  1. 2 types of fastballs makes it 5. He has a 4 seamer that comes close to 100mph and a 2 seamer that sits mid 90s. Beckett up until this season (I havent seen him yet to tell) doesnt have a 2 seamer.
  2. you are basing this off his 3 appearances in ST, which were all early? Cmon now Gom, this isnt hype. Check the stats. Check the radar reads at his starts. Kid throws mid 90s consistently. He has a 5 pitch arsenal unlike Beckett. And he is young, real young. There have been plenty of yankee prospects who have been overhyped in the past, but this kid has backed it up with performance and stuff. I expect him to be good early and blossom into an ace.
  3. I think we see Hughes when we plan to keep him in the majors for good. Right now, we actually dont need a 5th starter until the 21st (9 days from now) against you guys at the Fens. Wang could be ready by then.
  4. Miguel Cabrera is better than Manny was at a younger age. But aside from that and their position, your analogy is pretty good. Both high AVG, high power, guys with a great eye.
  5. whoever compared him to a young Manny doesnt really know what they are talking about. Wily is a young Dave Kingman. All or nothing power without a real idea of what a strike zone is. The only kid I have heard the "young Manny" tag line is in Tampa right now and that's Jose Tabata. I never agree with calling a kid in A+ ball a young anybody, but he is the only one recently that I remember the term "young Manny" being used on.
  6. the comparisons to Beckett are way off. For one, Beckett throws a 4FB and a curve as his main pitches. His change is secondary. Really, only 3 pitches coming your way. Felix throws 5 and locates them all. Plus, Felix throws a few mph harder.
  7. with his stuff, he will have games where he is trying to pitch to contact and the other team just cannot make contact. He lasted 8 on opening day, so he was doing something right. I am just not sure I have ever seen a nose to toes curve in the mid 80s before. Or a sharp slider that has the bottom drop out at 93mph. And the pitch I was most impressed with he threw maybe 5 times. His 85mph changeup was like a screwbie. This guy has nintendo type stuff. It really is aweinspiring.
  8. Mussina expects to miss a start, but avoid the DL per rotoworld. He is saying he strained it, and definitely didnt "pull" it.
  9. Orel Hershiser called Youkilis one of the best contact hitters in the game. Does he know Youk K'd 120 times last yr?
  10. he got a rousing ovation when Drew broke up the no-no.
  11. He is the only pitcher I would trade him for, and I wouldnt even come close to thinking twice.
  12. Felix will be twice the pitcher Dice K will be. Well, seeing as Felix is 6 yrs younger and his huge frame will likely allow him to pitch a few more yrs into his late 30s, early 40s, I'd assume that on workload alone. Dice K is a nice pitcher. Very fun, good stuff, good location. Felix is on another planet right now.
  13. BTW, if this isnt an invitation for you guys to jump out to a huge lead in the division, I dont know what is. Once we get totally healthy and get into the warm weather/ dog days of summer when the bats are all goin well and the arms are throwin well, we will be tough to beat. Better build that lead now.
  14. Torii Hunter makes a big difference with his range. He ran down 2 balls late in the game that would have been big hits. We put the ball in play rather well, we got our pitches to hit, we just popped em up. Ortiz threw strikes, something he hasnt been able to do with regularity in his career. Tip your cap. But at the same time, I am real angry that we got beat when our best wasnt out there. The best teams lose 60+ games a yr. I can handle a loss. I just dont like losing games when the obvious choice is overlooked.
  15. Farns catches my ire a little. But a manager needs to know his personnell. You have a lefty specialist who is lights out against lefties. You have one of the best lefties in the game up with the winning run on 2nd and 1 out. You get Myers up warming. Everything sounds like you should be putting Myers in, right? WRONG. I dont mind if he doesnt use Myers. But if he doesnt want to use him, release him. The guy only adds 35IP a season. We could easily put a mopup guy in his place and get another 35-50IP out of that roster spot. And if he wants to keep him, I want him in every game whenever the opposing team has a lefty up in a big spot. Otherwise, why have him on the team at all?
  16. I am seriously hating Joe Torre right now.
  17. Once he K'd Punto, I'd have put Myers in the game for Mauer, I would have walked Cuddyer and then pitched to Morneau. After Morneau, I'd have gone to Bruney.
  18. When you have a pitcher like Farnsworth in a close game you need to open your eyes and be ready to pull him at a moments notice. When he is on, or even okay, he is untouchable. But when he is bad, he is so horrible that he ends games (negatively). Torre has Myers in the pen yet keeps him there when Mauer is hitting with an open base and the winning run on 2nd. Then he just lets Farns have it and make the game a no doubter. Man, Joe is a pretty dumb guy, but this was a pisspoor job of managing the pen after having one hell of pitching duel.
  19. And our fantastic bullpen is only as strong as its weakest link. And that link is Torre.
