  1. Hanigan makes a lot of sense. The importance of catcher defense hit the FO right between the eyes in the playoffs.
  2. Dempster dump might seal the deal--if Ells leaves. I'm still leery about Kemp, who can't seem to stay healthy anymore.
  3. I see a lot of people passing judgement on JBJ vs Puig, etc. Puig is a kid who has gotten a lot of publicity playing for the Dodgers in mediatown West. He was hot for awhile, then showed some signs of immaturity. I have no idea how he is defensively. I think you have to reserve judgement on him. Bradley has the potential to be a 5 tool player. He has no maturity problems evident so far. He is very good defensively, and can play all outfield positions. He looked good as a hitter in September. Hit a couple HRs off LHPs. If Bradley played in NY or LA, I suspect he might be viewed as the second coming of Willie Mays. Perhaps overstated, but you get the idea. Both these kids need playing time. experience. to develop confidence and hone their abilities. Puig will certainly get it in LA. Will Bradley get it? Hope so.
  4. I think they should stick with the platooning and the players that worked last year. Farrell is probably in agreement.
  5. You never know. That Rangers GM didn't do that well last year. Don't know how they can afford Cano paying $20 mil long range to Fielder. Tigers have Castellanos, not Peralta, to play 3B.
  6. Koji kept coming in to those one run games down the stretch and mowing them down like a machine. Amazing performance right thru to the World Series.
  7. Hey, isn't this the best off-season in years for Red Sox fans? Yeah! Enjoy it.
  8. I guess Texas is pretty hard up for power since Hamilton left. They are taking a big gamble with Fielder, who probably eats more than his salary. I see the media diatribe against ARod has culminated with Gammons equating him to the Marathon Bombers. Time for Peter to hang 'em up.
  9. The word I get about Napoli is he wants 3 years. He might get 2 plus an option year from the Sox.
  10. Looks like a nicer deal for the Tigers to me. Kinsler really solidifies their IF if he plays 2B. Miggy shifts back to 1B. Iggy at SS, Peralta at 3B if they sign him. Plus they free money to sign Scherzer. Texas gets a big contract--$20 mil per for 7 years for a fat guy who may not last 7 years. And had an off-year last year. Playoff performance may have made a deciding impression.
  11. There's a Salty thread at Sons of Sam Horn chatgroup with an analysis of pitch framing for different catchers some of you folks might be interested in. I won't go into the parameters-a bit complicated (% of in zone pitches called balls, out of zone pitches called strikes, etc)--but the results show Salty and Lav are much worse pitch framers than Ross, McCann and Hannigan--the catchers who were listed. I've always thought Salty was a bad pitch framer--often holding his glove in the middle of the plate. Ross frames the corners more frequently. That was evident in the playoffs. The data seem to support that. I would guess the Red Sox FO is well aware of data like this.
  12. Koji down the stretch was as good as any reliever I've ever seen in 60 years.
  13. Absolutely. That's how Cherington can screw it up--he has to know the key elements to retain. But he has help in the FO now. James, for example, probably has clout with Henry. James 2014 projections provide some clues. Drew, for one, looks like he's going elsewhere. He's positive about MBrooks, X, and JBJ. http://www.boston.com/sports/touching_all_the_bases/2013/11/bill_james_handbook_red_sox.html
  14. I see that Texas is getting Fielder for Kinsler. Pretty shocking indication the Tigers think they made a mistake signing Fielder. Maybe they see a decline coming. It does lessen Nap's chances for a big payday in Texas.
  15. Regarding Carp, I think he's a part of their depth of role players which was their strength this year. It's important they retain that depth. He has to figure in their plans-- how probably depends on what happens with the free agents like Napoli.
  16. There's a lot more pressure on the other teams to do something than the Red Sox--they are at the top of the heap right now, and are in an excellent position. I posted this in another thread, but I think it's worth repeating here as well. http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/boston_red_sox/2013/11/options_abound_for_sox_cherington
  17. http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/boston_red_sox/2013/11/options_abound_for_sox_cherington This article pretty much sums up the great position the Red Sox are in right now.
  18. Not a good business decision to overpay for somebody you have other options for. They know Ells strengths and weaknesses better than anybody. They could sign Chou for RF and move Vic to CF, JBJ backing up.
  19. Ha. That's Cano's first mistake. Only Boras can get the kind of money he wants. His agents are novices.
  20. I heard Cano had dinner with the Mets reps, and his agent had to pay the bill because the restaurant wouldn't take the Mets credit card. LOL.
  21. On the Bill James' Red Sox projections listed by marklmw--thanks. He isn't right all the time, but he's a Red Sox consultant, so his voice is heard in the FO. He is projecting good years for MBrooks, Bradley and Bogaerts. That increases the chances those three will be regulars next year. It also decreases the chances of the Red Sox paying Boras money for Ells or Drew. There are no guarantees, however on any of these young players. But as I've said before, they just won a championship, and have the luxury of being able to gamble on the kids. The Cardinals do that all the time. By the way, if you want to judge who the FO values, just check who was on and off the Playoffs roster. I would exclude Bradley, who was probably next on the roster in the event of injury. Dempster is clearly the low pitcher on the totem pole. What's the projection on Workman? They have said he'll be competing for a rotation spot. Also, I'd like to see the batting average projections.
  22. Nava/Gomes are under contract. Beltran is 37 in April'14, has bad knees and is probably not a full-time player at this point--despite any effort by Boras to make him look 10 years younger. Nava/Gomes worked out very well for them this year. One of Cherington's successes.
  23. Thinking about Beltran, I can't make much sense out of any serious interest here--other than keeping him away from the Yanks. But then do the Yankees really want another expensive graybeard? The Red Sox certainly shouldn't. Can't see him playing spacious RF in Fenway if Vic replaces Ells in CF. And there are no other real defensive options in RF unless it's Bradley--who is supposed to play CF. I don't think Nava is viable defensively in RF. So why the "interest" in Beltran? LF? That would screw up what they have--Nava/Gomes. I think a lot of this is just the usual media hype, at a dead time of the year when they have to have something to talk about. Bradley makes sense as the logical successor to Ells in CF, with Vic staying in RF. Now if they want insurance for Bradley, they need a stronger defensive option in RF than Beltran, if Vic moves to CF. Somebody says Beltran at 1B? That sounds creative--insurance for Napoli, in case he goes elsewhere. But what about Salty at 1B? Mauer says his hitting will be better moving from catcher to 1B. Salty's hitting might be better there, too.
  24. Yanks will re-sign him for whatever it takes. Boras will make sure they pay thru the nose.
