  1. Bloom didn't improve the bullpen at the deadline, and that is on him. He traded for two bullpen arms, but they didn't represent any kind of upgrade. The defense sucks and is part of the problem but the Red Sox didn't upgrade their defense either. Quite the contrary, in trading for Schwarber, the Red Sox downgraded their defense. With that said, Cora's usage of the bullpen was kind of weird in this game, but maybe Richards wasn't available? I see Richards as the 8th inning guy, with Ottavino as the closer, but why wasn't Richards used in this game? Was he tired? Richards has been really good from the bullpen lately and is giving me some hope that the Red Sox bullpen won't be complete garbage down the stretch.
  2. I'm rooting for the Rays to win at this point. I don't believe the Red Sox can catch them and I don't want the Yankees to catch them. I want the Red Sox to play the Yankees in that that one game wild card playoff, that'll be fun. I like the Red Sox's chances: Sale v. Sticky Stuff Cole. Oh baby, the Yankees are in trouble!
  3. Houck throws a 4-seamer, 2-seamer (sinker), and a slider. Isn't that three pitches? He also throws a splitter, though only 5% of the time. His 2-seamer and slider are plus pitches; his 4-seamer is an average offering, maybe below average, but how many starters have more than two plus pitches? Very few. Pedro had at least three plus pitches, maybe 4, but that was Pedro. Otto has two plus pitches and that is pretty impressive. He needs to use a third pitch, but expecting that third pitch to be a plus pitch is unrealistic--very few MLB pitchers have 3 plus pitches.
  4. I think he will remain on the 40 man next year, he can play 2B, SS, and 3b. He needs to produce more offensively, but he will get the opportunity to show improvement in AAA next year. Potts, on the other hand, is likely off the 40 man. And Rosario is probably off it too, though maybe they like Rosario, I don't know. He has speed and is an excellent defensive OF. Maybe they find the room for Rosario and hope to see some improvement in his bat.
  5. Or maybe Eduard Bazardo soon replaces Perez?
  6. It sounds like Otto has two plus pitches: a 4-seamer and an outstanding curveball. He doesn't have a great third pitch, but with two plus pitches in his arsenal, his third pitch can have negative value.
  7. I would release M.Perez and promote K.Ort. Ort is walking too many hitters in AAA, but he is also getting a lot of strikeouts. Meanwhile, Perez is useless, and maybe Ort can get on a roll and contribute to the bullpen.
  8. The Yankees finish the regular season with 3 games against the Rays. The Yankees could still win the division, but will most likely be in the wild card game and, yes, probably against the Red Sox. The Red Sox will need a little distance from the A's so that the Red Sox can set up their rotation with a rested Sale starting the wild card game and he should be relieved by a rested G.Whitlock.
  9. Glenn Otto, who was having a tremendous minor league season, and was one of the players the Yankees traded for Gallo, made his first start in the major leagues for the Rangers. He went five innings, gave up 2 hits, 0 Runs, 0 walks, and struck out 7. This guy is going to be a quality major league starter. Also, the Yankees cliff occurs after the 2022 season, no? At that time, the following players will be free agents: Judge, Gallo, Chapman, Taillon, Chad Green, Gary Sanchez, and Britton. The Yankees can't resign all of these players, not when they are locked into some bad contracts: Stanton, Cole, DJ Lemaheiu. If the Yankees don't win a championship this year or next, they may need to start a new rebuild. The Yankees window closes after 2022, and the Yankees farm system (ranked 19th) is too weak to help the Yankees avoid the impending crash.
  10. TRAVIS SHAW! I called it, he is going to turn this season around for the Red Sox! Will this give Travis Shaw the confidence he needs to rediscover his 2018 stroke? Message to Cora: Travis Shaw is now your starting 1b! Here we come World Series!
  11. Good summary of things. And Seabold had a dominant game. And Yorke hit 2 HR. Yorke looks like a beast! If I'm not mistaken, Yorke is not playing at the age appropriate level. That is, Yorke is young for his league and yet he is putting up impressive numbers. That is a good sign.
