Could we see Angel’s shortstop Zach Neto in a Red Sox uniform by the August 3rd trade deadline? The idea is not as far-fetched as you may think.

It’s no secret that the Boston Red Sox are interested in the young power-hitting shortstop Zach Neto, as they had conversations with the Angels about trading for him last winter. Unfortunately, the talks didn’t progress.

Flash forward to this season, the Red Sox currently find themselves needing a shortstop.

Ever since Trevor Story went down with a sports hernia on May 14th, the shortstop position has seen quite a few different faces. Marcelo Mayer and Isiah Kiner-Falefa covered the position until they both went down with injuries as well. Isiah Kiner-Falefa suffered a stress reaction in his left forearm on June 18th, and Marcelo Mayer on June 26th with a bone stress reaction in his left forearm.

Since then, the position has been held down by Andruw Monasterio and Tsung-Che Cheng. While they have been serviceable at shortstop, they are not considered to be everyday-type players.

It was reported earlier today by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic that the Boston Red Sox are interested in and view Zach Neto as a “strong fit.”

Zach Neto could be the right-handed hitter that the Red Sox are looking for, as he's slashing .238 AVG, .326 OBP, .446 SLG, and an OPS of .771, with 19 HR and 46 RBIs.

Zach Neto could exploit the Green Monster, as the wall is a dream for right-handed pull hitters at Fenway Park. And with his Pull Air % of 28.2%, his bat would fit Fenway Park perfectly.

Zach Neto is currently 25 years old and still has 3 years of team control left before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2030.

Any potential deals would most likely cost the Red Sox a couple of young guys, as the Angels would almost certainly ask for that. Marcelo Mayer could definitely be one of the players the Angels ask for in return.

Could the Red Sox pull the trigger and make this potential deal happen?

Just a month ago, it looked like the Red Sox season might be over. They were 28-39 on June 12th,  4th place in the A.L. East, and had one of the worst-ranked offenses in the league. They ranked 28th in runs scored, 30th in home runs, 15th in batting average, and in the bottom 3 in slugging percentage and OPS.
Now, in what has truly been a roller coaster of a season for the Boston Red Sox, they find themselves sitting at 46-48, .05 games back of the third wild card spot, having just won 9 games in a row, heading into the All-Star break. Let’s take a look at some of the key contributors to this Red Sox turnaround.
Willson Contreras has been the soul of this Red Sox offense. He's been having a career year. Through 94 games, Contreras has a .285 batting average, 20 home runs, 61 RBI, .379 OBP, .542 SLG, and a 151 wRC+, making him one of the most elite hitters in the game. He was a phenomenal acquisition in the offseason.
It's no coincidence that the Red Sox have gone on this run and Anthony Siegler has been in the lineup. Having been acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, the same trade that brought Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monesterio to Boston, Siegler has been the spark plug that this team needed. He plays with a confidence and high energy that rubs off on the rest of his teammates. Over his last 20 games, he's hitting .256, with 18 hits, 5 doubles, 2 home runs, and 6 RBI.
What a season it has been for Ceddanne Rafaela! On the season has a .281 batting average, 96 hits, 8 homers, 39 RBIs, .328 OBP, .433 SLG, and a 108 wRC+. His production this season has been good enough to earn him a spot on the American League All-Star team.
While key batters have helped spark the Red Sox's current run of 15-5 in their last 20 games, it has been the pitching, more importantly the starting rotation, that has been the backbone for the Sox all season, including in their last 20 games.
In their last 20 games, the Red Sox starting rotation has posted a 3.16 ERA, with an 8.5 strikeouts-per-9 rate, a .228 batting average against, and a 14-6 record. With key contributors in Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, and Jake Bennett, leading the way.
In their last 5 starts, Sonny Gray has a 3-0 record, a ridiculous 1.62 ERA, 34 strikeouts, and an excellent 2.94 FIP. Ranger Suarez, the big splash free agent signing for the Red Sox, has a 2-0 record, a 3.02 ERA, 34 strikeouts, and an elite 2.61 FIP in his last 5 starts.
Jake Bennett, who the Red Sox acquired in a trade with the Nationals, has been what the Sox wanted and much more. Over his last 5 starts, Bennett is 3-1 with an outstanding ERA of 1.39, 27 strikeouts, and a phenomenal 2.61 FIP.
The Red Sox are playing with a different type of energy now, and the vibes are great around the team. And with the potential returns of Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony, the Sox could be set to maintain this momentum into the second half of the season and, hopefully, the playoffs. With the front office having to make a tough choice tonight of whether to buy or sell at the trade deadline, as of right now, being 0.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot, it looks like they should be buyers at this upcoming trade deadline.
Can the Red Sox keep this momentum and ride this all the way into the playoffs? Or will they fizzle out and revert to the awful team they were for the first 3 months of the season? We’ll see what happens. I will be watching almost every game regardless of what happens.

After being defeated 6-1 at Fenway, the Red Sox are now 0-30 in games where they trail by 3 runs or more. The offense continues to be inconsistent and, at times, brutally awful. 13 runners were left on base tonight as the Sox went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. An ongoing theme this season for these Boston Red Sox: the lack of power, clutch hits, and the ability to score runs. Their current offensive rankings are 29th in home runs(59), 29th in runs scored(279), 29th in RBI(268), and 24th in slugging percentage(.383).

For a minute, let’s focus on the positives. Acquiring Willson Contreras was an amazing move. He’s been among the top hitters in the MLB this season. , slashing a .299 Avg, 16 Homer Runs, 43 RBI, a .392 OBP,  .560 SLG, and a 162 wRC+.

Ceddanne Rafaela has been a very productive hitter for the Red Sox so far this season. Ceddanne currently has 24 XBH on the year, with 15 doubles, 2 triples, and 7 home runs. He, like Contreras, is also putting up good percentages, with a .288 Avg, .342 OBP, .453 SLG, and a 118 wRC+.

With their efforts seemingly wasted, the Red Sox find themselves in the basement of the A.L. East, 14.5 games behind the division-leading New York Yankees, while also being 6 games back of the Athletics for the third and final wild card spot.

One could assume that this season would be much different had the front office added more to the offense rather than pivoting to pitching and defense. The pitching has been fantastic. The Red Sox pitching staff finds itself ranked 10th in ERA (3.94), 4th in Shutouts (7), and 6th in earned runs allowed (270). But with one of the worst-ranked offenses in the league, it doesn’t matter how good your pitching and defense are. The inability to score runs, hit for power, or come up with a big hit in a key moment has killed this team.

Can the Red Sox find a way to fix their offensive woes and turn their season around? I’m not so sure about that. It’s June 16th, and the offense has been roughly the same the entire season. They’ve had their shining moments, but more often than not, inconsistency returns, and they are back to being a bad offensive club.
