  1. now we are hiring guys to help along our so called starters-sheesh.we have another guy snow to go with lowell coming off sub par years, we have holes that needed to be filled and this just doesnt seem to me to be much of a sigining..so he plays an inning or two every other game. I just dont see how we can be so excited about youkillis, as being our everyday first baseman. Becasue he didnt gripe being sent down so many times..come on. Here's another headline: Snow progress With this signing. or Icy Reaction from me about Snow.
  2. here's a headline. Snow Big deal.
  3. youkillis and snow at first...I doubt anyone will be shaking in their boots.. whats that about 10 homers and 40 rbi's for the year cpombined, not exctly the kind of numbers I want too see out of first base, we had that in fat ass. .
  4. i dont think being a prick is hurting him as much as as his numbers put him on the cusp in the opinion of many non redsox fans. I think no matter what they should retire his number though,.
  5. luca brazi would be better in centerfield than adam stern.
  6. read a book, are you mad? Ni just kidding thanks red seat. You guys make a strong case for jim. In terms of power hitters it seems 500 hrs seems be the key--well, dont tell that to andre dawson. I think jim rice will get in this year becasue he kind of deserves it, he's a red sox (okay I'm biased-so i would be happy), and the field is pretty week.
  7. this artcilke makes a case about mattingly, not that I agree with it, but the f*** are wion shares? However, a detailed comparison of Mattingly and Rice would be a good transition to the outfielder on this years HOF ballot, and those who know me best understand that I am all about smooth transitions and sturdy scaffolding techniques. After all, the road to knowledge is built with the bricks made by the idiot who required an village to raise. Total Win Shares Rice 282 Mattingly 263 Rice has the advantage in career Win Shares, but both are under 300, so they would require a hell of a peak to get in. Let's look at five year peaks first: Best Five Year Cumulative Win Shares Rice 142 Mattingly 148 Both have rather impressive five year peaks, with Mattingly having a slight edge. However, things space out a bit over the ten year span. Best Ten Year Cumulative Win Shares Rice 227 Mattingly 241 While Mattingly's peak falls under the gray area of "Is it good enough?", Rice's is closer to proverbial line in the sand. The hair splitters can argue the exact coordinates of that line until the Reckoning, but preciseness really doesn't matter because Rice was an outfielder and Mattingly was a first basemen. Most of the absolute elite position players in the Hall were outfielders. Guys like Mays, Cobb, Ruth, Williams, Musial, etc. walk stride for stride with the baseball gods. In fact, many would argue thay are the baseball gods. Let's look at the career Win shares of LFers in the Hall of Fame: Win Shares Stan Musial 604 Ted Williams 555 Carl Yastremski 488 Fred Clarke 400 Jesse Burkett 389 Zack Wheat 380 Al Simmons 375 Will Stargell 370 Ed Delahanty 355 Goose Goslin 355 Lou Brock 348 Billy Williams 347 Joe Medwick 312 Jim O'Rourke 305 Joe Kelley 305 Heine Manush 285 Jim Rice 282 Ralph Kiner 242 Chick Hafey 186 Monte Irvin 98 Average* 367 *excluding Irvin, who spent most of his career in the Negro Leagues Manush and Hafey are dubious Veteran's Committee choices. Hafey might be the worst selection in the Hall, but that is a discussion for another day, as is Kiner's election. Kelly, O'Rourke and Medwick are VC choices also, but their inductions aren't affronts to decency. The player elected by the writers into the Hall other than Kiner with the lowest Win Share total is Billy Williams at 347, which is light years ahead of Rice. Rice' peak doesn't exactly measure up to left fielders either. for instance, many would argue that Lou Brock is a borderline choice. However, his five year and ten year peaks are better than Rice's. Total Win Shares Ten Year Five Year Brock 348 253 143 Rice 282 227 142 When you get dusted by Lou Brock, you should realize you have to by a ticket to the Hall like all mortals. The only thing that Rice has going for him is five year peak, and that shrivels in the shadow of the LF HOFers. Best Five Year Cumulative Win Shares Ted Williams 221 Musial 207 Yaz 172 Delahanty 169 Simmons 165 Burkett 161 Medwick 157 Kiner 155 Stargell 153 B. Williams 143 Wheat 149 Clarke 147 Goslin 147 Kelley 144 Brock 143 Rice 142 Manush 139 Hafey 116 O'Rourke 110 Rice's five year peak amongst left fielders doesn't rank high enough to stand alone. Considering that Rice brings nothing else to a HOF discussion other than the clamoring of the Red Sox Nation, any attempt to justify his entry is either ignorance or homerism.
  8. if rice gets in then so should mattingly ..IMO. I think Jimbo will get in though because this isnt a striong field, which helps him. I think Blyleven deserves it, he played on some majorly s***** teams and compiled a great career.
