Red Sox placed RHP Jonathan Papelbon on the bereavement list.

It's not known how long he will be away from the team, but a player on the bereavement list must miss at least three games. Daniel Bard figures to get the save chances in his absence.

Red Sox activated RHP Boof Bonser from the 15-day disabled list.

As expected. Bonser began the season the disabled list due to a right groin strain. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 6.34 ERA over eight starts and one relief appearance with Triple-A Pawtucket. He has a 5.12 career ERA over three seasons in the major leagues -- all with the Twins. Though he has mostly been a starter in his career, he'll be used out of the bullpen in Boston.

It will be interesting to see how Bonser does, it'll be tough for him to be worse then Atchison and Schoeneweis.

I don't know why Papelbon was placed on the bereavement list, but hopefully whatever is going on it works out alright. This isn't good news for the pen, but luckily were facing the Guardians, so hopefully pen doesn't factor in for us much in this series.

Oh, and the people calling for Bard as the closer and to trade Papelbon, we may see how he handles save opportunities when he knows he is the closer.
