If Lowell's healthy Kotsay's on the bench and he's better than Nomar. If Lowell isn't healthy, trading for Kotsay means nothing because you can't win with a Nomar/Kotsay platoon anyway, you have to trade for someone better than Nomar. Long story short, this conversation is pointless.

I think I answered the question in my post. I do - and even if I didn't I would not trade him for a guy who is at best a marginal upgrade over Jeff Bailey.

Bates is also just three years into his professional career as he was a four year player at NC State. Based on his line this season in AA there's no reason to think he can't develop into a major league hitter, and based on that there's no way I'd deal him for an oft-injured Nomar Garciaparra when Nomar would be a marginal upgrade over Bailey/Kotsay as it is. This of course assumes Lowell comes back healthy.

He should have gone to Papelbon FIRST, which is the point. You can't have a lead to save if you don't get through the bottom of the 9th anyway.
