  1. http://www.nypost.com/seven/11172006/sports/yankees/shea_its_so_yankees_george_king.htm The yankees are apparently eyeing Shea Hillenbrand as their top 1b target now that Nomar is all but set in LA. Cash wanted to go defensive, and this is not the way to go. His bat is still very potent and he has been known to be a solid clutch player. The problem is that he is a malcontent who can be equivalent to sheffield in his bitching and he is not a solid OBP kind of guy. It would make the lineup even more dangerous, but I dont think it is a fit.
  2. compensation should always be an issue, especially when the sox lack upper level FA talent. A lot of those golden gooses if you will, will not turn out. Having a ton of low level talent may develop into an upper level talent who may develop into a solid MLB player. Until you have enough who are ready to start pluggin holes, you should never stop considering your draft status.
  3. for once, ESPN is right. If Manny is dealt, Ortiz will take Epstein hostage and be placed on round the clock suicide watch. Manny is quietly the monster who helped create the monster known as Big Papi.
  4. No he wouldnt. Long injury history followed by a yr of being owned in the AL East. Zito's biggest draw is that he is left handed, young, effective and durable. Beckett is right handed, young, fragile, and ineffective (at least for last yr).
  5. Gonzo is a type B player, right?
  6. Remember, perceived value ORS. Sheffield was not worth nearly the amount that was given up, but both teams will benefit. The tigers in the short term and the yankees in the long term.
  7. Coco has shown no reason for optimism. He is a ??? to begin with and expecting him to miraculously turn it on and be a .300/.850OPS guy again is not likely to happen.
  8. I have no doubt that sheff will continue to hit. He has bat speed to spare and will likely play for the next 3 yrs and call it quits. At the same time, HE HAD NO POSITION. How many times does it need to be said. The guy was not going to win the RF spot because his defense is totally dreadful. He wasnt going to play 1b, because his defense is totally dreadful. Giambi is the DH who is locked up for huge money for another 2 yrs. Where the f*** is this guy going to play? At the same time, prospects these days are worth more than they were 30yrs ago. Nowadays, scouting is so good, that top talent is usually considered top talent for a reason. When you can get a pitcher who has potential #1 starter who is 23 and in AAA already, then you have a find. Thow in Whelan as a potential closer of the future and you have a good deal for both teams.
  9. or it is because he flat out sucks and has had a chance to win a spot everywhere he has gone.
  10. I guess my take is, if you have 11mil to spare, throw it into pitching. The sox O, although no longer an elite offense, can still be dominant. The pitching is what is so shaky and getting one starter is not going to fix that.
  11. while I dont think it will happen, I will admit that I heard the same thing on ESPN radio. They are just trying to stir up a shitstorm as always.
  12. he is 35 and never made over 1.25 mil in a season. This is his last shot at a payday and he will get 10mil. I would do that in a heartbeat. This is his deal that sets him up for life.
  13. yes I am my friend. 2yrs 23 mil. LOTS of money there. This could signal the end of Vernon Wells in toronto.
  14. I guess my question now is, since the sox have him and they happen to have an open RF slot, why not save the 11mil a season it would take to land Drew and hand the spot to the very affordable Pena?
  15. They really couldnt use 37HR and 110 RBI, nah, that isnt useful or anything.
  16. I am adding his entire career together and projecting out to 550ABs. Still, you would think that one of the 3 teams he was on would hang onto his raw power.
  17. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2663691 getting close to completion. Big coup for the Mapl...um, I mean the Jays.
  18. I truly think there is something seriously wrong with Wily Mo Pena. Hear me out. The Yankees signed him initially and moved him for Drew Henson. He goes to CIN and hits 26 HRs in 300ABs. He then spends the next season backing up in the OF while still hitting 19 HRs in 300 abs yet he sits behind Kearns and this past yr he hit 11 HRs in 276 ABs. If you project that out a 550AB season, that is a little over 30HRs a season. He is going to be 25 in January. Why are the sox reluctant to hand him the RF spot? Why are they about to throw 5 yrs 55 mil at JD Drew when they have a guy who hit over .300 last yr and has averaged 30HRs for every 500ABs. What is wrong with this guy? Why has every team he has been on tried to get rid of him? Now he is being dangled for a closer or for a set-up man mind you.
  19. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6175216 2yrs 6mil for a right handed bat who mauls lefties. He was a target for the yankees for sure as a full time 1b.
  20. lol. Yeah, move a 200 inning pitcher into the pen and a guy who couldnt cut it as a starter throughout his career into the rotation. Stellar idea.
  21. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2663083 good deal for both sides. Bell is a monster who just hasnt gotten the chance, and Ring is a solid lefty. This now atones for the loss of Seanez and Embree for SD, but also clears the way for SD to deal Linebrink for offense.
