O god, don't say that... We'll, if he turns out to be a Marky mark Jr, maybe he'll also help us win a world series with clutch homers against the Yanks in the playoffs....

Chargers fire head coach Marty Schottenheimer .
TedWilliams101 replied to NateGrey's topic in Other Sports
I think people are giving Marty too much credit for the Chargers regular season record. Alot of the reasons behind the success of the team come from the ownership getting the right players and the work the rest of the coaching staff puts in. And lets not forget how talented a team they have. In the end, you'll only be as good as your players, and for SD, they got some damned good players. The Chargers have to be looking to win the Superbowl. They have a great team and I don't think they have to worry about getting to the playoffs; if the players play, they should make it. I'd rather have almost any other head coach in the playoffs over Marty and the Chargers will get that now. -
Is there any footage of him playing?

Red Sox in discussions with Rockies about Helton
TedWilliams101 replied to jacksonianmarch's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Getting this trade done is an absolute MUST. This is perfect for the sox. We could end up dumping Clement, tavarez, and maybe one prospect to pick up Helton. That gives us one the a huge threat for the middle of the lineup and great defense. We could move Youk to 3rd and ship out Lowell and maybe someone else for Scott Linebrink and could have either him or Pineiro as the closer. Makes the Pen, defense, and offense much better. So we may have to give up a prospect, but if we can get Helton and maybe turn around and get linebrink out of this, its a HUGE steal. The Sox have made some terrible trades the last 2 years, lets see them get a steal here. Don't let me down FO. -
I'm not saying I would give the Pats the edge for Brady playing so well indoors and on artificial turf, Im saying that becuase of this, I don't think Indy has very much of an edge. I would say it's more even. I'm certainly not downplaying Indy, just putting out there that Indy isn't the only team thats great on artifial turf.
-
I'm suprised to see ESPN's Acuscore actually has the Pat's as the slight favorites. I think from pure numbers and matchup, including the playoffs, the pats have the edge. Brady plays well on artificial turf too, hes like 23-1 on art turf, so I wouldn't necessarily give manning the edge in INDY.
-
I just don't see that hapenning. Peyton can't beat us when it matters. Right now the Patriots are playing the best they have in the last 2 years. Our defense is going to shut down the Colts. I also expect Brady to have a big game becuase they won't be able to shut him down. Peyton couldnt throw a TD pass vs KC, let alone BAL. I wouldn't be surprised if he had 2 TD passes, but I think our D can keep him to one, maybe 2 max. Our offense, though, should be able to walk all over them after the tough Chargers win.
-
Expect to see Manning struggle. Against a mediocre KC team and a great defensive Ravens team, Manning has been terrible. With Belichick planning and getting our defense ready, expect the same. Keeping the Chargers to only 20 points when they had sooo much yardage and time of possession, I think Peyton will get rocked again. I'm very interested to see just how good IND can keep their Def. There is no doubt that even when playing their best D, Indy doesn't have the toughness that the Chargers do on D. The Chargers led the league by ALOT in sacs and forced fumbles. They were a great blitzing team. Indy was LAST in the NFL in Sacs. I expect Brady to have a much easier game. It will no doubt be a tough game, but I just can't see the Colts stopping us.

He's just trying blame the Pats for something. He was so sure about going to the Superbowl as everyone was assuring him they would easily go to the Superbowl and win. He was angry he lost and the Pats celebration was the first thing he saw that he could target and jab the Pats for ruining his season. Sorry LT, but don't be a sore loser. So you think Marty's losing his job? He made an aweful lot of mistakes and couldn't keep his teams emotions in check.
-
My point is that you never give an underdog material to use to ignite a fire. The chargers gave the Patriots a little extra drive by what the team and writers said about the Patriots and their chances. I agree that the Chargers lost confidence, but they were pretty cocky out there when they were winning and Marty let them fall apart as Brady did what he does best, win. LT pissed me off by what he said about us before and after the game. In his statement he even said "It was upsetting to see because they won three Super Bowls," Merriman said, according to the Boston Herald. "It's like a guy on a fast break in basketball and dunking the ball and getting excited. You've won three Super Bowls. You don't do that." Isn't that what seperates winners from losers? It doesn't matter how many times you have won before. You always go into the playoffs with as much excitement, preperation, and determination. The reason you play football is to win the Superbowl. The team that shows the emotion and excitement almost always wins, as was the result. That little statement from LT made me scratch my head in astonishment; and everyone said LT was sooo smart. That sounds like something coming from the mouth of a genious..... And about the Belichick and Mangini refused hand shake, that wasn't a lack of class. Belichick was angry at Mangini for leaving his side and taking the head coach job for the team Belichick left because he hate the organization so much. To make it worse, Mangini went to a rival team and beat us in our house. I think people make to much out of it. Belichick didn't like what Mangini did, so he refused to shake his hand. Big deal.
-
I disagree. LT says the Patriots were disrespectful with their celebrations on the Chargers logo upon winning, I say it was ritchous. All of the Chargers and San Diego Media, let alone most of the rest of the world, gave the Patriots no chance. Newspapers had the nerve to comfort LT saying, "Don't worry LT, you'll be in the Superbowl, it's in the cards." Players and media were already planning for the trip to the AFC championship game, even the Superbowl. Haven't teams learned not to expect such an automatic win? Remember those 2001 Steelers who made their Superbowl hotel reservations and lost to the Pats in the Championship game? Expecting an automatic win is the most disrespectful thing you can do to your opponent and is usually something that will piss the opponents off so much that they win. Well, it happened again. And sorry LT, but if you don't like being taunted a bit, then either get people to stop disrespecting underdogs or win when you say you will. I loved the end of the game celebration it was a nice jab to all those who said we had no chance. Were the better team moving on while the "automatic Superbowl" Chargers are going home.

ignorant fool...

