  1. Hawk, the sox FO was probably planning on giving Beckett a contract extension when they traded for him.
  2. I'd much rather have had Beckett and Lowell the last 2 years, and keep them for the next 3+ years than keeping Hanley and signing AJ Burnett. Burnett is good, but he's not Beckett. Hanley is a great player, but I will take the combo of Beckett/Lowell over him. Maybe when Hanley becomes a FA we can entertain the idea of bringing him back to Boston. But honestly, I think its a win win. We get the probable cy-young Beckett and WS MVP Lowell, both of whom were a big part of the championship. The Marlins got some good young prospects. We already have plenty of prospects, so its not like we needed to hold onto all of them. I would make that trade 100% of the time.
  3. He just said it's easy to fix their problems, they just need to hold onto the ball. He said that when they turn the ball over to another team that much, giving them good field position, its hard to win that game. I didn't take it as a knock on the offense. I thought he was trying to defend his team.
  4. I wouldn't want to lose Manny this year. I want him through 08. Even at his age, he is still one the best hitters in the game, and probably the most "clutch".
  5. But if it's not going to happen and isn't a good move, why mention it here as a good move? Thats my problem.
  6. My biggest problem with all this Arod crap is that we can resign Lowell. Sure he isn't Arod, but he is a WS MVP, he set a record for RBI for a Red Sox 3rd baseman, and he is WAY cheaper than Arod. And just about every RS fan hates Arod. But my biggest problem is all this Bonds talk. It is absolutely ridiculous to actually want Papi to play first base for a full season just so we can sign Bonds for 1 year as a DH. Did you not see all the knee problems he had this year just being in the DH role. You have to be absolutely crazy. And then the obvious problem is this, what the heck would you do if you signed Bonds and come spring training it becomes obvious that Papi's knees couldn't handle playing first for the season. Now what are you going to do? There is no space in the OF, so what, you now try to trade Bonds? Get real.
  7. I just think its classless to call your team the best when you just got swept in the WS by the best team. It takes away from our accomplishments, and I take it as an insult. You can say you are proud of your team, you can support your team, but saying your better than the team that swept you is disrespectful.
  8. I don't think the risk of adding Bonds and putting Ortiz at first is worth it. And what would they do if Papi couldn't play first, if his knee could handle it, or it was just too much stress on his body? What would you do, try to trade Bonds now? I mean, come on.
  9. I missed the Late show tonight. Does anyone know if they will rerun it in the next day or so?
  10. Arod would improve the team, yes, but I would rather have Lowell and spend money in other areas. If we can't get Lowell for some reason (would have to be one hell of a damned reason), then maybe I'd be fine with Arod. But its just a lot of damned money for 1 player. But absolutely no to Bonds. We don't need a 44 year old DH and Ortiz playing first base. Quit it with that crap. Theo would laugh at you.
  11. Yes, but the fact still remains that I don't want to spend $30 million on one player. It's really a philosophy thing. I don't think 1 player is worth that much. I'd rather spend $30 million in other areas (resign Lowell, MR, bench, etc).
  12. I don't want him period because I don't want to spend $30 million on one player. But I also don't like Arod. Until he shows me that he is team first and isn't me me me, I will continue to dislike him. Yes, he is probably the best player in baseball, but I don't think he is necessary to this team. We won a WS without, and we surely can win another without him. That is not saying we will win the WS again with this exact same team. We will make moves, but we don't need Arod to win. And he hasn't exactly shown to be a clutch guy in October, either.
  13. I don't want Arod, period. Especially not for $30 million. But I'm not throwing it out because I don't want it to happen, it won't happen. Lugo isn't going anywhere. Mark my words. He isn't going anywhere.
  14. Wow, you really think that Theo will trade Lugo after just signing him, and sign Lowell to an expensive 3 year contract and sign Arod to the biggest contract ever? Get real. It won't happen. There still is the possibility of Theo signing Arod for 3rd, but it would only happen if we lose Lowell.
  15. Because he is $30 million a year and isn't the type of player I would want on this team. If you can resign Lowell for $14 million a year or what ever he will get, I would much rather that. Then you can take the $16 million you would save and invest it in other areas, or save it for next off-season when better FA might be available (like maybe Santana).
  16. I just don't see why you would do this. Maybe you would make this move in MLB 2k7, but in real life, why move Papi out of the DH. You have a good 1st baseman that plays hard, works counts, walks, and is a gold glove 1st baseman. You have the best DH ever. Why mess with that to get a 43 year old guy who is hated everywhere and is a media circus. He is 43. He isn't the same guy he was 5 years ago. I'm sorry, but I don't like adding a 43 year old LF who could only DH and then having to trade Youk and have Ortiz play 1st. And after 1 year and Bonds is gone, you would just switch Papi back to the DH and then do what exactly for first base now that Youk is gone... Its just really really really unnecessary and backwards progress in my opinion. Going and getting Bonds and Arod seem to go against everything this organization is doing.
  17. With all of the knee problems he has had, do you really want to put him at first... He has been the best DH in the history of the game so far, why would you mess with him and have him start at first. Leave that alone. You don't want to put any more strain on Papi's knee than you have too.
  18. But the whole reason you have a DH is so that someone like Ortiz doesn't have to field a position. But why would you want to move Youk? He is a gold glove 1st baseman, and did you not just see what he did in the playoffs? Come on. The guy might not hit 30HR, but he is certainly valuable to this team.
  19. ORS, I can't take anyone seriously if they want Papi to play 1st base and Bonds on the team. Arod is debatable. But Papi at first? Are you kidding me.
  20. I'm fine with upgrades, just not Arod and Bonds. Bonds is too old and with all the steriods stuff, just stay away. Arod is a great player, yes, but also $30 million. I would MUCH rather have Lowell for cheaper and invest the rest in other areas. Of course Lowell isn't as good a player as Arod, but he is a great teammate and he did just win a WS MVP. How many WS MVP's does Arod have? (I know thats a bit unfair, but...) I just think our team is really good right now. If we can get upgrades, great. But not if it means parting with a lot of our young pitching prospects (Buchholz, Lester, MDC, etc)
  21. We won the WS without Bonds and Arod. We don't need them to win a championship. I don't like Arod personally, he is a great player, but I don't want $30 million locked up in him. And I think Lowell is the better fit for this team. He has shown us that he can hit and he is still gold glove defense. And as to Bonds, why the hell would you have Ortiz at first? He is a DH, leave that alone. Youk is a gold glove first baseman and is a good hitter. He works the count and gets on base. And he had an amazing October. Why "fix" it if it ain't broken?...
  22. Absolutely, positively, HELL NO. Papi at first? f*** off, keep him as the DH. Arod at 3rd? f*** off, resign Lowell. We don't need a $30 million cancer. Bonds DH, f*** off. I hate bonds, he is way too old, and way to selfish. Can you imagine both Bonds and Arod on this team? Any magic or good chemistry this team has would be gone by spring training. Haren? As many have said he is not available.
  23. The parade was SWEET.
  24. I couldn't sleep. I only had 1 class at 2, then went over to Fenway at 3 to wait for the guys to return home.
  25. Can we expect crowds at Fenway around 3:45, when the Sox are supposed to return? I only have class from 2-3 and I'm thinking about heading over. I tried to get to sleep a few hours ago, but f*** it, I'm too pumped up.