  12. How about this for next year's starting staff: 1. Sale 2. Eovaldi 3. Kevin Gausman (free agent) 4. Pivetta 5. Houck and Whitlock (at times the Red Sox will use a 6 man rotation, in other instances, the Red Sox will use a 5 man rotation with Houck going to the bullpen at times and Whitlock going to the bullpen at times. The Red Sox will need to manage Whitlock's innings--he certainly can't throw 200 innings next year). AAA depth (very impressive): Seabold Bello Winckowski I've been looking into Gausman, he is young enough (will pitch next season at age 31) and is the real deal (he has a plus, hard-to-hit splitter). The only problem I see: he will cost a lot of money in free agency and other teams will want him. And the Giants will want to bring him back. What are people's thoughts on Gausman? If you don't like Gausman, which free agent starter should the Red Sox pursue?
  13. Don't worry, folks, one loss doesn't define a season. The Red Sox still have a dynamic weapon in Travis Shaw that they will soon unleash on the baseball universe. Once Travis Shaw begins playing, watch out, no one will stop the Red Sox. As Alex Cora said, Travis Shaw makes the Red Sox a "more complete unit." True, Travis Shaw hasn't hit since 2018, but that is an insignificant point! More importantly, Alex Cora is good friends with Shaw's father, watched Travis grow up, it is a great story. Who cares about offensive production anyway.
  14. Prediction: the only spot up for grabs now is the second wild card, which will be won by either the A's or Red Sox. I suppose the Yankees could still win the division, and the Rays finish with Wild Card #1, but I think the Rays will hold on and the Yankees will be Wild Card #1 and they will play either the A's or Red Sox in the Bronx.
  15. The Red Sox had to send JD with Bobby Dalbec coming up. If the Red Sox had a real major league player at first base, you play for the 2 out hit.
  16. It is amazing the stuff he makes up to make himself feel better about the Yankees chances. Sale v. Cole in the wild card game. That would be wild! The Red Sox just need to beat up on lousy teams and maybe the A's go into a slump. After what happened in 2004 and 2018, when the Red Sox kicked the Yankees ass all over the place in big games, you know that Jackson wants no part of the REd Sox in the wild card game. He would rather see the Yankees play the A's. Jackson is scared--real scared.
  17. Schwarber does have a bit of a durability issue which is another reason why I think the Red Sox need to kick JD Martinez's aging butt out of here next year and use Schwarber primarily as a DH. Hopefully, JD will opt out, but if he doesn't the Red Sox will need to trade him. He will still have some value especially if the Red Sox kick in some money for the final year of his contract. If the Red Sox extend JD and let Schwarber leave, they are moving in the wrong direction as an organization and are in a lot of trouble. If they can't figure out that Schwarber profiles as a better hitter than Martinez over the next several seasons then they have major player evaluation problems that will cripple the organization for years to come. But I think the Red Sox traded for Schwarber with the intention of holding on to him as their primary DH. Moving Schwarber to full time DH next year will also benefit the defense--Schwarber will likely suck at 1b. Of course, JD does suck in the OF, which is why it would be better to part ways with him.
  18. I'm now officially rooting for the Rays to win. I don't want the Yankees to win the division. So, go Rays! It would also be amusing to see the Yankees and Red Sox meet up in the one game wild card, it'll have that 1978 feel to it. While 1978 didn't work out, anything can happen in a one game wild card, it would probably be Sale v. Cole and I like the Red Sox's chances against Mr. Sticky Stuff. Of course, the A's will have something to say about this as well. Let's say the Rays hold on, the Red Sox continue their collapse, and the A's and Yankees win the Wild Card. The A's can never seem to beat the Yankees or Red Sox in the playoffs in the 21st Century, I would need to double check that but I'm pretty sure they always lose to the Yankees and Red Sox. The Twins thing is remarkable. I don't remember how many games now, but they have lost like 15 playoff games in a row, most to the Yankees but a few other teams are involved as well. In fact, the Twins haven't won a playoff game since sometime in the early 2000s when J.Santana took the mound.