  9. dont think he has enough there are plenty of guys like him from Murphy, Dawson, Dave parker,..playing at fenway helped and he couldnt field that well. He only made the all star team 8 times during his career, and led the AL in homers 3 times-doesnt sound like the most feared hitter in the league to me. yount, Yaz, Fisk, canseco...etc.298 average, not 500 homers, and not 3000 hits..a player shouldnt be rewraded for what he might have done if played longer. Hit into a ton DP's. I just think he is on the edge-- and more than anything else that is why he hasnt be elceted to be in. If they lower the bar for him there a bunch of other guys that should be as well. as far as the intrusivenes of the boston press. Barf, that' is their job and if I hear one more athlete complain about the press I might swallow my tongue--bet he's sorry he was such a terd to those guys now. But going into the stand after the yankee fans deserves honoring and should be mentioned on the plaque.
  10. every year this comes up and I thought I would throw it into the mix and get some opinions. personally, as much as I like the idea of any redsox going into the Hall. i cant for the life of me make a case for jim. Besides being one of the world's biggest pricks which in no way should effect his going into the hall, his numbers just were very good and not hall material. 2400+ hits, 380+ homers, those arent hall numbers pure and simple. Some one must think he is Hall worthy it comes up every friggin year. i VOTE no
  11. moreover, I think above else that that level of sarcasm should be commended..
  12. IMO patience is a luxury the sox cant afford for precisely the reasons you stated. If they sit around and wait then they will have nothing. center field/leadoff is just part oft he problem. I dont want to rain on the parade or be negative but we have another potential problem.. foulke is a huge question mark and the thought of starting the seaons with him as our closer is frighetning. Granetd the job is his too lose and we currently have so manyother holes to fill it isnt even funny.
  13. isnt there a talkyankee place for all of you yankees fans to go to annoy and talk to each other rather than come here. there's more of you on here than ever. No offense (well actually quite a bit)...but no really cares what any of you think or have to say. we all are well aware of the championships, we are all aware of the biggest choke in baseball history and we are all aware that yankees fans are obnoxious and extremely boring small minded inbreds-but that's cool you all have each other...so why dont you all go play nicely with each other and leaves us alone.
  14. if the sox sign JT snow I will vomit all over this entire forum.. he makes kevin millar look like babe ruth. This FO is so f***ing cheap -- maybe they can get George scott or mccarty for a few bucks.
  15. thats what you all said about hanely.
  16. i hope so, the market is getting pretty bleak. And while I dont endorse over paying I do endorse not getting outflanked and caught off guard. PLus, all this stuff about oevrpaying-there is no raeson to assume that we are stuck with a guy for an entire contarct, granted it makes it tougher to gte rid of the dude, but a good exmaple is reneteria.. Every one here is so concerned with payroll..I say it might be about time to say f*** it. The yankees dont seem totb e afraid to oevr pay and the club they are compiling is going to wipe up yawkey way.. For all our fiscal repsonisibility we still have the second highest payroll and still pay a luxury tax--maybe it might be time to stop being frugal and say what the f***. Of course, with this attitude it is signicant to point out that my checking account is always oevrdrawn and I am continually short of money. In any event I am growing pretty tired of the we dont want to over pay so and so and this guy and that guy arent worth the money. If we open with cora at short and youkillis at first, I'd say maybe we should have overpaid for someone.
  17. at first I thought that theo leaving wouldnt make a difference and that the trades and management of the club was probably done by a committee anyway. The way in which we are getting out flanked and the way these things keep happening is mystifying at best and horrible at worst. It wasnt so much that damon left that is upsetting it was how he left with our FO being caught so off guard. Granted the game is won and lost on the field but the FO is having a dismal off season and I for one am getting worried and annoyed.
  18. dont push your luck 26 by complimenting george-i'll jst say this he has an obsene payroll, and for not accepting failure he should be getting used to it after topping 200 million and not winning. so it is debatable how well he runs his team. he is an obnoxious ******* and doesnt deserve the respect yo speak of, sometimes maybe envy but respect is by no means a given. But nice try. in any event, I guess the fans in KC and oakland know what we now know, that the guy is a greedy douche bag just like the rest of them. I dont blame the agent as much as I want too, johnny could have a been a real man like Tek and insisted on negotiating like a dude not a greedy pig. Well, now we can add the name damon to the other list of money hungry egomaniacs like pedro, et al. I have a real distase fo major league athlletes at the moment, and much more a taste for poeple for poeple trot, tek, wake who like where they are and what they do. good job by our new GM's. f***.
  19. poor johnny.who can blame him. they were so mean theo, how could he possibily stay in a such a mean enivornment--what a relief it must be to go somewhere serene and loyal...
  20. quiz: what carpet bagging mother f***er, who is just greedy and egotistical as all the other players said this:? "There's no way I can go play for the Yankees, but I know they're going to come after me hard. It's definitely not the most important thing to go out there for the top dollar, which the Yankees are going to offer me. It's not what I need."
  21. speaking of the yankees...are they keeping the fearsome mark bellhorn???
  22. he was one of my favorites and I cant understand how we could let this guy leave. He was a true gentleman, a class act in every way. He had another year or two left in those knees, we are losing a lot by not getting him back, and along with dougie, we are slowly but surely dismantling the kind of chemistry that makes our team great. Not necessarily the best players but the important clubhouse guys. thanks for everything billy, you will be missed.
  23. PS: I wouldnt feel right if I didnt say something about kevin millar: see ya fatass!
