    I'm not denying that a loss of feel will affect the command of the curve. I'm suggesting that the poor quality displayed is more likely a rough start to the year, ie rust, than just cold alone. We frequently see pitchers have masterful control of the curve in sub-40 degree weather in October. It was cold as a witches tit in a brass bra in Detroit last year, but Rogers was snapping off beautiful breakers last October. I think Moose, Pettitte, and Igawa would have fared much better, regardless of temperature, if it was coming later in the year.

    Right now Lidge and Hansen look like the same animal. Reduced velocity on the heat with worse location and less bite on the slider than two years ago. I say keep the younger one since he has more time to fix it. Don't take this to mean I think Hansen will become what Lidge was, but I don't think Lidge will either. I think the old Lidge is dead and gone for good.

    Of course they are, but if you take away some of the feel every pitch is tougher to locate, not just the curve. Do you not see the inconsistency in your point?

    Well you obviously have to turn the wrist over for the spin, but that motion isn't what imparts the spin to the ball. The grip and pressure do. As you note, pressure is important to every pitch, and pressure is the feel of the pitch. Why only the curve balls? Why didn't every pitch suck if they lost feel due to the cold? And, for that matter, since releasing the FB is about feel too, why didn't the FB fail too? I didn't watch every inning of every game during the cold front. Maybe that did happen, but that isn't how you portray it. It was curveball only according to you. That doesn't make much sense, so it looks like spin. Pardon the pun.

    Yeah, I pitched and if you are snapping anything, you are doing it wrong. Breaking pitches are about grip and finger pressure. Hardly something a chill interferes with. If you want to justify their bad starts, just say, "Hey, they sucked this week, but it's a long season", kind of like we did with Schilling. But no, it couldn't be that the Yankee staff had a rough week, it's all the weather's fault. Sad.

    Jacko cracks me up. Couldn't pitch because it was cold, eh? Not the recipe for success when the playoffs are in October. Oh wait, now I get to learn how it won't matter then. *Note: I don't think it matters now, but watching Jacko spin away is pure hilarity.

    It's got nothing to do with the result. I can see the results on Gameday or mlb.tv. I find it annoying for people to do play by play on the board. But, if it helps you get through the day to think that's the cause, then have at it.
