He also says that he was somewhat surprised at not being picked up by Buffalo as he fully expected a contract offer after the arbitration ruling, but he understands that teams will be faced with these type of decisions. The article also says that Montreal are already at $43.3 million of the max $44 million. Personally, my opinion is that $600K a year would be a bitter pill for him to swallow, unless they free up some cap room for him, especially since the arbitrator awarded him $2.9 million. Well, the Sabres are bringing all but 1 player back who went to Arbitration but JP Dumont (arbitrator awarded him $2.9 million for 1 year, which is wayyy too much). 9 of the 11 were signed to multi-year deals also, this team will contend for years to come. Sabres walk away from Dumont's award 8.8.2006 : SabresFans The Buffalo Sabres have walked away from J.P. Dumont's arbitration award (1 year, $2.9 million). By doing so the Sabres have made Dumont an unrestricted free agent. The move was obviously done to conserve room under the salary cap to sign goalie Ryan Miller and defenseman Dmitri Kalinin. GM Darcy Regier stated that the Sabres made Dumont a contract offer immediately after walking away from Dumont's arbitration award. Regier expects Dumont to shop himself in the market but stated clearly the Sabres would like to have him back if possible. The Sabres tried to trade Dumont and spoke to every team in the NHL but Regier said every trade offer had players coming back to Buffalo. In some cases the players coming back weren't fits for the Sabres, in other cases the cost of those players was prohibitive. Regier hopes to have both Kalinin and Miller signed this week and that would seem to be his next focus.
