And definitely let it be Westmoreland. He's more exciting, but I won't be confident in RWML's abilities until he has a healthy season. Besides, Ellsbury's already present and producing and we have Raymond Fuentes to be our exciting CF of the future..

Minimal, I'd say. Lowell playing 1B is a potential downgrade of two different positions. I suppose it COULD happen though.

I still think Westmoreland is our LF of the future. He can help convince me otherwise by having a healthy season next year. He's been with the team for 6 months and 2 injuries already. And not minor ones either, IIRC both required surgery, and I'm not even sure that includes his labrum surgery in 2008. That's Rocco Baldelli bad, and if it doesn't straighten out he might move to the corners in ao effort to stay on the field. Under those circumstances I wouldn't mind trading the guy for the right price. If this continues, "Westy" might not see a single big league at bat.

Whoever they get they'll be paying Cabrera money at least for them in a couple years -- or letting them walk, which I don't see the Sox being willing to see happen.

Our last full-time LHT LF was Troy O'Leary. How was he at the wall?

Actually we do still have Che-Hsuan Lin, Ryan Kalish, and Oscar Tejeda in various stages of development as far as speed goes. None of them are quite in Ellsbury's league as a raw speed burner though.

Thought he was gonna retire. He's mostly played DH for them anyway. -
Well it kind of depends on which you consider more valuable, a GG 1B with 25-30 HR power, or a good 3B with 25-30 HR power. I don't necessarily want to judge definitely which is more valuable, but I do know which is rarer.

It might not be. There's quite a drought of decent SS's out there, someone could well try on Green as utility infielder if we don't, or even as a low-risk gamble as a starter (Baltimore's a real candidate there).

No more awkward than our righthanded first baseman making the cross-diamond throw or diving for a screamer down the line, I'd say. Plenty of righthanded RF's out there do the same thing.

I wonder if Seattle might go for Damon then. He could play fairly well on a short term deal as an LF/DH, especially if he can give himself some running room on a slapper into the left field gap. -
Well, it kind of depends on when you could expect Lowell back from thumb surgery. If you can start the season with him relatively healthy, you might still pull a trade off.

No, I don't. In fact I know that Youk is a better 1B than he is as a 3B. That doesn't necessarily make him a bad 3B. In fact his defense at third is about average and he gets enough reps there to keep current. Remember, he came up as a third baseman initially.

$5M isn't pocket change, but if it would improve their chances at a position, I think they would try it. It would certainly make Scutaro the league's most expensive utility man though.

If we offer him a chance to ply SS, tell him Scutaro or no Scutaro the job could be his if he plays up to it, he might weigh that against starting. Tejada has made it clear in the past that he considers himself a shortstop and doesn't really want to play anywhere else. It comes down to his priorities I guess.

I can think of a worse one. An average fan trying to judge based on "how they look at the position." I use numbers because I know I can't tell bad defense from good unless it's blindingly obvious.

Yeah, I can definitely go for that -- and Tejada would look at the competition for SS and probably see a chance to win the job outright if Scutaro regresses to the mean. He might go for it.

That said, we could use a 3B, now couldn't we? And while Tejjada can't play SS regularly without getting exposed, he could probably cover Shortstop sporadically and be fine. Just saying.

The concern with Hulett is his ability to back up SS. We've got an aging player there who's going to need occasional rest, so having a guy who can play acceptable D at short is more than usually imporant. Hulett is an offensive 2Bman at heart and that really leaves it an open question whether you play Hulett at SS, or Hulett at 2B and Pedroia at SS

Let's go ahead and say it. If you're going to suggest it, you're thinking it, so it doesn't do us any favors to try the PC dance. Yes, this team is fully capable of signing a black man. Not that there was really any doubt.

Which is the reason I'd really like to see Theo switch to trying to dig Miggy out of Detroit or Hanley out of Florida. Both of these teams have much more reason to deal those players than Hoyer has to deal Gonzo..

But not in April, apparently. Down the stretch if Green or Hulett or whoever is hurting us though, I would expect to see Lowrie -- maybe by late May early June if things go really well.
