  1. I'm hearing Ethier. He will come cheaper with salary relief than Kemp. He can play RF but can't hit LHP. He is a friend of Pedey's. They might even be willing to take Dempster, who is worth more to them in the NL than the Red Sox.
  2. WARs change every year depending on a lot of factors, so predictions don't have much significance.
  3. The Yankees made a nutty offer for Ells which Boras took quickly while it was on the table. And some people expected the Red Sox to exceed it? The offer was in another league from what anybody else would pay for that level of player. If anything, it just shows their desperation. Wonder what they will finally give Cano? They could price themselves into deep trouble unless ARod's entire contract gets voided. It couldn't happen to a worse organization. The Steinbrenners have been anathema to baseball and salary inflation.
  4. I'm hearing Ellsbury was an ownership sign, and some Yankees in the FO aren't happy. Not difficult to see that, since their real target should be Cano. Seems like the higher-ups just don't want to meet his price. We'll see.
  5. Ells made his Faustian Pact. He took the money and ran with it. Just a grand opportunity for JBJ. Ells was expendable. And he won't help the Yankees that much. They need pitching, not another rabbit.
  6. Jon is a former Yankee beat writer--most of those guys who work for the NY based networks are from NY and seem to be Yankee fans. This one is not a big deal. Ellsbury is one of those expendable, with JBJ in the wings, and the contract he got from NY had to be ridiculous for the Yankees to get him. Plus the Sox get a supplemental 1st round pick from team that didn't make the playoffs. The Yankees are behaving in a slightly desperate way. It figured they had to spend their way out of their hole. I'm not sure Ellsbury is the best way to spend their money. After all, Gardner is pretty close to the same player unless they can turn Ells into Babe Ruth. Better spent on Cano, but I understand he turned down the same contract from the Yankees. Ha. What will the World Champion Red Sox do next?
  7. Amazing surfing the chat groups how many posters "hate" AJ without really knowing why. Fact is he is liked by players on the teams he played for. Ortiz likes him --from the Twins. Peavy must like him--from the White Sox. Gomes had the same rep when he came here. I saw a video of AJ scoring on a sac fly in White Sox/Cubs game. He had to bowl over the Cubs catcher, Barrett, to score. Barrett got up, took a swing at AJ, and started a brawl. AJ just moved away. Barrett was thrown out of the game. Good play by AJ. You can't deny there is some hostility towards the Red Sox outside of NE. Much of it generated by the media based in NY. The Yankee rivalry a factor. AJ will fit right in in Boston. The hope is he and Ross can stay healthy. Now they have to re-sign Nap.
  8. Heyman just tweeted the AJ deal is about $8M for one year. Other tweets say it's $8.25M.
  9. Ross had a concussion with symptoms which persisted last year for a long time. Other than that, he hasn't had any durability problems. He will probably split catching duties 50/50 with AJ. Very impressive in World Series. AJ is an ornery SOB like Peavy. A competitor.
  10. The Reds probably want too much for Hanigan. Plus they have Vazquez and Swihart a couple of years away. AJ hits well in Fenway, and is a better game caller than Salty.
  11. agreed. Except I'd like to see Nap back.
  12. They appear to be going after defense as a catching priority--the playoffs had a big impression on them, as it should. They could give in and sign Salty for 2 years out of loyalty. They probably won't go 3 years unless they run out of better defensive options. Salty is a good kid, rugged, and an improving hitter. But he has defensive limitations.
  13. Yeah. It certainly takes the heat off having to win another for a few years. Totally unexpected in the organization. They figured they had to tread water and wait for the prospects to blossom. Now they have a lot more freedom to play the prospects and let them develop. Hopefully they won't fall into the free agent trap of spending to win again next year. Just try to keep the core chemistry--hopefully they've defined it. The Yankees are in the opposite position of the Red Sox. As the media team from the biggest market, with all the networks based in NY, there is tremendous pressure on them this year to make the playoffs. They are out to spend, and they are desperately trying to get out of ARod's contract--and getting a lot of media help, in case you haven't noticed. Not to mention Selig, who is going along with it. The Yankees have a lot of media power, but they are in a tough position--in a tough division with a lot of aging overpriced players. It has caught up with them.
