  1. Sox just need to strive to play better, much better. The 5 starters need to make up most of the difference. They are all capable of shaving 0.5 to 1.0 runs per game off their current season. Sox need them to consistently pitch 6-7 innings. Alot(not all) of BP issues is too many innings, so they need a break. Also need Betts to continue his improvement. Be nice to see him finish at around .300/.420/.530/.950 with 25 HR's. still a step back from last year but a big step up from the first 3rd of this year.
  2. Bryce is doing just about the same as last year. He never was worth what he got. That was insane. He only had 2 seasons over .890 OPS out of 7 before this year...
  3. Move NC to East, Tor to North, and STL to south with KC. Now virtually all of the regional rivals match up.
  4. And then there was Jeter who metrics said was great and the eyes said he was solid but failed to get to alot of balls others got too, yet JEter got all of the gold gloves.
  5. 6-13 the first 19 games. 13-6 the last 19. Certainly headed in the right direction.
  6. Save that 800k off the cap though...
  7. http://www.espn.com/boston/ to arizona with international pool money for an outfielder
  8. machado to the padres 10yr-300m... Will harper match it? machado is better IMHO
  9. Again. It is smart to trade from a position of strength, or rather excess, to a position of need. THe Sox don't have many excesses, but Catcher, utility infield and 6-8th pitcher are a few of them. Are they huge chips many others want...no. But is you could do a swihart vasquez type 2 for 1 for a competent RP, and "dump" a nunez for almost nothing but salary relief and then bring back kimbrel for a 1 or 2 year last man standing type deal wouldn't that be a good idea? Would make them use replacement level players in case of injuries, but to start the year with such a big hole in concerning to me. Here's to hoping kimbrel has no seat to sit in and will take what we can free up to offer. I doubt we can do better with the capital we have left.
  10. Certainly an arguable point. When you factor in Offense, defense, salary, and potential none of them are terrible, but none are awesome either. The good thing is their pay is about right to match their abilities.
  11. Like always the consideration is to fill weak spots by spending capital. Sometimes the capital runs out faster than others, and sometimes there isn't enough capital to fill all of the holes. IN baseball the capital is picks, international money, free agent money, ML prospects, and big club players. The sox this year have 1 or 2 more holes, but are basically out of capital. They have a few replacement level or slightly above replacement level SP's, 3 slightly above average C's, and potentially 1 extra utility infielder, with a weakness(not necessarily a hole) at 2nd. THey should probably try to deal from their modest surpluses to get at least a potential closer if at all possible, but that leaves very little depth....
  12. If no closer is added it would not suprise me to see price or evoldi take over the role and use johnson/velaquez(sp)/wright as the 5th starter. We certainly have more depth for the rotation than we do for closer. Sort of like a derrick lowe or john smoltz.
  13. cain to Milwaukee for 5 and 16 per=80m along with yelich from marlins for 4 prospects
  14. I don't release Hanley unless he becomes a big malcontent. I try to get the most I can out of his $20m by "platooning him" at 1B and DH, behind JD and Moreland. There are enough AB's to make that worth while and not too many to let his option vest. Certainly we get more out of hanley's bat then the replacement level fill in we would use. Option 2 is he gets injured, and that is not all bad either...option 3 is a release but I hate to pay people to make other teams better...
  15. Fenway changed when they did the major renovations behind home plate and over the wall. It certainly changed the aero-dynamics of the park.
  16. It is absolutely fair to say that JBJ was in fact the 12-15 best CF in that scenario then as the other teams certainly had worse CF's last year if they did not qualify. I have always like his defense and power but hated how streaky he is....
  17. something doesn't smell right there...as there are many more than 18 MLB teams....Are the others so limited to not have people qualify with enough at bats. If so that would make them worse than the 18...
  18. Thats kind of the point though. If the two catchers are close to the same defensively, which I think they are, then choosing the catcher who has the best history against that pitcher, or is properly rested, would give your offense more for the same defense. I understand the job of the catcher is to "work" the pitcher first, but unless there is a big difference between catchers the one who can give more offense is potentially better for the team. That isn't even factoring in the "flexibility" of having both catchers and all of the pitchers comfortable with each other. I fully understand there is no correct answer here. Most times it is probably more of a significant difference between the two catchers leading one to have 60-75% of the playing time anyhow. The Sox it is more evenly split playing time and ability wise, so I can see where that leads to "preferences" from the pitching staff....
  19. Hanley is too good to just release at the moment. I would just "platoon" or relegate him to the bench in case of injury and MAKE SURE he doesn't get thoose AB's he needs. Wish Panda had that clause in his contract too...
  20. I would rather rotate catchers based on hitting matchups and rest, not for who is pitching on our side....
  21. Carson Smith might be huge along with Reed and Kimbrel. Also do not discount Price. Quietly the staff has shaken off the tough start to be close to what we thought they would be. A top 5 staff in MLB. For a team that has pitched more innings than any staff in MLB by a pretty wide margin I'll take it. The line up on the other hand has too many not quite good enoughs (hanley, moreland), just having an off year(JBJ, Betts, Bogarts), or can't stay on the field(Holt, Peddy) to overcome. Benny, Devers, and Nunez have been the only "surprise" contributors. Lets hope the hitters can get alittle hot in the playoffs, and the pitchers continue to slowly step up as they have all year.
