  1. This is what I attempted to say in an earlier post. It is far to early to say given the relatively small sample size in the majors. But I see him as about average offensively already. I see no reason why he will not continue to become better. He does have some gap power now. I see many doubles in his future!!! The long balls will come, I suspect.
  2. Honestly I'll admit that I am no expert on batting mechanics. However, Vasquez does not seem to have a glaring deficiency at the plate and the kid has intelligence and strong desire to excel. He may end up being just a journeyman with great defense. I'm betting that he becomes more than that. I hope so.
  3. Yup. I have never met him but he does seem to be a really nice man. And he has that Leave It To Beaver look. Like a young boy. That helps the perception that he is someone nice.
  4. I wonder what Kelly will sign at? By the way, Nava has signed.
  5. Vasquez is not my binky but I really have to say that I see more upside to his AB than most here do. Maybe it's just that he is adjacent to Bradley in the lineup. Maybe he looks like less of a black hole? The kid is still young and developing. I see no reason to believe that he will not become at least league average offensively. He just needs a chance to get enough at bats. This is all just my opinion, of course! In any case, the catching position looks to be a strength for this team if both players pan out. We should celebrate that and try to see how it all fits together without trading one just because the other may hit a little better at the moment.
  6. It's all speculation, of course. I'm sick of waiting for Buch to realize his potential. He has yet to demonstrate the maturity and toughness to be a front end starter. I think that he is just a dolt. Still, as Kimmi and Pal have said, Buch does have the talent to put up dominant numbers. Of course his failure to do so over his career is maddening and this is why we are so reluctant to believe that he will do so. What a waste of talent. I have always like Porcello. Who knows what will happen with him. He is still young enough to graduate to one of the better SP in the AL. Hoping for either pitcher to emerge will likely result in disappointment in my opinion.
  7. Lol. You will fit in here quite well!!!
  8. This. I used to listen to sports talk radio while commuting each day. Now I hardly ever listen to those bafoons. I must say that the original Sports Huddle on WBZ Sunday nights was pretty fun.
  9. Fred Lynn was a great athlete who's time in Boston was far too short. It's cool to see him in the stands watching games. And of course, welcome to the rogue state of Red Sox Nation Ogden.
  10. A move to 1st may prevent him from sustaining career influencing injury and certainly reduce wear and tear. That would be a good way of protecting his value. And with a very good defensive catcher in Vasquez, it would be a good way of deriving value out of both players and both positions. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
  11. Bard was over promoted? He was lights out as a set up guy. Then he talked his way into a starting gig. That is where the Sox screwed up. Should have left him in the pen. And yes, I remember that he tailed off at the end of the season.
  12. My guess is that at some point Swihart gets moved to first base. He is athletic enough from what I have read. If his bat is that good it only makes sense. Maybe if the Sox don't retain Napoli after this season and Swihart is ready?
  13. As of now it looks as though the Sox "Won" that trade because they still have their acquired piece and he is very valuable being a projected mid-top of the rotation starter. But when the trade was made it was exactly what Baltimore should have done. Secure an asset that would increase the chances of post season success.
  14. I'm going to harp on the starting pitching depth. We really don't discuss it much. As I see it, this is a glaring weakness especially since at least two of the current 5 are suspect in some way related to their recent health. Last season at this time, the Sox had 6 men in the rotation before Dempster called it quits ( someone correct me if I have the seasons mixed up ). The Sox had 4-5 guys in AAA that were available to make a spot start or fill in if a starter went down because of injury. This year the Sox have 5 starters of lesser quality and health overall. And who is in Pawtucket to back up this rotation? I count 2-3 guys at best. To my mind, a team needs 7 ready to go starters in a season. I have far less confidence in the starting 5 and not much confidence that there is sufficient depth in Pawtucket to plug any holes.
  15. I agree that Masterson is a key here. We expect Buch to pretty much be himself but we don't really know what the lingering effects of Masterson's injuries will be and what he will be able to do. I seriously disagree that this team has starting pitching depth. Even if all five current starters remain healthy.
  16. Very good stuff. I particularly enjoy reading about the young guys who have such high upside at 18-20 years old.
  17. Maybe I should drive the 12 miles and watch him pitch this year!!!!!
  18. Yes it is. Mostly just flame throwing.
  19. I've gotten the impression that their evaluations are not exactly spot on but hey, who's is? I rarely go to that site but when I do I like that I can get a snapshot of the entire system all the way down to the Florida leagues. It's kind of cool to see who is on a roll in high A and such. It's a good place to start when curious about any young Sox player. The message board over there is too dry for my tastes. It lacks color and personality. Two traits that Talksox has in spades. Overall, in my opinion, the site is not totally without merit. Again, just my opinion.
  20. The author dissed Renaudo a lot. He made it sound as if Renaudo was pretty bad in MiLB and that was just not true. Lack of control and no change up maybe but he put up some good AAA numbers. I also believe the author makes some pretty large assumptions about Ross. But it was interesting to read.
  21. Yeah I have a desire to try to learn more about the importance of framing. With the snow I'm going nowhere. This would keep me busy.
  22. With Breslow back the Sox now have 3 lefties out of the pen if my old brain can still count during the musical chair off season. Maybe they don't see Layne as a viable piece???? I will miss Renaudo. I thought that he was closest to being MLB ready of all the farm arms. But he just had not developed something during 4 years of MiLB. I have not looked at his exact age but it seems to me that by this time he should have a role in MLB. I don't know much about Ross but at best I see this as a lateral exchange of pieces.
  23. It's 18 F outside. I'm in scared turtle mode. I won't be swinging mine today.
  24. I liked the game much better before the shift. But I can't see it being abandoned now.
