  1. Bowden has been effective in AAA this year, and Tazawa was just promoted there. We have the ability to "go young" at any time.
  2. Pretty much even though the knuckleball isn't as hard on his arm as it is on other pitchers, playing baseball is still just about as hard for him as anyone else, and he is getting older. I wouldn't take it as a guarantee that we see Wakefield back next year.
  3. You're kidding, right? Masterson and Hagadone were by no means our best trading chips. We have no shortage of desirable trade pieces between Buchholz, Bowden, Bard, Reddick, Kalish, Exposito, Anderson, Kelly, and Tazawa, and that's just high ceiling prime youngsters in AA or above. that's 9 major trading pieces any of which could headline a banner deal and of those only 2 (Bard and Reddick) are in any way difficult to replace in this system..
  4. Since Theo is committed to Buchholz by word and deed I just hope he works it out sooner than later. I don't like the fact that he doesn't seem to be able to execute pitches to get out of trouble without bleeding runs. the sooner he gets past that the less likely he is to be out of baseball within 3 years.
  5. I'm happy to stick with Joe and Dave. Joe Castiglione is almost a member of the family even though I've nenver seen his name spelled on paper. Bringing in the Sox Talk guy as the backup though... well I just don't like his voice on play by play. The way he sounds on a home run call, well I wouldn't want to guess what else he's doing... I'd rather have Dale Arnold back as the backup like last year, even if he did keep slipping in hockey terminology and couldn't tell a slider from a curve..
  6. Dan Bard had to spend time in the head shrinker's office during his meltdown in 2007 for that matter, and look where HE is today.
  7. I want to make sure that Martinez' handling skills are better than he showed us in his first game behind the plate. Wouldn't be the first time not having Tek behind the plate has been a disaster for our pitching staff.
  8. He is the kind of player Minaya likes. In his prime, hard throwing, expensive, with many innings on his arm.
  9. c'mon, not all of the other teams' broadcasts are created equal, surely it's not as bad as Hawk for example.
  10. Pretty good (assiming you meant VMart instead of VTek) and I could go along with it, but since both King Felix and Gonzalez are low salary players I imagine we would sign a FA starter instead of trusting to the survivors of the purge. I believe Erik Bedard is a FA. I'm not sure the M's will re-sign him, but if they don't, I wonder what the chances are of him signing cheap with us to redeem his value a la Brad Penny? We do have a reputation for helping injured pitchers stay healthy.
  11. I would trade Buchholz for a bent paperclip ATM. Try to deny it all you want, he's starting to have that Hansenlike feeling to him when you watch him pitch. One minute "damn that's nasty!" another minute "Damn that was stupid!"
  12. I'm all for it. I think Bowden is ready and I think he's a better pitcher right now than Clay.
  13. Define "add." I think the Sox might need to move some players in and out of their rotation but I don't see a guy they can acquire who has the right combination of waiver friendly and effective. That means their best bet is to look to their internal options and maybe "add" a rookie from the minors.

Maybe someone could actually answer my question. Is there a writer on the scene who, upon his work being posted here, would not be laughed instantly to scorn? Amalie Benjamin, maybe?

    OK. So... Daisuke...

Kinda my point. I mean, can't you at least find a new word sometimes? Feel free to claim victory and exit stage left.

I'm not the one who has this deep emotional need to turn every conversation into a pissing contest.

Is there a writer anywhere in the national or international sports scene that you guys don't assume is a babbling fool? Seriously, the whole "Sports_Writer_X" is an IDIOT" schtick gets a little sere when universally applied.

Daisuke is still useful when healthy. I think if he can get his shoulder back to form that we will be pleasantly surprised next year. A huge part of his problems in the States stems from the fact that his fastball topped out at 92-96 in April of '07 and has steadily declined to 87-91 this year. When you lose the power on your heater, you get hit and when you get hit, you nibble. It becomes a bit of a chicken an egg question which was first, the loss of power or the nibbling. If he can ever get his fastball velocity back up to the steady 93 he was throwing first half of '07 he'll be an ace again.
  21. That means he thinks it's so stupid it's cute, probably.
  22. There's a little more to baseball than you read in the morning paper, Cobra. Just to bring you up to date: AVG is useful for some things but as a measure of overall hitting talent it's very outdated. Stick with OBP, SLG and On Base Plus Slugging (OPS). That's still not perfect but it's better than batting average. There are posters here who pay careful attention to the game and to the advanced numbers. If it's a common opinion here it's far more likely to be right than wrong in the long run. I say that as someone who goes against the common opinion a lot here. Unless we're going out of their way to be jerks, not unheard of here, it's better to assume that we know what we're talking about than it is to assume we don't.
  23. A healthy lowell does. This years edition isn't healthy.
  24. Oh lord...
