  5. That's very ridiculous. Letting them stay the game after they provide you a service is a matter of common courtesy. Shame on you Goddell!
  6. That's good too.
  7. I'm guessing that'd be the only love he scores on a regular basis (sorry, the line was too much for me to resist)
  8. That's been a huge recent Yankee falacy -- lining up 5 major league starting pitching contracts and assuming you're done. What you just said is tantamount to declaring that you have enough pitching.
  9. 33, 34, and 35 aren't exactly 41, 42 and 43. First basemen in particular tend to age reasonably well. I think the advantage of the shorter term deal focuses on the worst case scenario -- if Teixeira gets so badly injured that his performance is affected or he can't play at all, the Yankees are completely screwed. If the Sox acquire Berkman, or just going off the Youk's contract. the Sox are still screwed but to a lesser degree.
  10. And not only were Igawa and Kawamaki good, bot Saito and Oki were much better in the States, so go figure I guess. Buyer beware and hope the scouts did their jobs.
  11. I'm a firm believer that a guy should not be punished forever for past mistakes. For some reason. Just FWIW.
  12. Dude -- you are seriously underestimating baseball owners. If it's a onetime expense that would put someone over the top I very much COULD see specifically the Sox go toe to toe with the Yankees again and any other team -- ANY other team -- whose owner was sufficiently reckless at the right time could do the same.. Possible that this is one (of many) reasons that the Sox are "preserving their financial flexibility" by not going all-out for the big FA's they want?
  13. Just remember, the posting process is such that unless you absolutely overwhelm the market a lot of other very rich teams can beat you -- and now that Daisuke, Kurida, Oki and others have entered the league with some success a lot of teams are going to be into Darvish -- hard.
  14. I could see Paps going for that.
  15. This says absolutely nothing.
  16. No one signs all their prospects. You draft some guys just because you'd be crazy to pass on them and let them fall to a rival but there's guys who just won't sign at all because they think they can get a better bonus if they wait a year. At least we did better than NYY who didn't even sign their #1 last year.
  17. It's possible, certainly our margin for error is lower than times past, but I don't see it htat way.
  18. Guillen, Ordonez, Meche are players you can get for a reduced return in talent. If they turn out to fill a position of need (say Drew gets hurt, we might go for Ordonez, or if we lose Lowell Guillen would be tempting) then it can be smart to pay the money and sacrifice little talent to add a veteran whose contribution to their present club is overshadowed by a contract we can afford to pay. Young, Bedard, VMart are players who the only way they're available at all is their contracts, and those are opportunities to be pursued as well. Hey, if Lowell gets hurt, Smoltzie's doing well, and Atlanta's out of it at the deadline, who knows, we might even see Chipper in a Boston uni
  19. Adam Dunn is the Tim Thomas of offensive baseball. When good, he;'s really good, when bad, he's really bad.
  20. Some good examples of things that could happen there: If we wind up needing a starter, we might get a decent price for some very good starting pitchers. Gil Meche of the Royals springs to mind as an excellent example, especially if the Royals want to free up his salary to pay Greinke, which would be a good move for them. Scoring Erik Bedard might be a low-priced coup as well if the Mariners finally decide to actually regroup the way they need to. And for a third option, the Padres' Chris Young might be a victim of further restriction of that market. If the price is right you might even be able to score Haren or Webb from Arizona -- less likely since those two would form a good rebuilding nucleus for a team and so might be the last pieces moved. For position players, the list starts with Michael Young, who is already rumored to be available. Carlos Guillen is a good candidate to be dealt by the Tigers as they could probably get along nearly as well without him and his huge contract. Wouldn't be too surprised if they come out of the gate slowly to see the Tigers shopping Magglio Ordonez around as well. The Mariners will likely part with Adrian Beltre, or at least you'd think so considering how bare the market for third basemen is and how far they are from contending right now. And of course, the A's will trade anyone. I wouldn't be too shocked to see the name of Lance Berkman showing up in trade rumors at the deadline either if the Astros are out of it, since Berkman's their best trade piece and the Astros are several pieces away from contention. The big opportunity I see if the market does stay bad though is the opportunity to make a deal with the Guardians for Victor Martinez. I really expect to see legitimate talks between those two clubs for VMart's services, especially if VMart lights it up and Kottaras really doesn't. One thing though -- I do not expect this to impact the Rays to any great degree. The fans rallying around a winner will make up for any further economic pinch from Tampa. This probably won't affect the pennant race this year in other words.
  21. And yet, no one has signed him more than halfway to Spring Training.
  22. This Papelbon-to-the-Yankees thing is approaching a paranoia level terror for you bsn07. Just let come what may. RIght now he hasn't and it still can be prevented since we know Theo is willing to pay his prospects to keep them around. No need to be jumping off cliffs before Theo even has the choice of whether to let him go or not. At about the point we need to make that call, Lars Anderson will be replacing either Ortiz or Lowell in the lineup and that money will be freed to pay Paps. it can be handled.
  23. Foulke had a smaller margin for error because of his average fastball velocity. His stuff, command, and execution were brilliant, but once things started going downhill he was already using all the stuff Papelbon has at his disposal to reinvent himself when he runs into the same problems.
  24. even a good team will have a few games like that. Move on and improve.