  19. And JD Martinez didn't get to a ball in the second inning that should have been an out, and that led to runs. The Red Sox fu_ked up at the trade deadline and the Red Sox are proving that everyday with a defensive reject like Martinez starting in the outfield, a total reject like Dalbec starting at 1b, and the total collapse of the Red Sox over the last 3 weeks. This is all pretty strong evidence that the Red Sox did something wrong. Oh god, and then there is the Travis Shaw signing, the player who makes the Red sox a "more complete team" in the immortal words of Alex Cora. LOL. When we look at the bigger picture, I think Bloom has done a pretty good job in setting up the Red Sox for the future. One mistake-laden effort at a trade deadline doesn't doom Bloom for the rest of eternity. Theo made mistakes too. But Bloom can't continue to pull this kind of crap or he will need to be replaced. Red Sox fans do expect greater competency from the front office.
  20. General managers can improve and evolve. Just because Bloom and company made mistakes at the 2021 trade deadline doesn't mean they will continue to make mistakes in subsequent years. Perhaps they will engage in an internal review in the offseason and figure out what went wrong. This happens in pretty much every profession--people learn from experience. Just think of all of the mistakes Theo Epstein made, one of the best GMs in history. Brian Cashman made many poor and suspect decisions at trade deadlines and yet in 2021 he saved the Yankees season with his brilliant trade deadline maneuvers.
  21. There is some speculation that the Red Sox front office believed the team couldn't win this year and thus didn't make sufficient effort to improve the roster at the trade deadline. I don't know if that is correct, however. Perhaps the opposite is true: the Red Sox front office overestimated this team and believed they didn't need to do very much at the trade deadline in order to win the division. If the second scenario is true, the Red Sox front office screwed up, and this is probably what happened, the scenario that makes the most sense. Based on O'Halloran's comments, the Red Sox front office seem to have a high opinion of this team.
  22. One major issue with Duran right now is plate discipline. He can't lay off the high fastball, he can't seem to recognize it. He will be a bust if he doesn't begin recognizing that pitch and laying off it.
  23. One major sign of decline is strikezone judgment and Martinez is demonstrating the worst strikezone judgment of his career. In contrast, Schwarber only swings at pitches out of the zone 24% of the time. This is why Schwarber must be resigned. I don't know what the Red Sox do with Martinez if he doesn't opt out. They could keep Martinez for DH and play Schwarber at 1b, but a better idea might be to move Schwarber to full time DH, find a starting 1b (one year contract), and trade Martinez. The Red Sox could always include 5 million or so to help pay off the final year of Martinez's contract. If the Red Sox priority next year is to cut back on expanding the zone on offense, how could the Red Sox justify not resigning Schwarber? And Cora has been preaching a better offensive approach all year, and so I would assume this will continue to be a priority in the offseason.
  24. I agree with this. I'm not saying the Red Sox should have acquired Max Scherzer, they clearly didn't have the pieces for that. But the failure to upgrade the 1b position with a player better than Dalbec/Cordero (and now Dalbec/Shaw) and the pitching staff was inexcusable. Brian O'Halloran is taking some of the responsibility, which is good to hear. The good news: the mistakes the front office made at the trade deadline can perhaps lead to some kind of internal organizational critique and improvements for the future.
  25. At the end of the day you are judged by your record, your wins and losses. The Red Sox collapsed and so the organization will be judged and evaluated accordingly. Why shouldn't people do that, though? If you have a team that plays .300 baseball for ten years straight under one general manager, why shouldn't we draw the conclusion that that general manager sucks at his job? What is interesting is that some people identified the Red Sox as trade deadline losers before the collapse actually happened. That is to say, some commentators identified the Red Sox as trade deadline losers right after the deadline passed. That was somewhat prescient, no?
