  1. Mark Bellhorn used to have a decent OBP batting in front of Papi and Manny so I really wouldn't worry about Helton. Helton and Drew both takes lots of walks anyways so I don't really understand your argument. Whatever you think about Helton would apply to Drew and Youk as well. Drew had a higher SLG last year which is why I would rather have him #5 although I could see the argument that Helton is a better hitter career wise and should bat there. Keep in mind Helton also hits over .300 every year so its not like hes up there taking strikes.
  2. Helton's only real spots would be 2, 5, or 6. Given his drop in power I don't think the #2 spot is that bad acutally. His insanely high OBP would be awesome in front of Papi and Manny. I think he would bat either 2nd or 5th, and Drew has a higher SLG % which you want in the 5th spot.
  3. Yeah the ball did have a weird hop, just like a lot of ground balls do if you've ever played in the infield before. Which is why your supposed to put the glove on the ground and if it hops up then your body blocks it. Instead he lifted his glove and it went under it because he was trying to play the hop instead of just stopping the ball. Buckner didn't have to charge the ball, he could have knocked it down and crawled to the bag before the runner got there. Awful play and theres no way to excuse it but its not what cost them the game because the game was already tied at that point.
  4. Yeah lets get Erstad for his versitility because he had a 60 OPS+ last year. Nothing like getting a guy who can hit with an OPS just cracking .600. Erstad is a waste of a roster space, Hinske's OPS last year was 113. Hinske is basically a platoon player at this point, he had a .896 OPS vs. righties last year. Thats more valuable than anything Erstad could add to the team. Its really not even close that Hinske is worlds better than Erstad at this point. As for the #2 hitter, Youk is ideal with Drew being a solid option as well. Drew is a better fit for the #5 spot in this roster IMO though. Drew would make a better #2 than Youk but the Sox need an upgrade at the #5 spot and no one else fits that besides Drew.
  5. Someone told me that Pedro adopted his son so if true that would explain a lot.
  6. Keith Law Article
  7. I was really impressed with Pennington today. He had a good game and if the Jets had a better defense they would have been in it at the end. Mangini is a good coach and I was laughing when everyone was ripping him as head coach before the season. Mangini was a solid coach for the Pats and if you give him a couple of seasons he will have the Jets in good shape.
  8. Eh the Pats have played them like crap the last couple of times but the playoffs is always a different beast. I don't think theres any way that the Colts make it to the AFC Championship game anyways. Herm Edwards is such a bad coach BTW.
  9. My favorite from today is:
  10. I agree that Manny will probably still be a better overall hitter than WMP will be in 2 years. Manny will be 35 this season and 36 next season. These are the last two years that Manny is under contract assuming that Manny doesn't have his options picked up. Manny has said before that he will retire when his current deal is up so who knows if he will even play and if he does I doubt he would stay with the Sox unless they picked up his $20M option, which I really don't see happening unless he has a Bonds like resurgence in his late 30's. WMP is still 24 so keep him for 2 years filling in for the aging Manny and injured Drew and let him play fulltime at age 26 in LF when Manny leaves. WMP's power will help lessen the loss of Manny in LF and that way WMP's defense can be hidden more like Manny's has been.
  11. Pineiro will most likely be given a shot at the closers role but I don't see him lasting a full season. He has always had the potential to be a great pitcher but for some reason has never put it together and is in decline by 28. In Gammo's latest chat he said the Sox wanted Pineiro to close early and have one of the young guns as the closer by the end of the season like the Cards did this year.
  12. The Sheffield trade was good because Sanchez actually has upside. Who in the Arizona deal has upside? From what I saw the Yankees are getting the #18-20 prospects in the Arizona system. They are fringe prospects at best, none are even close to having plenty of potential. This is a complete salary dump although they did get a mediocre RP as well in Luis Vizcaino.
  13. Yeah I agree, spring training numbers are pretty much useless unless its a rookie and even then its not that telling. I think Piniero will start the season as the closer and it will be his job to lose.
  14. I see the logic but then theres pitchers like Clemens and Arroyo who weren't actually that great in the AL but then absolutely dominated the NL the next year. Arroyo's ERA dropped almost 1.25 runs, Clemens dropped a full run when switching as well. Interleague play the last couple of years has shown that the AL is better IMO. Its not the greatest indicator either but when was the last time that the NL won an All Star game? 2003 was the last time the NL even won a World Series game before this year.
  15. Yes, the same thing was said when Pedro left town, same thing when Mueller wasn't re-signed. How about we give it more than 1 year and then decided? Pedro's arm pretty much fell off and the FO's is 2 for 2 with the Petey and Mueller decisions. If Damon declines heavily by year 3 it will be a good decision IMO. His defense is already slipping and his arm has always been a noodle.
  16. Supposedly there were some things to work out in the contract still. Maybe MLB didn't allow certain things which happens from time to time. There might be an option or bonus that needs to be reworked because MLB won't allow it or something. Drew will be in a Boston uni next year.
