Along way to go. I'm about to watch the PawSox game on NESN. At least for a few innings.
I was looking at the box score for the Red Sox and it revealed that we left 19 men on base. Not surprising with so many hits and walks. What is disturbing was that Papi stranded 8. I don't have any faith that he is going to suddenly snap out of his funk and start to hit productively. I also don't see the Sox doing anything (benching, change in batting order, trade for a hitter, etc.) about it soon. Tito will stick with him for the foreseeable future.
I think Nick Green is the starting shortstop. Period. I realize that he makes bonehead plays in the field and he is a journeyman utility infielder. But he represents the best option at this point. Sit Lugo and use him to pinch hit and pinch run. With an occasional blow for Green Lugo can start. $9 mil is certainly too much to pay a situational player but what else can be done? Velasquez? He has not proven that he can hit consistently in the majors. Lowrey will return in July. And I think he is the best SS on the roster. But I don't know that he will be 100% healthy and in game condition. How will his timing at the plate be? How long will it take for him to regain his timing and what limitations will there be with the repaired wrist ? Hopefully he will be back to being his normal self in mid August. Doesn't sound good but it's probably realistic.
