BALTIMORE SUN
Though a team source said the club has been discussing for a couple of weeks now moving Ponson to the long-relief role in the bullpen and bringing up Maine, his loss would still leave a void in the rotation.
The hole will not be filled by Florida Marlins starter A.J. Burnett, who is not being courted by the Orioles anymore because they feel that he'll play for them for only two months and then sign a lucrative free-agent deal elsewhere. One industry source described the proposed deal of prospect Hayden Penn, outfielder Larry Bigbie and relievers Jorge Julio and Steve Kline for Burnett and third baseman Mike Lowell as "stone cold dead."
If they get Nevin, the Orioles would have no place for Lowell, whom the Marlins have been insistent on packaging with Burnett. An industry source said that the Orioles plan to be aggressive in their search for a starter before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and that they could offer a package similar to the one that they extended to the Marlins for Burnett. However, they'd prefer not to include Penn.
Some names that could be attractive to the Orioles are Pittsburgh Pirates starter Kip Wells, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Jeff Weaver and the Cleveland Guardians' Kevin Millwood.
