  1. You can blame it on the laissez faire atmosphere on the Sox promoted by Francona. He figured it was the best way to get a bunch of millionaires to play for him, but they turned against him in the end. He lost control. And they became just a bunch of individuals playing for themselves. They need more structure and discipline to get back to being a team again. That's why Valentine is here.
  2. Yahoo says Stern killed the deal because the "owners complained." Owners=Knicks? Celtics? The Celtics have the best player for the Hornets--Rondo. But the Knicks and the Lakers always bamboozle the other teams with those 3-way deals where they wind up with the best player.
  3. There's more than one prima donna on this team--in case you haven't noticed.
  4. Seems as though first impressions of Ben C. are hardening after 3 days of inactivity in Dallas. What was Bobby V. doing down there? Looks like just spending Red Sox PR dollars.
  5. Money makes the world go around, the world go around.... As the song says. I asked a HOF pitcher about that once, and he said they're all a bunch of greedy bastards trying to get the last dollar....or is it their agents?
  6. It's the Red Sox. That's how they operate--and it has hurt them in recent years. They view Ortiz as a fan favorite. What nobody talks about is the phoney arbitration process, which only takes account the previous year stats. Papi had two bad years before that, when he was grossly overpaid.
  7. After listening to Cafardo's take on day 3, it's possible nothing gets done in Dallas. Ortiz has pretty much tied up most of the available dollars for pitching--you might think he would pitch in and take one for the team here. But it's clear Papi is for Papi. On the other hand, there are still many closers available out there, and the longer the wait the cheaper the price--maybe.
  8. I don't think the FO views Youks as a clubhouse problem. Forget what the media says. They are just trying to earn a living. Youks is a vital part of the team. The only real RHd power they have. Youks will be their DH next year. Middlebrook needs a year in AAA before taking over at 3B.
  9. Bad spending moves the last couple years has caught up with them this year. Ortiz is the nail in the pitching coffin--unless they get very lucky this year.
  10. Why isn't there a limit to the number of free agents you can sign in one season? The answer of course is the MF players union. The Marlin management is taking one big gamble--considering Miami is in a state of depression right now. Property values are down to nothing. What was that meeting in the Commisioners office all about with Luria et al yesterday? I wonder if Selig is concerned.
  11. Hey, there's hope. Papi hasn't accepted arb yet.
  12. Heyman says he thinks the Red Sox will get either Bailey or Madson. Stark is saying Street is still in play with another team--the Padres deal isn't done. The suspense is mounting....
  13. Benji better come out of this meeting with a closer, or there will be heat from the Globe and Herald.
  14. It boils down to this: they can't afford both CC and Papi--without compromising their pitching.
  15. Mazz' article today echoes what a few of us have said here: Ortiz' money is better spent on pitching. http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2011/12/red_sox_have_done_little_to_im.html
  16. Cherington better have something up his sleeve. It's beginning to look like the world is passing him by.
  17. Which Papi will show up next year? At his age, you don't know.
  18. Offering arbitration to Papi was a big mistake. There is no market for him.
  19. Cafardo didn't say anything about Bailey in his video report this morning. If they can get Bailey for Anderson as the main piece, that would be a great fit. Beane likes Anderson, apparently. Middlebrook they should keep. Cafardo sounded disappointed they didn't go after Santos in their meeting with the White Sox. But maybe they are focussing on Bailey.
  20. Just listened to Carfardo's day 2 report on the meetings. It did not sound encouraging. The holdup is Ortiz, apparently. What a mistake it was to offer him arbitration. Now he gets $14 mil for a year if he accepts, and still can wheel and deal with other teams until Feb. Cafardo says the Sox offered him 2/18, which he rejected. He'll never get that money anywhere else. Nick is questioning why they missed out on Santos, a controllable closer who went to Toronto. He says they had a meeting with the White Sox about Quentin, and Santos never came up. Could be the Ortiz factor, could be they don't like Santos. Could also be that gentle Ben C. may turn out to be too gentle when it comes to wheeling and dealing. Presumably that's one of the reasons Valentine is there. Why did they offer arbitration to Ortiz? There's no market for him.
