monday of the Pirates being involved in a three-team deal with the Marlins and Orioles that would have brought left-hander Mark Redman back to South Florida apparently were overstated, according to one team official with knowledge of the discussions. The Blue Jays and White Sox could jump back in if the Marlins decide to trade Burnett independently of Lowell. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

  6. OF Adam Dunn, Reds Contract status: Signed through '05 July 15 -- Despite the presence of nearly a dozen scouts Thursday at Great American Ball Park, Reds general manager Dan O'Brien said he isn't trading outfielder Dunn -- not yet, at least -- or anybody else, for that matter, at the request of manager Jerry Narron. "Jerry and the coaches have asked for a few weeks to evaluate the players," O'Brien told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We're going to honor that."

  13. Royals trade Graffanino to Red Sox By BOB DUTTON The Kansas City Star CLEVELAND — The Royals jumped into the July trading season Tuesday afternoon when they sent veteran infielder Tony Graffanino to the Boston Red Sox for two minor-league players. The deal came together in the last 24 hours when the Red Sox sought a replacement for injured second baseman Mark Bellhorn. The Royals received left-hander Juan Cedeno from Class A Wilmington and outfielder Chip Ambres from Class AAA Pawtucket. Ambres, 25, is likely to replace Graffanino on the Royals’ roster, but Cedeno, 22, is viewed by club officials as the key acquisition in the deal. Cedeno is a left-hander with a fastball that regularly reaches 95 mph. He recently converted to bullpen duty and will pitch as a reliever at Class AA Wichita. “We really like his potential,” general manager Allard Baird said. “He gives us another power arm. He shows signs of a plus breaking ball, but that still needs work — as does his command.” Cedeno, 6 feet 1 and 175 pounds, was 2-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 21 appearances at Wilmington. He has 68 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings but also 37 walks and 10 wild pitches. Ambres was the Marlins’ first-round pick in 1998 and spent six years in the Florida organization before signing last November with the Red Sox as a minor-league free agent. He is batting .294 in 83 games at Pawtucket with 10 homers and 50 RBIs in 83 games. That puts him ahead of his career pace — .258 with 67 and 303 in 715 games. “He can play center field and he has some speed,” Baird said. “But one thing we really like is his plate discipline.” Ambres has 153 steals in seven pro seasons, including 17 this season in 20 attempts, and 403 career walks. He is 6-1, 190 pounds and bats and throws right-handed. Graffanino, 33, departs after 1? seasons with the Royals. He was batting .298 in 59 games with three homers and 18 RBIs. The Red Sox pursued Graffanino when he became a free agent after the 2003 season before he signed with the Royals. Boston’s need for a second baseman escalated Sunday after Bellhorn sprained his left thumb while making a diving play against the Yankees. He was placed on the disabled list Monday. kansas city star
  14. PHOENIX — Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett said Monday he expects to be traded before his scheduled start tonight. Sources close to the talks indicate a deal, likely with Baltimore, is nearing completion, although a three-way trade between the Marlins, Orioles and Pirates surfaced late Monday. In the three-way deal, the Marlins would acquire pitcher Mark Redman from Pittsburgh, along with Orioles pitchers Hayden Penn and Jorge Julio and outfielder Larry Bigbie. In return, the Marlins would send Burnett to Baltimore and Mike Lowell to Pittsburgh. Burnett was asked Monday if he thought he'd be a member of the Marlins tonight. "Do I think? No,'' he said. "But I'll be ready if I am.'' Any deal with the Orioles will include Lowell, whose price tag has scared away several teams. Lowell is in the first year of a three-year deal worth $25.5 million, and the Marlins likely will be responsible for some of the money. The Marlins, according to league sources, spoke with Toronto and the White Sox about a Burnett/Lowell package, but neither team was willing to take Lowell. The Orioles on Monday not only were figuring out how much of Lowell's contract they can absorb, but also their chances of signing Burnett long term. Burnett will be a free agent after the season. Lowell said he was told, "the talks are for real,'' by has agent, Seth Levinson. Marlins manager Jack McKeon is laughing off an ESPN report that he could be fired, although one Marlins player said Monday that the team senses McKeon's job is in jeopardy. "I've been through it so many times it doesn't bother me any more at all,'' McKeon said before Monday's game with Arizona. The Marlins entered the game having lost six of seven games. "I go out and do the best I can, if they don't want you, then fine with me.'' Marlins General Manager Larry Beinfest joined the team in Arizona late Monday. Owner Jeffrey Loria was with the team during the weekend but did not travel to Arizona. At least one Orioles player was told to be prepared to pack, according to one source. In a straight-up deal with Baltimore, the Marlins would receive Penn, who recently was returned to Class AA; relievers Julio and Steve Kline and Bigbie. In the three-way deal, Pirates would send first baseman Daryle Ward to Baltimore, and the Orioles also would acquire Marlins Class-AAA outfielder Eric Reed. The Marlins would be responsible for a large portion of Lowell's contract, which has $21 million remaining through 2007. The Red Sox have offered a package that would include starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo but have fallen behind Baltimore. Boston, according to one source, proposed a three-way deal with San Diego that was turned down by the Marlins. "I know it's moving forward,'' a source close to the talks said about a trade. "I can't imagine they believe Burnett would perform like they expect him to (tonight).'' The Burnett talks were on the players' minds Monday, especially Burnett's. He was asked if all the reports were a distraction. "It is,'' he said. "There's a possibility you could have two teams you could be focusing on in one day. You still have to do things to take your mind off of it. I don't answer my phone (except for his wife, agent and mom and dad). My phone has been ringing and ringing.'' Burnett has pitched like he's been distracted of late. In his past three starts he has allowed 15 runs in 15 1/3 innings. His is 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA this season. Lowell and Burnett both were in the clubhouse. Lowell related a story from 2003 in which he was told a trade with the Cubs was a done deal. "I'm pretty much at peace with whatever happens,'' Lowell said. Lowell told The Post on Sunday that he's not surprised he's the subject of trade rumors. "I'm not putting up numbers to the contract that I'm making,'' he said. Lowell was hitting .227 with four home runs and 36 RBI entering Monday's game Palm Beach Post