I think almost any manager out there can make the right in-game moves. Its the stuff they do off the field that tends to make them stand out.
-
Jackson, are you kidding me? Torre is one the best managers in baseball. Possibly one the best in history. Not only does he have the pressure of driving a team to the WS victory every year, but he has to build chemistry of a team made of all-stars. Thats tough and Torre has shown that he can do it as good as anyone.

I agree that Melky is a little over-hyped. I think he may very turn into a good contact hitter with slightly above average fielding in corner OF, but little power. Last time I checked, most teams don't need a power hitting corner OF. On most teams, Melky would be a good choice. I would expect his walks to rise a bit, but his ave. to decline a bit. I certainly wouldn't call him a huge prospect or new comer, but I wouldn't say he will suck either. He can be valuable to a lot of teams. Bosox, do you seriously believe Jeter would not play well on another team? Jeter is one of the best Defensive SS in baseball and he is also probably the best hitting SS. He is up there with the best in contact and ave, he walks, he has great discipline, great eye, average power, and has great speed and steals. He led off the yanks for a while, and was great at it. O ya, and he's increadibly clutch. Don't they call him "Mr. October"... ya, thats right. I certainly hate the Yankess, but calling Jeter anything short of amazing is absolutly wrong. He is the face of the Yankess, their captain, and very much soo their hero. Sounds like a HOF to me. Last time I checked, HOF caliber players don't tend to be the result of a loaded lineup.

I somewhat agree. However, I do think it's important to have an Ace closer in todays game. Shutting the door is very important, but its a big psychological advantage to having an Ace closer. Your team will be far more confident in winning with a slightly lead. Starting pitchers love having a great setup-closer punch, knowing that they have 2 solid innings they don't have to worry about. Its also good that your pen knows its place and is comfortable. And its great for the manager to know he might only need to bridge one inning before giving the game to the setup-closer punch. On the other side of the fence, I think it negatively impacts the opposing team. Look at someone as dominant as Mariano River. Almost any hitter facing him in the 9th with their team down FEELS hopeless, along with team. I think its far more a psychological thing. As for the sox, I disagree. I think we should look into get a trade for a lighs out closer. However, I agree we shouldn't ship coco away. I would much rather get a package around WMP, a prospect, etc. We do need a closer. If it wasn't the AL east I would agree. But in such a competitive division even the slightest improvements are necessary. Yes, you have to ballance it out, making sure your team will be better after a trade, but thats a whole different matter than a team not needing a designated closer. We should have one, we just need to be careful not to create any holes or downgrades elsewhere.

If I could catch a knuckleball...

New translator for Matsuzaka please!!
TedWilliams101 replied to riverside sluggers's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Ya, I watched the press conference and could help but wonder how they couldn't get a better translator for a $100 million pitcher being "sworn" into RSN with all of Japan watching. What happened? There were several reporters in the crowd that actually translated some questions and answers. What an embarissment. Thank god it was Scott Boras' translator and not the sox. -
As a guitarist on the board, I don't see how playing that game could possibly have that serious of an effect on his arm. There are tons of pitchers who actually play guitar and don't have problems. Unless he was "shredding" on guitar for 10 hours a day, I don't see that doing anything.
-
I think he will be far better than Contreras. I don't think Contreras' stuff is even close to as good as Matsuzaka. I see Matsuzaka w/ better command, more pitches, and better breaking pitches.

With out the pressure of being our #1 starter, i think he's going to do great things.

Could Brad Lidge be the final piece?
TedWilliams101 replied to scaffolds's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I'm sorry, but you must not be very intelligent. Yes, Wily Mo didn't commit an error in CF during the course of 27 games (194 innings). However, he also has below average speed and doesn't get very good reads on the ball, meaning a very bad approach. Now Coco only committed 1 error over the course of 103 games (900 innings). He played more than 4 times as many games, so an argument over his 1 error vs. Wily's 0 in CF is ridiculous. Coco also had 3 assists and 3 DP. But the real difference is athleticism. Coco has great speed, generally has a good read on the ball and takes the best approach, and he makes spectacular plays. How many amazing catches did he make last season, 10? 15?. I still remember that catch he made when he leaped into the air, was horizontal to the ground, and reached behind him to make the grab. Unbelievable. You won't ever see Wily making plays even 1/2 as good as that. If you think Wily Mo is even a 1/10 as good a fielder as Coco, you know absolutely nothing about baseball and I'd advise you to leave this forum and quite pretending your a fan of a sport you know nothing about. -
Could Brad Lidge be the final piece?
TedWilliams101 replied to scaffolds's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
If Wily Mo was our starting CF, i would probably have to hold my breath and cover my eyes everytime a ball was hit out there. I don't want to have to go through that... -
Could Brad Lidge be the final piece?
TedWilliams101 replied to scaffolds's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I would much rather to see Wily Mo K-out shipped out, even if it means a package, than to see crisp go. Think about it. A 5 year old has better defensive skill than wily mo. And I think crisp is a far better and more consistant bat. Everyone is talking about the upside of wily mo. One of the main reasons he has high strike out rates is becuase he doesn't have a great eye. You can't teach someone how to see the ball well. You can improve discipline a bit, but you can't get them to see the ball better. And thats just his offensive problems. I don't think I need to say anything about his lack of a glove. -
He should become Manny's personal bitch. Manny throws so many fits and s***, make Clement deal with him and make him happy.
