  1. Are you sure about that? If you look at Beckett's career #s there's a definitive pattern that cannot be ignored. Dating back to 2005, Josh's season following a season in which he's had an ERA in the mid 3.00s or better, he's tanked badly the following year--posting an ERA above 4.00, even into the 5.00 range. Last year he finished with a 2.86. There's nothing (other than wishful thinking, of course) in his history that indicates he will break from this disturbing pattern. Add to this the fact that he's going to be wearing a bulls-eye on his back the entire season for being an arrogant punk and I'd say we've got more of a recipe for disaster than we do a climate for him putting up similar numbers to last year when he was going well.
  2. I think you and I heard him say this stuff the same day---when he was filling in on D&C during the holiday break. And no, i haven't heard too much about it at all since BV's Texas trip.
  3. There's been other hints that the organization hasn't forgotten either. Tom Caron from NESN is perhaps the biggest Sox shill going, but even he has said Beckett will be walking into a hornet's nest in ST due to the "deplorable way he's handled the off-season." What that tells me is that the organization, from top to bottom, is bracing for a dicey situation when Fatboy shows up on 2/19. And like you say, it's a 100% lock that the entire opening day Fenway crowd is poised to unload on him when he's introduced with the rest of the club. To pitch him that day would be like throwing him to the lions. Honestly, Im still not convinced Josh even makes through ST with the club. I can easily see him being stubborn enough to dig in his heels and give everyone the finger. In which case, they really might be forced to move him.
  4. I agree. If people are expecting Melancon and Bailey to step in and pitch as effectively as Bard and Papelbon they're setting themselves up for a huge letdown. There will be some growing pains with these two---quite possibly almost a whole year's worth.
  5. IMO, they would in a heartbeat. There's nothing left for them to do here. The sooner they go the better.
  6. Anyone picking this team to finish above 3rd place in the AL East is dreaming. Sorry, but it just ain't happening. And like I've said before, and I know you agree with, Pumpsie---3rd place in the division isn't exactly a lock either. I can see the Jays giving us a good run for that spot. They're marginally better team right now.
  7. That's a good approach, Papi. With the number of times this three-headed jackass that calls itself an 'ownership group' has contradicted itself and been caught lying you'd have to be a complete imbecile to believe anything they tell you.
  8. You can make the argument very easily that they're considering selling. First off, Henry's always been a guy looking for the next financial venture. By his very nature you would think that ten years is a long enough stay for him. But perhaps the biggest key we should watch is how hard Larry lobbies for Selig's job when Bud retires next Dec. Some have Larry as the front runner for the Commish's job and if that's true, and Larry gets it and takes it, then where's that leave Henry and Werner? Without Larry it's really kinda hard to imagine that Henry and Werner will want to go through the process of starting back at square one with a new CEO and a new corporate regime. So that's what I'll be watching. If Larry gets Bud's job, it's a slam dunk Henry/Werner sell, IMO.
  9. Amen to that. Wakefield needs to be tossed with last season's stale peanuts. Can we please put a stop to this guy and his nonsense once and for all. He sucks.
  10. Amen to that. It has to make you wonder whether or not this is his way of saying he wants out.
  11. Indeed. It's his choice. He can stop it anytime he likes. And who knows, maybe the way he's handling this is just an indicator that year really got to him and he's decided that he wants out, and that this is just the beginning of him trying to shoot his way out of town. It certainly wouldn't be the first time we've seen a player do this. Truth is we just don't know yet. But he sure ain't doing himself any favors in the court of public opinion by behaving this way. That's for damn sure.
  12. That's fair. But my guess is that it's results and not methodology that ownership was concerned about when deciding to bring Valentine aboard. It's hard to imagine Luchhino suggesting limits on how far or how hard he wants Valentine to push some of these layabouts---or Valentine agreeing to any such terms to begin with. That would have added up to not much more than Francona is said to have suggested before he was jettisoned. No, I think (or at least I hope) Valentine's been given free reign to operate however he sees fit when it comes to these prima donnas. And if takes making them human pinatas through the press, well...that's their choice. I suspect most will come around, adjust, and produce---while at least one, maybe two--I have a sneaky suspicion--won't, and they'll get their backs up and shoot their way out of town. And that's fine, too. This is, after all, a transitional year---so weeding out the dickheads will just be another part of the transitional process.
  13. I agree. Valentine's doing things the right way, IMO. And he's handling things the exact way ownership was hoping he would. There's too many prima donnas on this roster who have gotten so used to having a manager cover up their insipid, self-centered behavior that they truly believe that's way things are supposed to go. Well it's too bad, those days are over. The wall of secrecy between players and the public has been obliterated by the addition of Valentine and the sooner they wake up, realize it, and change accordingly the better off they'll be. Anyone (including these malcontents) who thinks they're gonna win a mental battle of wits against a guy like Valentine needs their head examined.
