  1. No it is the standard sized ball where starting with a 1 and 1 count and striking out on a foul ball ate meant to speed up the game. You don't get a lot of balls thrown by you in slow pitch.
  2. So the list of young keepers may shrink after this season is over. Sad to see the product being put on the field.
  3. I wanted to see some youngsters up but that isn't happening. The results wouldn't necessarily been different but we might have gotten a look at a couple of next seasons players.
  4. Maybe Beni is auditioning for a trade. Batting .137 in his last 15 games.
  5. Cora's gone batty?
  6. In softball you're out.
  7. I was born before we were in the 2nd world war and know there is at least one guy here much older, bless his soul. By the way, Beni is down to 268 and in a free fall. Hard to know what is going on there.
  8. Maybe it makes more sense to play Dalbec at 1st, Chavis at 2nd and bring Chatham in for one of the utility players. Chatham can handle any infield position, can probably handle an outfield postion (good arm and adequate speed) and may add some power if he can add 10 to 15 pounds. The thing is we may have another budding first baseman coming along in 2021. How we look at Dalbec and Ockimey may be impacted by that. Our outfield is where we may need moore help. JBJ may go due to his cost vs value, Mookie is a keeper, but can we compete for him at what he may be offered by others. Beni is also worrisome. He is a sliightly above average defensive player. His main value is as a high on base % guy. He is in a major funk now and may be subject to some kind of depression which impacts his performance. Either he needs different coaching or he is developing into a player who will not be as good as expected. Hope not but his trajectory is downward.
  9. If you have interest in the subject in depth, I refer you to the technical papers listed in the following: https://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/bats.html
  10. I own one I bought at Hospice for $5 but I also own 4 carbon fiber bats that all ran over $175 and the last one was $200 with a discount. They do break and I have broken 4 Miken's and one Dudley Hot W and I am old enough that I shouldn't be able to do that. The aluminum bats are used in cold weather since they don't break easily.
  11. Sad that the offense can't hit this guy. Sure, Mookie is out and now JDM but how about others stepping forward. JBJ is the only one until Travis came through. Something seems wrong with the spirit of this team.
  12. Double walled carbon fiber bats run around $200 and can go more. They are used in softball, and senior softball gets the ones with the highest Bat Performance Factor. High speed phots at impact show the ball deforming a lot. Bats develop handle bend when swung and also deform when hit. Lots of reseach has been done on this subject.
  13. Now you're talking my sport, softball!
  14. That is why many of us support a reset in 2020. The advocacy is for keeping our young core, being as competitive as possible while resetting, starting the rebuild of the farm and getting out from as many underperforming contracts as possible. It has now been discussed ad nauseum and the next moves will be up to the front office. Not much to discuss until a new GM is put into place. The FO will probably not state their business plan and we will have to guess at it by the moves they make and don't make. Any speculation now is just our guesses about what is about to unfold.
  15. If they do use robo umps to call balls and strikes, they will be used to inform umps not displace them.
  16. So will it mean 13 pitchers and 13 field players for the Sox?
  17. Dalbec may turn out to be a decent 1st baseman with power and Chavis may be able to handle 2nd and show improvement at the plate. Travis doesn't excite me either in the field or at the plate. Okay, but easily replaceable. Chatham may also be suitable as a utility infielder. I see a competition with Holt and Lin for that role. Holts a FA and may command more than we have to spend. The outfield should still have Betts (I hope) and Beni. Who do we have to play at the third outfield spot. It shouldn't be JDM and he may be gone either in 2020 or 2021 anyway. We moved up Duran to 4th on our prospect list. He must show some talent to have made such a big jump so quickly. I'm for taking a hard look at him. Gorky and Owings are no doubt gone.
  18. Both he and Beni went into slumps. I am not going to suggest corrections for Devers because when he was hot, he hit balls in and out of the strike zone. Seemed like a natural hitter who started to think too much.
  19. Having read the bios on the candidates who might be available to replace DD as GM, I find Matt Arnold, an assistant GM of the Brewers to have the best match of skills to what we will need going forward. Is he available or interested. Time will tell.
  20. I hear you, but the fact is that hitters have to pick up the ball from the pitchers release point. These guys often throw at better than 95 mph and can have 3 or 4 pitches to bring up there. In addition, the batters often face the same pitcher twice or less in a game. They need time to settle themselves in their routine to have much chance of getting the bat on the ball.
  21. Will Cora change any of his coaches? Will the new GM powwow with Cora and the front office to decide on a different plan. It turns out the plan didn't work as our pitchers weren't ready in the beginning and were too fragile to make it even into September let along October. Most teams experience pitching problems during the year, but ours seemed to be more pronounced.
  22. When you look at the win today, we had 6 total hits, 2 by Beni and two big ones by Vaz, It shows how much we really need another hot bat like Mookie's in the lineup. In fact, it would be helpful to have Devers and Beni back hitting consistently so we could go at least 6 deep in the order with threats. Mookie, Devers, Bogaerts, JDN, Beni and Vaz. Or course it would be great to have depth throughout like the Yankees. We might do that with Holt, Chavis and if one of our youngsters shows something next season. Who will be effective as starters next season? Sale, Price, E-Rod, Eovaldi, Houck, Mata, Chacin, others? It will be fun to watch it develop.
  23. It looks like it will possible to keep Mookie with his and other arb raises in 2020 while still resetting and maintaining reasonable competitiveness. JBJ will have to go and possibly either JDM or Evovaldi (more difficult) would help. Yes we have to wait for the Pedroia contract to play out and we have to hope that the Sale, Price and possibly Eovaldi contracts produce more positive results than this season. We should keep an open mind on which of the Holts, MHernandez, Lin, Travis, Chavis, Chatham, Dalbec Duran and Okimey we keep. It won't be all. We haven't seen a lot from Travis or Marco this season so it should open our vista to look closely at others. We also have two other pitchers in Houck and Mata who might make the grade. By resetting in 2020, we can exceed the competitive balance Tax first threshhold in 2021 without severe penalties and we may need to do that to keep our young stars. I still don't recommend blank checks either in total salary or length of contract. We should pay in terms of worth and in consideration of risk.
  24. Travis isn't doing much with his opportunity
