If the Phillies sign Hamels, which it is looking like they will, I say the Sox go for Cliff Lee. I know his numbers are down in terms of ERA, but hear me out here.
- The Phillies will likely eat about $5-7mm of his salary per season, meaning they would be leaving about $18-20mm per year for the Sox to pick up. This would allow the Phillies to go out and resign guys like Hunter Pence.
- The Sox need an ace, and at $18-20mm, that's a better deal than you would get on the open market.
- Lee has an FIP of 3.04. His K/9 (8.57) and BB/9 (1.78) are both better than his career numbers. This is almost the opposite of a Ryan Dempster deal. Dempster will regress back to his career numbers once traded. Lee will likely do the same, but in the opposite direction.
- Lee gives us that bona fide ace that we need. It allows Lester, Beckett, Buchholz, and Doubront to slot down. I mean honestly. Buchholz as your #4? That's ridiculous.
I am going on record and saying I think the Sox should trade for Cliff Lee.
