  1. Sorry, I know this isn't the proper place, but I couldn't resist. Found the headline somewhere online: Smizik: Pirates' fans find offseason depressing http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06323/739542-194.stm Is that true, MC?
  2. Indeed. But a 6 man rotation does make a bit of sense in this situation. Paps is a rookie and has never thrown a full season before. Matsuzaka is a great unknown, under tremendous pressure, and is used to 5 days off. Schill is old, Wake is old. Beckett has recurring blister problems, and has only gone over 200 innings once (in '06). That being said, the only thing missing in the 6th starter. I would question the priorities of the front office if they went looking for a 6th starter when there are so many other holes to be filled (RF, short, closer).
  3. No, but if anyone can pull it off, it's Wake.
  4. In other developments, here's a head-scratcher: Clemens as closer. From MLB.com: Meanwhile, there was another little nugget that appeared in the Globe on Friday concerning free-agent pitcher Roger Clemens, who started his Hall of Fame career with the Red Sox 20 years ago. The newspaper suggested that if the Sox could convince Clemens to waive his family clause -- which allows him to be home in Houston between starts -- and return to Boston as its closer, it would possibly solve the team's biggest need. Reactions?
  5. LA Times reporting that the Angels are offering Drew "5 or 6 years for about $14 million a year". http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/angels/la-sp-angels18nov18,1,4887915.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-mlb-angels&ctrack=1&cset=true Too much time. :thumbdown
  6. It also seemed like Beckett threw a lot less curves this past year than he usually does/did when he was in FLA. It was almost as is management wanted him to not throw them as often, give the blisters a chance to heal up and the arm to actually get to 200 innings, and said the hell with outcomes. I know Beckett is a stubborn s.o.b., but there is no way a big-league pitcher with a curve as good as his keeps attacking AL power hitters with fastballs all the time, unless he has been, let's say strongly encouraged to stay away from his curve. Hopefully, the handcuffs will be off this season, and he will mix in his curve more often.
  7. It's like you're some sort of savant, example. From SI.com: Angels owner Arte Moreno promised a "major'' move this winter, and sources indicate the Halos are ready to dive into the Soriano sweepstakes with a bold five-year offer. The Angels are a great organization but occasionally have had trouble selling stars on coming there, and it could happen again since there are some folks who believe Soriano would not only prefer the National League but also the East Coast. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/11/16/thursday.scoop/index.html Also includes a nice tidbit about how the Sox may make a serious push to trade Manny after Lee and Soriano sign. Hmmm...
  8. Astros reportedly made offers to both Lee and Soriano. If true, I'd expect one of them to be gone in a couple of days. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4340964.html
  9. Nobody in the '07 class who jumps out, either. Eckstein and Carlos Guillen are probably the best of the lot (Young too, but with a club option he ain't going anywhere). And no good looking prospects that I can see. Gonzo would be a decent trade chip if they can sign him on the relative cheap, say $3-$4 mill per. Seems the way to go to me.
  10. In 2006, Lugo made almost $5 mill. He is the only decent ss on the market this year - he's going to be looking for $$$ or years. I personally don't want the Sox to give him either. Gonzo will come about $2-$3 mill per year cheaper, at least. Also, that poor performance you mentioned - a switch in leagues, or a response to pressure? Playing in Fenway is different than playing in Tropicana Field. This one reeks of Renteria to me.
  11. Especially with a stable of power pitchers who attack the strike zone - having a better defensive shortstop behind them is going to let them do that with a lot more confidence. Witness second half '04.
  12. Why sign both when 2b is Pedrioa's spot to lose at this point? Sign Gonzo to a 2 year deal (less $, better defense), pass on Lugo, and use the extra $ to put towards Matsuzaka, a closer, or an OF.
  13. ...Oregon, that is. Howdy. Been reading the threads here since the start of last season. I almost joined a couple of times, never got around to it. Come to find out that Example1 is a good buddy of mine here in the rainy Rose City, so I figured, if we can talk about Sox baseball for hours on end together, why not expand the circle of discussion. Looking forward to it.