  14. I see that NFL cable gal is proudly displaying her pregnancy--wearing a tight knit dress last night. She is pretty and does a good job reading a script with all those ex-players around her (thinking about how they'd like to screw her! LOL). Her husband is probably a TV producer. I'd rather have these gals on there than men, because they look gorgeous, all dressed up in designer clothes, etc. I wish they didn't bleach their hair blonde, though. That lady Sam Ryan has the most gorgeous long chestnut hair--maybe the best I've seen. TV sports is sloshing in cable money. There is criticism beginning to emerge on how TV sports channels are the most expensive and most subscribers are forced to pay for them in packages. ESPN, for example, takes $5 out of your cable bill per month, whether you watch it or not. I generally don't, preferring to watch the League channels. There is big bucks for all the gals they hire to talk on camera (mostly scripted), and the ex-players, too. Lucrative business. A lot easier than working your way up acting on soap operas.
  15. On Cano, the Red Sox are out of the long term contract business. The reason why they probably won't sign Ellsbury. They got bailed out by the Dodgers last time, and they won't make that mistake again. They signed a few guys short term last year, mixed in some role players and prospects for depth, straightened out their pitching and won a World's Championship. The key to short term contracts is the farm system. You got to have replacement players for the guys you lose to free agency. I don't know who straightened out their front office, but they are on the right track now. Stay thrifty.
  16. Tell it to the Yankees, who will give him $25M + per to stay in Yankee Stadium. They can't afford not to.
  17. ha. Unitas is the best I've seen in 60 years. Plenty of great ones, too, mind you. Graham, Starr, Bradshaw... I remember the draft when Montana was picked in the 3rd or 5th round? Looked like a 1st rounder to me at Notre Dame. Ditto for Marino at Pittsburgh. Right on both counts. Can't figure why HOF QBs are so undervalued in the draft. Brady, too. They draft a guy 5th to run a franchise?
  18. Cano's stats are somewhat inflated by Yankee Stadium. It's called the park factor, and something other teams have to consider in valuing Cano for their parks. He should get his best price from the Yankees. The same is true for McCann--or any LHd hitter. McCann is worth more money playing in Yankee stadium than, let's say, Fenway Park. Put another way, the Yankees paid a premium to get him. They did the same for Damon years ago.
  19. I'd rather have Saltana. LOL.
  20. I hear money projections thrown out by the media, and it appears they are partly responsible for salary inflation. The agents read this stuff and get ideas. The cart before the horse. Cano strikes me as an example. Nap wants 3 years, and the Red Sox are probably at 2. They will probably go to a 3rd option year based on some conditions. I don't know how his hip figures in all this, but some desperate team (Mariners?) is liable to offer 4 years unconditional. If Nap's agent persuades him to take the money and run, bye bye Nap.
  21. No question defense is more important up the middle. Now that Salty has been exposed defensively at catching, they are left with loyalty and hitting as the only reasons for signing him. Plus he might get better defensively? They offered him 2 years, which was a surprise to me. Their preference should be a defensive improvement, and that might be Hanigan, who also has hit some before his injuries last year. They will need to make a deal with the Reds, and probably have some competition. I hope they don't get "stuck" with Salty, because they have prospects a year or two away, not to mention Lav, who hasn't played enough to assess.
  22. McCann is the typical LHd hitter who has more value to the Yankees than anybody else because of their short RF porch. So they are willing to pay more than anybody else.
  23. I posted some framing info somewhere here based on a SOSH analysis. Hanigan, Ross and McCann came out ahead of Salty and Lav. McCann has slipped a bit recently. Good chance they're after Hanigan, who was also a decent hitter before injuries last year.
  24. With McCann signed for big bucks by the Yanks, it figures to be either Hanigan or Salty. I would hope it's Hanigan. Wonder what James take is on this.
