  1. What a discouraging game.
  2. I was listening to the Saturday Morning Baseball show today, and someone brought up this idea. Should the Red Sox consider resigning Papelbon and making Bard a starter? Bard is incredibly valuable as a setup man, but would you rather see him pitching 60 innings a season, or 200?
  3. Werth signed Dec 5th. Crawford had dinner with the Yankees on Dec 8th.
  4. Hey, Cashman, maybe you didn't hear about a guy named Jayson Werth. He's the real reason why Crawford cost that much.
  5. Can the mods please close this thread? Thanks, Pal.
  6. I don't know about you, but I consider this year to be a complete and utter failure for the pitching staff. I keep trying to convince myself that the rotation is very top-heavy right now, but there are just so many holes in this team's pitching. Theo desperately needs to address bullpen depth in 2012. I was highly critical of the Jenks deal at the time, and it overextended the resources that were needed to be allocated to the pen on an obese closer in decline. Bard and Albers got overused, because this team simply doesn't have anyone else to setup. Papelbon's two blown saves this years were both from when they tried to pitch him multiple innings. Aceves can't get moved to the rotation because this team desperately needs him in the bullpen. Its a complete mess, and while you can blame the rotation's failures on injuries, you simply cannot do the same for the bullpen.
  7. I don't know why anyone would want to mess with the lineup at all for the rest of the season. Ellsbury, Pedroia, AGon, Ortiz, Crawford, Scutaro, Salty, Reddick, Aviles need to play every game for the rest of the season. The bench beyond those guys are absolutely attrocious, and Youkilis should rest till the postseason. Give Varitek one more start for Beckett, but no starts beyond that.
  8. You can't fire both Theo and Tito in the same year, that would create a little too much disorder in the organization. I'd start with Tito, give Theo one more year to right the ship, and see what happens from there.
  9. Remember when everyone was hammering Claude Julien for the Bruin's play last winter?
  10. Why? Because the front office decided to fire a GM because he fielded ONLY the third best team in the majors? I think next year's offseason could be a good challenge for Theo. He is significantly better with low cost signings, and this team has very limited resources to spend. There won't be a big contract for him to screw up on, and obtaining more Aceves-type guys, and fewer Lackey-type guys would probably work better for his skills.
  11. His OBP this year is down from .350 to .300. That should account for a 15% drop in stolen bases, not a 60% drop.
  12. Yeah, like pretty much all of Boston, I'm sure. Okajima and Tazawa haven't been shining examples either. But Darvish would be a good way to get an elite pitcher for no luxury tax implications.
  13. Brilliant, brilliant post. I may sig this later.
  14. Darvish is actually an interesting suggestion. The Sox want to be just under that luxury cap range, and with the posting fee, his per year salary will probably end up lower.
  15. "Season over for CC" on the Yankees board? What a tease.
  16. What's wrong with Scutaro?
  17. Mike Lowell's .324/.378/.501/.879 in 2007 is pretty similar to A-ram's 306/.360/.506/.866 year at similar ages. Lowell was significantly better defensively, but he also took a team friendly deal, and there are so few quality 3B right now. Getting A-ram will cost probably around that-- 3/45, but that would also free up Middlebrooks for a big offseason trade.
  18. Capuano? Great idea, even if that means he won't be able to start in the playoffs. Get it done.
  19. I don't think the Red Sox have any choice but to resign Papelbon. This season he has a 94% save percentage. As good as that is, put this in perspective- his two blown saves were both in multi-inning appearances, so he has a 100% save percentage when coming into the 9th this year. There are very few sure-things when it comes to relief pitching, and they need some serious stability. I think that it is in the best interest of this team to find a new third baseman. Youkilis is great and all, but he serves this team better playing DH for a year, or as trade bait. Take Scutaro's option! He has been injured frequently, but if you look around the majors you'll notice that shortstops get injured. He's still very affordable for his production.
  20. They clinched at the expense of the Rays. It is bittersweet, but atleast the Rays are still 2.5 back.
  21. Do you really think that the self-proclaimed "City of Champions" is going to happily accept a second consecutive year without baseball playoffs? There will be riots.
