Well, he gave us innings at least. One big swing, otherwise, not too bad.

Between Lavarnway, Youkilis, and the idea of using the spot as swing position to afford fielding players rest, we have enough options at designated hitter that I'm not anxious to get Fielder.

He's an elite offensive prospect. Or was. That's different from being an elite offensive catcher, and it's all the difference between Eric Hosmer and Albert Pujols. If you're going to try to play superior, at least make sure you're using the right argument. He doesn't have to be an elite catcher to justify his roster spot. He just has to be adequate, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia is more than adequate -- is, in fact, well above average.

Actually it does apply to your position. It apples precisely and accurately to your position. The fact is that Salty is hardly "mediocre" for a catcher. Find me one catcher not named McCann or Avila who's having a dominant offensive year this year. They just aren't out there. And you can bet that McCann and Avila are absolutely, totally unavailable. What Salty has done on the year, even with the two big slumps added in , is about the best we were going to get out of anyone at catcher this year. Salty is putting up numbers that you can live with on offense, and has been better than we hoped for defensively. As a package, considering what the position looks like overall in terms of talent, Salty is a very good catcher. Yes, even if you count April and August into the numbers.

The question you have to ask is whether the opposing teams are dreading facing Lester and Beckett, any more than we might dread facing Verlander and Wilson.

That's what I was thinking. Martin's a smart veteran catcher with a lot of Jason Kendall in him. He would have been fine mentoring Salty. Although I do think from a pure mentorship standpoint, Varitek has more to teach. I can hope that something of Tek's preparation routine finds its way into Salty's mind, because that's the thing of all things he most needs to learn from the master.

The Chicago White Sox would be an interesting place for Wandy to land. Suddenly they're back in play, and they're going to lose Buehrle at the end of the season -- wouldn't be a terrible gamble for them to try and make a play for a bit of respectability and keep the fans on board. The Angels and the Tigers could both be in on him as well.

I wanted Martin. And if Theo hadn't done due dilligence on Martin at least, I would have been upset. And it doesn't matter who signed when IMHO because we don't know when the Sox would have gotten a hypothetical deal done with Martin.

Realistically speaking there's NWIH we were going after Martin anyway. Theo was committed to Salty, and he was committed to Varitek as the backup catcher to help develop Salty. Absent Martin, the guy the Yankees go after is proably Yorvit Torrealba.

How about Salty? How would that have looked? Because the only way we go after Martin, is if we didn't trade for Salty in the prior deadline. I say that as someone who, at the time, was perhaps the most prominent supporter of going to get Martin as he would have been a good low-risk investment. We'd have had people coming in here making the same point you just made, only in reverse. Salty is, after all, outhitting Martin on the year, and he is younger, with fewer injury problems in his past. We made the right call on that one -- and given that Salty still has upside and Martin pretty much is what he is, I think we're on the right side of that particular line. I like Lavarnway as a prospect, but counting on him to develop into a big league fulltime starting catcher is still a leap of faith, so I'm very glad we have Salty around to hold down the fort.

Lavarnway really isn't ready to be a starting catcher. What I suspect will happen is that Salty sticks around, and Lavarnway will catch on the days Salty isn't catching, and DH on other days. It's working pretty well for Mike Napoli.

Well it wasn't an official Red Sox bat if it was aluminum, that's for sure. I don't think the Red Sox endorse bats that aren't made of wood. It sounds like a pretty standard hardware store baseball bat to me

Albers and Aceves over Wheeler. Either one can pitch setup no problem.

Maddon was a minor league catcher. Mike Scioscia is probably Exhibit A all around.

Lavs hasn't proven a lot yet, but he's an exciting prospect. He nearly got his first bomb today and he's showing a pretty good big league approach in the early going. As long as his defense is only Piazza bad, this guy's a big leaguer who can help a team. I could definitely see him playing a role where he DH's 75% of the time and catches a quarter of our games. Kind of a Mike Napoli role without as much first base. Lavarnway actually compares pretty well to Napoli as a whole. And you guys know from many years of me ranting how I feel about Napoli. Having a guy like that come up right under our feet has me excited, and I can;'t wait to see what this guy's gonna do with a couple years under his belt.

At the moment it's pretty hard to say no. Lavarnway is the better player on both sides of the ball right now. I've seen a lot of toolsy catchers who never make it, and as Lavarnway is right now he's probably a big league catcher, albeit a flawed one who still needs to do a lot of hard work on D.

In a lot of other parks he would have. This is a good young hitter.

He isn't great, he isn't terrible. His mechanics aren't wonderful and he doesn't look like a natural catcher, , but he gets the job done, got a good, strong accurate arm and his "pop time" is big league average. He's also been working very hard to improve, and has shown significant progress recently. Where he's gonna struggle is in the thinking aspects of catching, simply because he hasn't done them as long. Pitchcalling, setting the D, he'll have some trouble blocking big league breaking pitches, that's par for the course since as a catcher he's very raw. That said, his issue is lack of reps and experience. The tools are fine. This is definitely a guy who COULD LEARN to be a very good catcher. It's just that it'll take him a few years to get there.
