  1. Wouldn't be too upset if they sat pat.
  2. Before you trade Pom for bullpen help, remember that he's been useful in the bullpen himself. If he can reach back and add some of the velocity he's lost while pacing himself, if restricted to short outings, I'd expect him to be a dangerous LHRP
  3. Depends on how you're defining a mistake. Sure, Cora has tried tons of things that didn't work perfectly, but if it was the right thing to try at the time, how is that a mistake? Managers stack the odds and roll the dice. If the dice come up against them, but they did everything they needed to to prevent this, hard to call that a mistake. At the very least I can't think of anything Cora's done so far this year that stacked the odds against his team, even if, again, he did try some things that didn't work (which every manager will have a few of those moments in any given year)
  4. Thing is, I can't actually identify a spot where a big trade would radically improve the team. I mean everyone wants another starting pitcher or power bullpen arm, but look down the line -- what do we actually need? The only valid answer is "the kind of two way catching stud that can't be bought for love or money." Short of the Royals hosting an epic fire sale and dealing Salvador Perez for a king's ransom, I just don't even see a fantastic possibility here for the kind of upgrade at catcher that would be worth ditching the adequate guys we have. (and yes, if the Royals make Salvy available, DD should jump on it with both feet, he's one of the few catchers out there who represents an obvious instant upgrade on both sides of the ball, but I doubt the Royals do this)
  5. You can't have it both ways. You either don't trust the bullpen to hold a lead today without Kimbrel, in which case he should have been in the game to make sure we don't blow the win, or you do trust them to have held the lead without Kimbrel yesterday, in which case this whole argument doesn't even matter because Barnes and Kelly can close out the game today. Pick one.
  6. Win in hand is worth 2 in the bush. The Orioles lineup can be pretty dangerous, I don't think we should be underestimating them.
  7. I don't believe in asking my managers to be Nostradamus. In a situation where our bats are slumping, protecting leads with the closer more aggressively is a useful tactic. It can blow up on us, but it's still a useful tactic that might help us salt away some lower scoring wins while our bats recover their mojo. If i had to guess, that was exactly Cora's thought process -- many of our hitters are struggling today, so secure the lead you know you have now, bag the win that's in hand, and don't worry about the lead you hope to have later. Especially with a deep and high quality bullpen that's probably going to hold that load too anyway.
  8. Kimbrel is a relief pitcher. He pitched in relief. You are seriously overthinking this. Kelly or Barnes can take a save situation from time to time. Taking appearanes in the 9th when the closer can't go is part of the setup role. That's why you have depth of quality relief, so if your most reliable guys are gassed, you have other arms you can fall back upon. The REd Sox are uniquely well suited to survive a situation where the closer can't go. Not many teams boast 2 other closer quality relievers, and we have them. Either Barnes or Kelly could be someone's closer in 2-3 years and would be up to the task. We have an incredible back end to our bullpen right now, and they're more than good enough to allow the manager to spread the load. This is not actually a problem. 2006 when Papelbon blew out his shoulder and the next best reliever we had was the corpse of Mike Timlin, THAT was a problem. This is an inconvenience at worst.
  9. That's a second very, very good start from Steven Wright. 7 shutout innings followed by 6 2/3 more. Looking really, really good so far.
  10. There's going to be times when the pitching has to carry the offense, and times when the offense has to carry the pitching. This is actually normal.
  11. Every team has its share of bad signings
  12. If we assume that Wright has won or will win the battle for the current open spot in the rotation, it would take an injury to see Beeks again in more than a spot starter/mopup relief role. As an aside -- I was super impressed with the job Brian Johnson did in relief. That does rate a mention, especially since we're on the subject of starting pitching depth.
  13. As recently as last year, Butler was putting up decent offensive numbers in Pawtucket
  14. The fact that a weak division leader can get in over better teams in other divisions is why the Wild Card exists in the first place.
  15. You guys are misunderstanding what I'm saying. Did I ever claim he was going to be a starter? What I said was Dan Butler would be a competent backup catcher if we had space for one. That is NOT a very high bar to meet. As a third catcher on the depth chart, to come up in emergencies and not stink up the joint, Butler could do that at least. With 3 healthy catchers on the big league roster i don't expect this to happen this year, but he's a good addition to the depth chart where he is and, as mentioned, a very solid organizational catcher.
  16. Butler has hit at lower levels, he has a chance to be a replacement level hitter in the majors. If the team didn't see a use for the guy at the major league level on an emergency basis he wouldn't be here
  17. That only even comes up if DD struggles to field a good team at those positions.
  18. And he backs that up with a fastball he can get into the mid to upper 80s too, which is something that Wakefield never had. A bit of luck here, and Wright could be a very productive SP for us for a very long time.
  19. Kind of like what I'm seeing out of Jhon Nunez too. He's a longshot, but that's my favorite kind, and he's starting to make himself interesting.
  20. I actually disagree with this. Dan Butler's appeared in Boston a couple times and looked like a competent third catcher. He's no Jason Varitek, but he's a large cut above the Corky Miller/Kevin Cash/Ken Huckaby types that you see getting forced into the lineup when starting catchers get hurt. If we had a big injury to Vazquez or Leon, I'd be pretty comfortable with Butler being the backup catcher for several weeks. He's competent on both sides of the ball, and a great organizational guy. The fact is that Swihart is unnecessary. Since we have an established tandem, and for that matter, a pretty decent replacement guy in AAA, and none of those guys are Swihart, I think he's gone by the deadline. We simply can't give him the playing time he needs, and afford all the mistakes he'd make, to develop him. Let some basement dweller team turn him into the star he'll never be here, and we'll take a relief pitcher or B-prospect in exchange. It's the corner we've painted ourselves into with the guy.
  21. Gagne. And the Rangers got 2 starting players out of that deal, David Murphy had a fine career in Texas, and Gabbard was on course for one before he hurt his elbow and lost all semblance of command.
  22. Then you know what he's talking about. A thread about Wright has been 80% arguments over Swihart.
  23. Dubon is a utility guy. Not too worried about him. He's doing well right now in his second go round in AAA, and he's young, but I honestly don't see starter potential there
  24. Guessing here, but I'd say he's probably up mostly to set the rotation up after the personnel change Kid kind of reminds me of a guy named Kason Gabbard, who came in back in 06-07 and was big for us down the stretch when Schilling got hurt. Threw a CGSO and had a few other strong outings before he got traded to Texas. Anyone still remember him?
  25. How may athletes would have sold their soul for the 50 plate appearances Swihart has done nothing with this year?
