  1. They just took another high school kid in lefty Randall Fant. Dont know much about him, but I would assume he is another signability guy. The amount of HS talent in their draft pool is ridiculous
  2. The Yankees are going a different route than the sox. They have taken college guys who have fallen for some reason. I love the Stoneberner pick and if the reports from BA are correct, we might have added some much needed power to our system. I dont think many people understand how dire our power outage is in the system. We have Montero and Romine as power threats. Laird was our HR champ last yr, but he isnt hitting thus far. And after that, we dont have any big power (outside of our AAAA guys in AAA).
  3. They are going for broke. The 9 signability guys they drafted are all gonna be 500K+ signee guys with Renfroe being the most expensive in the 3+ mil range. I have a feeling they pull down their first rounder, play around with Renfroe and either sign him and let a few others walk or let Renfroe walk and sign 3 or 4 of the others.
  4. Hmm. We draft Luke Murton in the 19th round. We drafted him once before and he didnt sign. He's a senior now.
  5. Another signability pick. Renny Parthemore, 6'5" RHP with a commit to PSU can get it up into the mid 90s. The sox are going for broke. They have selected 9 players through 18 picks who are expected to exceed slot by a TON.
  6. From Lane Meyer nomaas.org In terms of good picks in the second 10 to this point.... Brett Gerritse in the 12th round is gonna be a tough sign. Big kid at 6'3" 200lbs out of HS, already throws low 90s with a lot of sink. DeAngelo Mack in the 13th round is an athlete who impressed in the Cape Cod league. He has a lot of raw power, but is more of a project than most college athletes. But he does have a high ceiling Graham Stoneberner in the 14th round is another project with high ceiling out of Clemson. Mid 90s sinker with a plus potential breaking ball. Problem being, the guy is very inconsistent and has walked a lot of batters at times Bryan Mitchell in the 16th round is a HS pitcher who throws high 80s to low 90s with a quirky motion. He will not be an easy sign. Chad Thompson, the yankees 17th round pick, might be the toughest sign so far. 6'8" righty with mid 90s potential is just coming off TJS
  7. Caleb Cotham will be a signability pick in the 5th round. He was projected to be a 1st rounder for 2010, so getting him now and signing him would be a nice coup. The three consecutive left handed college guys intrigue me. Elam has the best stuff (2nd rounder out of HS) but he is the biggest project. Lyons is listed at #153 from BA with a deep arsenal and tops out at 92. I think the yankees are trying to stay near slot in the first 10 picks and potentially get a few signability guys later on.
  8. Adam Warren 4th round pick. RHP from UNC Caleb Cotham 5th round pick. RHP Vanderbilt Robert Lyerly 6th round pick. 3b from UNC Charlotte Sean Black 7th round pick. RHP Seton Hall Samuel Elam 8th round pick. LHP Notre Dame Gavin Brooks 9th round pick. LHP UCLA Tyler Lyons 10th round pick. LHP Oklahoma St.
  9. Not sure what to say about the fact that we are raiding the college pitching market. The biggest talent is Elam, who is lefty and throws mid 90s. He just has no control.
  10. For the first 10 rounds, the sox are taking a TON of signability cases. Jacobs, Younginer and Kline are big time talents (albeit raw) and are all going to be asking for a LOT of money. Renfroe as well. In order for the sox to sign their top 10 picks, they are gonna have to spend about 10 mil.
  11. Sorry... Sox 4th Round Pick- Jeremy Hazelbaker CF Ball State Sox 5th Round Pick- Seth Schwindenhammer IL HS LF Sox 6th Round Pick- Brandon Kline Maryland HS RHP Sox 7th Round Pick- John Younginer South Carolina HS RHP Sox 8th Round Pick- William Wilkinson Augusta St Univ RF Sox 9th Round Pick- Kendal Volz Baylor Univ RHP Sox 10th Round Pick- Brandon Jacobs Georgia HS
  12. Adam Warren 4th round pick. RHP from UNC Caleb Cotham 5th round pick. RHP Vanderbilt Robert Lyerly 6th round pick. 3b from UNC Charlotte Sean Black 7th round pick. RHP Seton Hall Samuel Elam 8th round pick. LHP Notre Dame Gavin Brooks 9th round pick. LHP UCLA
  13. I dont think Fuentes or Wilson will be tough signs. Renfroe will be, hell, that is the only reason he wasnt taken in round 2. He's asking for 3.5mil, which would be mid 1st round money.
  14. I was working until about the 8th inning, sorry I wasnt around.
  15. In summary of day 1.. The Yankees got a high upside OFer with power in Heathcott who will be over slot, but shouldnt be so far over that it becomes prohibitive. He fills a void the size of the Grand Canyon in our system in terms of OF talent with power. He's a CFer in waiting. And they got a line drive hitting catcher who scouts are split on, but everyone agrees he is a professional hitter right now. Considering that both picks are unprotected, I think the yankees did a very good job. I would have loved to have seen Renfroe in that second spot, but I get why they didnt nab him (dont want a repeat of Cole from a yr ago). But thus far, there isnt a pick that is an absolute head scratcher (like Bittle last yr) through 3 rounds. And if the rumor of the yankees having a draft budget is true, these two kids should leave a lot of room to sign some signability cases on day 2. I am excited for the next round.
  16. From what I can tell, the sox are having a very nice draft thus far. Their first two guys shouldnt be too far over slot if they are over at all. Their third guy is gonna be 6-7 times over slot if they are willing to match his demands. But if they sign all 3, they have a safe pick in Wilson, a high ceiling guy with a lot of potential in Renfroe and a speedster with the potential to become a solid hitter in Fuentes. Not a bad 3 rounds for Boston.
  17. Beckett is gonna get a whole lot more than Burnett did.
  18. Hmm, ESPN has Renfroe topping out at 93mph.
  19. In Casey Kelly's case, having him pitch wasnt a bad thing since Kelly touched 96 mph and was developed for a HS pitcher. Renfroe throws a bit slower (tops out at 93) and isnt as polished. If you put a gun to Theo's head and made him choose, I bet he'd leave Kelly at P and put Renfroe at SS. But it cannot hurt to try. Maybe he'll do the same thing he did with kelly and start him in the rotation for the first half and then at SS in the second.
  20. I really wanted this kid. Very solid two way talent akin to Casey Kelly. More of an offensive player than a pitcher, but he could go either way as a third round talent (I thought he was a late 1st round talent as a SS). He's got a big price tag and that scared the yankees off with their second rounder being unprotected, so they went safer. If the sox are willing to go to the 3 mil necessary to nab Renfroe, then he is actually the best pick on day 1 IMO, well above Fuentes.
  21. Prospect wire had Murphy as the #1 prospect out of the state of Florida. His numbers in high school were ridiculous. 1.97OPS, 4Ks, 11 homers. He also showcased in the Jupiter, FL world baseball wood bat tourney and was impressive. John Manuel says that scouts are split on him. Some think he is a supplemental round talent, others think he grades out more as a third round talent. And it all depends on how he is viewed behind the dish. Some say he will be an above average defender with a plus arm, others think he will end up in the corner OF slot or at 3b. Regardless, he's a high projection high schooler to add to the pile with Heathcott. Overall, two big talents to add to the system, which is not a bad thing.
