A. Davis (0-1) vs M.Perez (1-2)
Looks like we got us a BP game. I'm not expecting 6 innings from Davis.
And, hopefully, the Rangers won't get 6 innings from former SOX alumnus Perez.
Go SOX!
Speaking of pitching in regards to SOX and Yankems, Whitey Ford had a career record at Fenway of 7-6 with an ERA of 6.16. So for a large part of his career Whitey, under Stengel's watch, wasn't allowed to pitch at Fenway.
Yup, and he was soon followed by the Yankems' Ryne Duran, he of the bottle neck glasses, which many of his contemporaries believed were nothing but a psychological prop. He always threw his last warm-up pitch up against the netting behind home plate.More psychology.
Btw, during an interview after he retired Mickey Mantle was asked who was the toughest pitcher he faced during his career. Mantle quickly answered Dick Radatz. "I knew he was going to throw me a fastball and I still couldn't hit it."
The Rangers' announcers were discussing Dick Radatz regarding his holding the record for most strikeouts in a season by a relief pitcher. It was in 1964 and he struck out 181 batters while pitching 157 innings. Hell, nowadays, most of these pampered starters don't pitch 157 innings.
I believe Buchholz was the last good starter to be developed in the SOX farm system. I doubt any other team in MLB has a worse track record in developing pitching.
"This time you gave me a Mountain; a Mountain I could never climb.
It isn't a Hill any longer; you gave me a Mountain this time."
Apologies to Marty Robbins.
