  1. For me it would be a failure and a major collapse. I'm not expecting the Red Sox to collapse, although I do believe Bloom and the Red Sox blew it at the trade deadline, not because they didn't acquire a SP (they tried and the only two upgrades were far too expensive) but because they didn't acquire a starting 1b and a relief upgrade. I guess if Kyle S. can handle first base, I'll feel differently about the matter.
  2. Whitlock should become the new 8th inning guy and Valdez becomes Houck's piggyback partner. Valdez has looked really good, has given the Red Sox some big innings, and he can go 2-3 innings. Thus, Houck goes 4-5 followed by Valdez who will go 2-3. Thus, maybe Houck + Valdez = one excellent starter. Postseason rotation would look like this: 1.Eovaldi 2.Sale 3.Houck followed by Valdez 4.E-Rod Closer: Barnes 8th inning set up: Whitlock (could even use Josh Taylor if lefties are scheduled to hit) DEMOTED: Ottavino. Let's face it, the Yankees started using Ottavino less frequently later in the season twice? I think so. At one point, they lost so much confidence in Ottavino that they were quite reluctant to use him in the playoffs.
  3. I would put Ottavino on the IL for some rest, it looks like he is trending in the wrong direction and this is a guy who doesn't pitch as well late in the season (in recent years). Of course, I'm not sure who the Red Sox would replace Ottavino with, since the Red Sox didn't trade for any quality relief arms at the deadline. Edit--here it is: Ottavino's last 4 appearances, 3 IP, 3.00 WHIP, and a 21.00 ERA. And before anyone brings up the "brilliant" observation of, "small sample size," it is worth noting that small sample sizes are pretty much what you rely on when it comes to relief pitchers. Ottavino is getting older, perhaps his annual decline has started earlier than usual? Let's say Ottavino continues to fall apart, who do you replace him with? The Red Sox need Houck in the rotation. Whitlock would be the best choice, but I was thinking the Red Sox need to save Whitlock for the games started by Houck. Kind of like: Houck and Whitlock together would equal one dominant starter, but that strategy doesn't work if the Red Sox need Whitlock to become the main 8th inning set up guy.
  4. A question for Clint Eastwood: would you trade Casas and Bello for Jose Berrios? Let's say the Twins accepted that deal, you would want the Red Sox to do it? For me, that price is too high and the price the Dodgers paid in the Max Sherzier deal was even higher. I guess the Red Sox could have tried to acquire a lower level pitcher like Rich Hill. The Red Sox could have gone hard after Kyle Gibson, although it sounds like he didn't come cheap either. As I saw it, either the price was too high OR the SP wasn't good enough. There were only a couple of available starting pitchers on the trade market better than E-Rod and, again, the price was sky high for those guys. Of course, the situation at 1b was completely different. Starting 1b are easier to acquire and yet the Red Sox didn't trade for one even though it is a desperate need.
  5. Absurd. Houck has the same value of Vizcaino? Alcantara has the same value as Casas? I don't buy it. Trade Casas and Houck for two months of Rizzo. LOL.
  6. That sounds like a major stretch to me. I wasn't in the room making phone calls and so I can't provide definitive proof one way or the other. But we do know that starting pitchers have significantly more value attached to them than first baseman and so assuming that the baseball universe hasn't radically changed over the last few days it is reasonable to conclude that the Red Sox could have acquired a 1b upgrade without trading prospects like Bello and Casas. The Tigers season is over, J.Schoop is a free agent at the end of the year, a rental on the trade market, I doubt the asking price was outrageous. Look at what the Yankees gave up for Rizzo, something good, but a lower level lottery ticket and the Red Sox have a few of them around to use in a deal.
  7. I think there is good reason to criticize Bloom after the trade deadline but that criticism shouldn't revolve around starting pitching--the 2 available SP upgrades went for sky-high prices. Rather, Bloom failed to obtain a starting 1b and that seems problematic to me, perhaps even inexcusable. Kyle S. might be able to handle first base, but doesn't have experience at the position and could be used elsewhere and might totally suck at 1b. No one knows if Kyle S. can settle in at 1b or not, the Red Sox don't know, and that isn't good enough. The position is a major area of weakness, and so get it fixed. You can still acquire Kyle S.
  8. He was injured just recently. However, tests were negative (no structural damage) and it was just inflammation. My guess: the Pirates will take it slow with him and he will not see the majors this year. He should get some time in the majors next year.
  9. This is one of the pitchers the Pirates received for James Taillon: Starting pitcher Roansy Contreras, 21 years old, in AA this year: 46 IP, 11 walks, 65 strikeouts, 0.91 WHIP, 2.35 ERA. His fastball can reach 97 mph and he has an excellent changeup. Taillon is a free agent after 2022, along with Judge, Sanchez, and Gallo.
