  1. In a dream world, it would be best if the Sox signed Holliday and the Cardinals signed Bay. We'd get Holliday, plus the 20th and 25th picks in the draft and the 2 supplimentals for Wagner and Bay. Otherwise, Holliday staying and Bay to the Mets is the next best option. The Mets pick is protected, but having the 20th, 2 supplimentals and the 7th pick in the 2nd round is better than having Holliday play in Yankee Stadium.
  2. I was thinking about this and considering that they pulled the trigger on the trade before signing Beltre. What about Jorge Cantu? I heard somewhere (I forget where) that the Marlins were really only looking for a middle of the rotation starter. I would assume that Junichi Tazawa right now fits that, and he only makes about a million dollars in 2010 and 2011. I wonder if a package of Tazawa plus one or two other lower prospects gets Cantu.
  3. Another option that I hadn't thought of but may be better than signing Beltre is trading for Jorge Cantu. I thought I heard that the Marlins were just asking for a middle of the rotation starter for him. I wonder if a package centered around Junichi Tazawa would work for them.
  4. You know. The more that I think about it, the more I think you may have a pretty good point here. I thought Beltre's fielding percentage was higher than it is. Youk actually has a better fielding percentage than Beltre as a 3b (I haven't looked at any more of their fielding stats) and LaRoche as we all know, is a solid defensive player. Here's my question though. If LaRoche is the starting 1b, then we end up with 5 lefties in the lineup and two would have to hit back to back, making the lineup somewhat vulnerable to lefty relievers. Are you worried about that Dojji? EDIT: LaRoche also provides a benefit in that we most likely won't have to pay him anything close to what Beltre will command.
  5. I actually agree with you about the offensive production from Adam LaRoche, and I liked him for the short period of time that he was here, plus he is solid defensively at first. However, he poses two problems: 1. He's a left handed hitter. If you sign him, you now have 5 lefties in your lineup, and Tito is forced to hit two lefties back-to-back. 2. You are weaker defensively at first and third than you would be if you signed Beltre.
  6. I didn't say they didn't. I said if they want him, it would have been better to sign him before trading Lowell. I'd be surprised if Beltre isn't the plan though.
  7. If Beltre is their plan, they better have an agreement with him because otherwise it was stupid to trade Lowell right now. If they don't, Boras is going to eat them alive and we may end up with Kotchman at 1st and Youk at 3rd to start the season.
  8. If I'm John Henry, I'm not really all that pleased with Theo's pension for paying players to play for other teams, but its only for one year, and I like what we get back in Max Ramirez, so overall, I'd be pleased with this deal (as long as he pretty much has an agreement with Beltre. If they make the trade, can't lock up Beltre and we end up with Youk at 3rd, Kotchman at 1st, and Martinez/Tek/Ramirez behind the plate, he just made the team worse and paid to do it).
  9. See, the thing is, I actually have a fairly favorable opinion of Wagner. I would have loved it if the Sox could have kept him. However, if I was the Braves I would not have given up my first round pick and paid $7 million for him, and I'm not convinced that the 11IP aren't indicative of a potential postseason problem that is likely to continue. On another note (one I'm pretty sure we agree on), if the Sox can get Max Ramirez for Lowell and sign Beltre, I think that's a job well done by Theo at the meetings.
  10. I'd choose Wagner, but that doesn't mean I think his postseason numbers are an aberration.
  11. He has given up at least one run in 7 of 13 career postseason appearances. He's given up 2 or more runs in 5 of 13. If it was 2 or 3 bad outings then I might be inclined to agree with you, but giving up a run in more than half the appearances makes it look, to me at least, like there may be more there.
  12. In 13 career post-season appearances he has a 10.32 ERA. Not a huge sample, but not miniscule either, and a very high ERA. In fact, the lowest ERA he's posted in a single year in the playoffs was 5.40 in 2001, so its not like he's been good and its been negated by a couple of really bad outings. He's been consistantly bad in the post-season.
  13. The only way the Royals are trading Meche is if it saves them money and that trade actually costs them money. EDIT: Nevermind. It saves them money in the long run. Still, I think they should probably be able to get more for Meche.
  14. Olney on ESPNews: One of the other teams involved in the Mike Lowell trade talks is the Giants. He mentioned Aaron Rowand as the return. Rowand is making $ 13.6 million/year through 2012. I think I'd actually rather have Milton Bradley who is cheaper, and is only signed through 2011. On the other hand, I don't have to deal with him.
