  1. Chooo Chooo....gotta get on the Choo train. Els leaving breaks my heart....I was hoping against hope that he'd pull a Pedey and stay. To me, Els isn't the greatest defender....and he has a limp arm....and he isn't an OBP machine (some sour grapes to ease the loss). Choo is the deal....rifle arm, as good a defender as Els, and he gets on base at a phenomenal rate and can steal 20 a year....exactly what this team needs. Vic in center, Choo in right, Nava/Gomes platoon in left. Els, to me, was a base stealer and he absolutely f***ed with pitchers' minds and defensive positioning. Vic had a great year 'cause when Els got on, there'd always be a hole somewhere for Vic to slap one through....which he did all year long. That's where we'll miss Els most. Choo could help mitigate that loss.
  2. The next 30 games will decide what kind of moves the team makes....and the next 30 games are wicked rough - Yanks, Rangers, Tigers, Rays, Orioles, Rockies...the only weak spots are Phils, Angels and Jays, and they can all be tough. If they get to game #80 and they're still 10 games up but Doubrant and Dempster haven't turned things around, then, of course, Lee looks more appealing. It'll be interesting if things go south - Gomes, Drew, Vic, Dempster, Doubrant, even Naps, Salty, Els, and others could all be tempting to competing teams with specific needs....and might land the Sox some gems. The next month will tell the tale....should be very interesting indeed.
  3. Over/under on number of games at 3B before the DL....I'd go under on 45 all in! At this point Youk's main talent is taking a walk, but even his OBP has been on the wane. Glad to see him in pinstripes, just another notch on the way down for our biggest rival. Plus, Sox pitchers know to bust him inside and not to paint corners....throw him strikes then throw him out.

  5. Tough call on Salty - we tried so hard for so long to land him. I'm still waiting for those streaks to be less, well, streaky and his handling of pitchers to be more effective. But, package up Salty, Melancon and a prospect or two and we might land an half decent pitcher. That said, I HATE the Victorino deal - I thought they signed Gomes to be the 4th OF.
  6. Didn't like the Napoli deal - subpar catcher, worse 1B and a rapidly slowing bat - he looked horrible down the stretch in Texas last year and was completely over-matched by decent pitching; absolutely HATE the Victorino deal - speed goes first and the guy's a 32, career 275 hitter with massive weakness vs. lefties, good glove but 13 mill a year for a glove and a below avg hitter? Sounds like a nice fourth OF. It seems that this may be the end for Els - why else sign a guy whose only strength is his CF abilities. Probably Els, Kalish and Salty for Hamilton or a prime starter. I really hope they can pull in Choo and Masterson for an Els package. I really think we struck out by overlooking Choo - of course, Boras but the guy's a solid young stud.
  7. The Greek has gone....funny how time slips away. I wish Youk could've been more a team guy - I'd much rather have Youk pinch hit and start once or twice a week at 3B/1B/DH. Don't like the fact that we're left with Punto as our only reserve infielder. I thought they were holding Youk back to package him one/some of the upcoming roster casualties....Youk, Posednick and a superfluous reliever for a prospect or two. Don't like what we got for him 'cause we already got what we got for him.
  8. They have a row a starters with patchy recent track records - hurt, shelled, aging. Still, I'd like to think mgm't sees something we're not, like waiting on negotiations with Oswalt and Tx and StL to come to a halt and getting him for their original offer. If not, Mortenson and Tazawa are the two I'd bet on coming thru training and making the roster as starters.
  9. We've just dug a hole right....and it's smack dab in the middle of the infield. WTF? Where are we going with this? If it's a salary slice, then the whole off season makes NO sense. Who's on short?
  10. Why change horses in mid stream? Why convert a born late innings guy? Why convert Aceves....he was shaky as a starter and excellent in middle/long relief. Stick with their strengths. Plus, why are they stockpiling all these career-long starters if they really plan to convert Bard and Aceves. I hope it's just lip service to bolster morale. Bard as a set up guy and Aceves in long relief....grab Oswalt (not crazy about that move but a solid #4 and we can mix and match the outcasts we've been brining in...maybe there's a solid #5 there). NOW GET A SS!
  11. Bard is key to the late inning bullpen and Aceves is key in the swingman role....why meddle with a good thing? Malacon-Bard-Bailey to shut things down is a strength....Aceves-Fat Albers-One of many in middle relief is a strenght....the starting three plus Oswalt and a starter from the ranks is a strength. There's no need to convert Bard; there's no need to convert Aceves....they are perfect where they are. NOW GET A DAMN SHORTSTOP and a RH bench player with pop.
  12. Don't like the move simply because THERE'S NO SS! Your defensive strengths are up the middle with the SS the keystone to the entire infield....now Scutaro was no Ozzie but he handled the position at an average keel and hit fairly well. If you're shredding salary, then why sign Nick Punto? Why keep Darnell? Why a third catcher? Why the handful of Cooks, Padillas and such? PUNTO SUCKS. I like Aviles in Jed's old role but who's at short? Unless they're planning to shock us all by signing Hanley (a LONG shot, if any at all), then I don't get it.
  13. No questioning the guy's heart or his team mentality, I just don't like his baseball skills. Even as a late innings D guy, I don't think he adds much....just a rah-rah fuzzy feeling. Aviles proved himself as a nice infield utility guy and Inglesias has all the leather and the same bat as Punto....so why pay the guy 3.5 million over 2 years? That's money that could've been much better spent elsewhere. I see him cut long before the contract ends....I hope I'm wrong and he brings a c'ship attitude and sharpens up our millionare airheads. I just doubt it, that's all.
  14. All during the playoffs and Series last year, I kept wondering how the Cards kept playing Punto over Theriot....the guy was weak at the plate and had little range in the field. I thought Theriot must've been hurt and they were stuck with this guy. I was pulling for the Cards and it was horrible to see that guy step up to the plate (though he did come up with a few worm killers thru the right side). I hate the move....people are playing up his glove skills but I don't see any range. And he's mid-30s with a glass bat. There were dozens of better options for the utility infield role. I'd like to give the new m'gment the benefit of the doubt but, man, IMO lousy move.
  15. If the picked up Melancon as a seventh or eighth inning guy, then pretty good move. If they have any plans of using him in a closer role, then WTF? Living in San Antonio, the 'Stros were our local team and we saw a lot of him last year. He's got this wicked curve ball that he relies on a bit too much....and he's got that Paplebon way of turning a simple save into high drama. But, like I said, keep him as a set up guy and the move makes sense. That said, Punto replacing Lowrie SUCKS!