  10. To obtain either Scherzer or Berrios, it likely would have cost the Red Sox Casas and a guy like Bello (perhaps). I know Bello's AA ERA is a little high, but he is adjusting to a much more competitive league and he has impressive stuff, and his K totals are very encouraging. I wonder if the Twins would have accepted Casas and Bello over the offer they received from the Blue Jays? Maybe. I'm hearing that some scouts have not been overly impressed with A.Martin thus far. Regardless, if I'm the Red Sox, I'm not trading Casas and Bello for Berrios. No way.
  11. The odds increase if the NL switches to the DH, and many people believe that will happen. I think the odds are a little better than 50%? It depends. While he can probably get a multi-year offer, he won't be able to get 20 mil per year and he may decide that 20 mil for one year is too much to pass up, believing he can enter free agency in 2022. If JD doesn't opt out, I think the Red Sox should shave a little money off the 20 mil and trade JD while signing Kyle S. to a long term deal. Kyle S. should be the next Red Sox DH.
  12. The Red Sox need to save Whitlock for Houck's games. The Red Sox postseason rotation: 1. Eovaldi 2. Sale 3. Houck followed by Whitlock 4. E-Rod
  13. I'm a realist with the starting rotation situation. Bloom tried to upgrade with Scherzer and Berrios, but look at what the Dodgers and Blue Jays traded away. There were no other available starters worth acquiring. Maybe Kyle Gibson but his last two starts were disasters.....
  14. It was a seller's market big time. The Dodgers gave up two stud prospects. The Blue Jays traded away the 5th pick of last year's draft. I can't believe what the Mets did, they traded away former first round pick Crow-Armstrong, an excellent CF prospect, for a rental. Crazy. The Yankees traded away Alcantara for a rental, and 4 quality prospects for Gallo. As far as Alcantara goes, he will likely be a top 100 prospect soon enough. From this perspective, trading A.Ramirez for Kyle S., a big time bat, was an excellent move for the Red Sox. I just wish they acquired a starting 1b as well.
  15. I remember that Cabrera was really good for the Red Sox that year. Gagne was a disaster. Peavy was nothing great and I think he was pretty useless in the postseason, if I'm remembering correctly. Nathan Eovaldi and Pearce were genius moves by Dombrowski. In fact, I'm interested in seeing how the Gibson/Ian Kennedy trade plays out for the Phillies. I think the Phillies traded away a pretty good young arm, but based on his 2018 trades with the Red Sox, I'm a believer in Dombrowski's instincts. But you're correct: in these championship seasons, the Red Sox didn't load up on all star players.
  16. Schwarber does look like the kind of guy who was built to play LF in Fenway Park, kind of like Manny Ramirez. But if Schwarber plays LF, who plays 1b? That's what bothers me. The Dalbec s*** show has gone on for too long and there is no excuse for it. I'd feel better about things if the Red Sox acquired a J.Schoop or another player who could start at 1b, while also acquiring Schwarber. The pitching stuff bothers me less. I'm a realist--there were very few starting pitching upgrades to be found on the trade market. In fact, I count only two and the Dodgers and Blue Jays paid a big price for those pitchers. Sure, I would have liked a major bullpen upgrade, but I can live with smaller moves. The thing that seems inexcusable to me is the situation at 1b, a relatively easy position to address and yet the Red Sox didn't adequately address it. As far as Rizzo goes, the Red Sox could have topped the Yankees offer but even if they didn't want to, other options were out there including J.Schoop.
  17. Pitchers know they don't need to throw him strikes to get him out. The only question is: why is he still here? He needs to work on things in AAA. At this point, he shouldn't spend another day in the big leagues and yet the Red Sox keep playing him......
  18. Trade deadline is over and Cordero and Doofy Dalbec are still here. That's what bothers me. This team looks like it is ready to tank, here we come fourth place. It is clear to me now that Claire Bloom wasn't up for the challenge of running a big market team.
  19. Problem is, only two clear SP upgrades were traded: Schzerzer and Berrios. The rest of the trade market SPs weren't any better than the E-Rod, Pivetta crowd. To acquire Scherzer, the Dodgers gave up two awesome prospects. To acquire Berrios, the Blue Jays gave up a couple of really good prospects including a guy who was drafted 5th last season. What could the Red Sox have done? They were outbid for Scherzer and Berrios and the rest of the starters on the trade market were mediocre.
  20. An Eric Van post -- good stuff:
  21. For a relief pitcher, that's what I'm hoping for at this point.
  22. According to reports from yesterday, the Royals don't want to trade Santana, they see him as part of the team next year. The Red Sox supposedly contacted the Royals about Santana.
  23. Jimenez and Downs are two guys I would definitely trade. Unfortunately, Downs value has probably taken a hit.
  24. It sounds like the White Sox are trying to get Kimbrel. According to reports, the price for Kimbrel is pretty outrageous. Thus, I guess we can cross him off the list for the Red Sox.
