Greinke had a winning record last season despite playing for a horrible team. Buchholtz performance today could go a long way in the Cy young voting. He only went six innings. However he had to warm up twice due to the hour rain delay and still yielded zero runs. This should be an interesting year for the Cy Young voting. There is no clear cut winner right now.
Absolutely right Rizzo won't be here for at least two years. Probably three. So we will need to sign somebody or trade for them. Not exactly alot of options to choose from on the free agent market this season. Resigning Beltre and Youk staying at first is the best option. Problem is he is having an excellent season which makes dealing with Boras alot more difficult. If you move Youk to third here is your list for first base
Garret Atkins (31)
Lance Berkman (35) - 15 million club option 2mm buyout
Wilson Betemit (29)
Hank Blalock (30)
Russell Branyon (35) - 5mm mutual option

Adam Dunn (31)
Troy Glaus (34)
Wes Helms (35)
Eric Hinske (33)
Aubrey Huff (34)
Mike Jacobs (30)
Nick Johnson (32) - 5.5mm mutual option with 250k buyout
Paul Konerko (35)
Adam Laroche (31) - 7.5mm mutual option with 1.5mm buyout
Derek Lee (35)
Doug Mientkiewicz (37)
Kevin Millar (39)
Lyle Overbay (34)
Carlos Pena (33)
Albert Pujols (31) - 16mm club option with 5mm buyout
Fernando Tatis (36)
Chad Tracy (31)
Ty Wigginton (33)
Take your pick.
Don't like the Idea of moving Youk to third. He is much better at first. If we where to do that I would much rather sign Pena, or Konerko if we look for a righty. Would stay far away from Lee. don't mind Overbay. Would prefer Pena's power. Rizzo is the guy I would like to see a few years from now.
Three series. Two against the Rays, and one against the Yankees will tell the story. If we win those series we have a very good chance. If we don't we are done. It's that simple.
Just going to throw a line-up out there with the thought process being you can go a little younger, and still have some quality players. Don't need to spend a ton to put a quality lineup out there.

Buchholtz is the Ace of this staff right now. He absolutely has a shot. If it where not for his stint on the D.L. he and Price would probably be neck and neck. His innings pitched would be alott closer as well. As far as the playoff thing that can go out the window. Neither Greinke nor Lee made the playoffs. Add Halladay to the non playoff list of Cy young winners as well.
Very satisfied with this years draft. Especially Ranaudo, Workman, Brentz, Coyle, and Cecchini. Ranaudo and Workman could be the eventual replacements for Lackey and Beckett in a couple of years.
I agree with the above post that states we need a defensive catcher. I would like to see Saltalamachia get a shot at the starting catcher slot. Bring back Varitek for a year as a backup and mentor.
After just a year and a half. Way over the Victor Martinez hype. He has a better than average bat for a catcher. His defense at both catcher and first base absolutely sucks. Let him walk. He is not worth the money.
Would love to bring Beltre back. Beltre at third and Youkilus at first is a much better defensive tandem than Youk at third and Martinez at first. There will be alott of competition to sign him this offseason, and we may just sign a Scutaro type player for a couple years till Middlebrooks or Vitek is ready.
The outfield. While I absolutely think Carl Crawford is a great player. We have plenty of outfielders. Kalish in my opinion is the answer in left field. Reddick or Nava could very well take over for Drew after this season. Ellsbury is not going anywhere. He is the centerfielder next season.
Starting pitching is set. Buchholtz and Lester are the top two now. Lackey needs a bounce back season. Dice -K is well Dice-K. The contract extension with Beckett this season was probably a mistake. But despite his problems. He is still better than alott of pitchers in this league.
The Bullpen needs a complete overhaul minus Bard. Doubrant Looks like he could be a solid lefty reliever. Okajima is done. Send Delcarmen packing. Atchinson while he tries hard doesn't have it. If you can trade Bowden. Do it. Papelbon will probably be back as the closer. I would be trying to move him in a trade. It's his last season under team control and we should get something for him. He is not the same pitcher anymore.
That's my take. Theo has alott of work to do. Unfortunately I didn't bring Papi back here as well. Although I'll change my earlier stance and say I'd bring back Ortiz before Martinez.
One thing I like about Doubrant is he throw alott of strikes earli in the count. Which is big for a reliever. He seams to have made an easy transition to the bullpen.
Drew, Cameron, Martinez , and now also Lackey has been quite disappointing. Dice-K is another big one. I don't dislike Okajima or Wakefield, But I think there time is done.
Think he could do pretty well. Another guy ahead of the age curve. May be able to fight Iglesias for short. Probably a utility guy though. Possibly third base if he fills out alott more.
Hopefully that's correct and we do already have most of these kids signed. Especially Renaudo, and Workman. The Red Sox new by selecting them the type of contract they'd be looking for. I can't see them not signing.
Exactly will617. Our deepest positions are outfield, First Base, and Catcher in the Minors. Not to shabby pitching wise although not immediate. The biggest problem is that outside of Nava who is a switch. Everyone seems to be a lefty. We need to move some lefty bats for some right hand bats. Really do not want to see Kalish leave. He is so far ahead of the game for his age. Could easily move Reddick or Nava. Maybe some of the other guys mentioned earlier.
Rizzo. Hands down. More power potential. Much better defensively. Shows just this season. He has already surpassed Andersons numbers in Portland. Anderson could be used as trade bait now.
We are extremely lefty heavy in the Minors. If we could move Drew that would be Ideal. He has a limited no trade clause which blocks trades to two teams. The problem there though is contact remaining, and length. I do understand the interest in Werth. If you move Ellsbury you better get a pretty good return. Need not Forget that Nava and Reddick could be key Chips as well. You could throw Lars Anderson in thjere as well. No problem moving him with Rizzo who seams to be the better power prospect coming on strong this season.
Yeah. Both Drew and Cameron's contract run out after the 2011 season. So lets get rid of one of the two young guys and hang on to them. That makes no sense. Drew has under achieved this season, and is often injured. Cameron has also shown signs of decline. Although I'll give him a small pass due to the abdominal injury. Ellsbury and Kalish are under control long term.
Really don't get the Chris Davis interest. I also don't get the Red Sox obsessions with first baseman and outfielders lately. We have plenty of outfield and firstbase options coming. Last year it was Laroche and Kotchman. This year Davis and Delgado who hasn't played in A year and a half. I don't mind the Idea of Jason Werth in the off season. However we have greater concerns than another corner outfielder. Like resigning Beltre seeming we have nothing in Terms of depth at third base. The graetest concern should be the bullpen. Not first base and outfield.
Saw this move coming and absolutely hate it. I guess Ortiz is incapable of playing first. If he played first who cares who DH is. Sick and tired of signing all these dinasaurs. It's no wonder we break down toward the end of every season now.
Beltre should be first on that list. Then V-Mart. Let Ortiz walk. V-Mart makes more sense as A DH /1st base / Catcher. Ortiz is A DH only. Youk is gone for the season, and it doesn't even appear to be an option for Ortiz to play First base. Thats Ridiculous.
Kalish is a star in the making. Letting this kid get away in another absurd trade would be ridiculous. We should be just buying time until Rizzo is ready at first. Personally tired of trading guys away like Hanley Ramirez, And David Murphy. Obviously take the World series win with the Hanley trade. Just saying he would be nice to have in the line-up. Lets not let Kalish get away.
Kalish should be Starting next season. He is beyond ready. But we are so stupid he probably will start the season in Pawtucket. Hell Braniac pulled him from tonights game for Hall to bat.
