    Strawman. The question is whether or not the Tigers were the better team. They were near the bottom in OBP, but near the top in homers, XBH, ERAS, and quality starts. And the whole "stars injured" doesn't add up either. The Cards simply did not have a very good team, even if Carp and Mulder had been completely healthy.

    Awesome pitching staffs can take the blame for that one. The problem is, the bottom-dwelling teams in the NL are GOD-AWFUL. That so hard to grasp? Look at what CC and Lee have done this year while switching leagues, and many an AL pitcher has done before them. Smoltz could own no AL team like he owned the Pads today, if you believe differently, well, may God have mercy on your soul.
