1. For you, absolutely.
2. Not good times up in here.
3. So when can I start to worry about this game?
4. More innings, more strikeouts from a supposed power pitcher. I did say he's been solid, but I really wonder how long it will continue. So we're not going to discuss anything or offer opinions on what we think will happen? The numbers say Penny is a worse 2nd half pitcher than 1st half pitcher. His peripherals are OK if you disregard the fact that he gives up over 10 H per 9 and the FB% as increased while the GB% has decreased. I'll put my money on him struggling. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it turns out not to be the case.
5. Only because the problems with this team that presented Worst Case Scenario for the Sox last offseason are beginning to rear their ugly head.
6. How about running through Penny's? Bad peripherals are fine when you don't give up runs. I can defend DiceK's season because even though it was flukey and out of the ordinary, he still won 18 games and posted a sub 3 ERA. Brad Penny can't make that claim, and while I think he's been solid I'll put my money on a regression instead of a DiceK fluke 2nd half. It's OK though, I'm just going to get called out for being a pink hat or whatever.
7. Crespo is skipped again. J_E on the clock until 8:00 tonight.
8. 2.90 5.02 Can you tell me the significance of these numbers? So, what you're essentially asking, is to cherry-pick the best season for every player and use that as the predictor of performance going forward instead of using the career as a whole? Just want to be clear. Let me know.
9. Saito has pitched 13.2 IP since June 1. That's almost two whole months. He's also struggled lately, especially with his command (7.11 ERA in his last 6.1 IP, 1 K/BB ratio, 1.109 OPS against). What? Even if his shoulder surgery had something to do with it, his peripherals don't leave me with much hope. 1.5 WHIP, Over 10 H/9, less than 6 K/9, and this: http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/535_P_season_full_9_20090720.png And Teixeira would have been even better. Huzzah for a new toolsy CF! No shortage of those in the system.
10. He sure has. What effect has his and Smoltz's 5 inning affairs had on the effectiveness of the bullpen? His peripherals are in line for a regression and since he has not been a very good 2nd half pitcher in his career, everything's lined up for him really struggling from here on out.
11. His power would be completely sapped in Fenway?
12. Wright's putting up a mid-.800 OPS in that cavern of a ballpark and is a GG defender. NWIH is he traded.
13. What was the counter-move? It's not too tough to understand. A healthy Teixeira is worth about 4-5 wins more than a gimpy Lowell and Kotsay. Take him away from the Yanks and put him on the Red Sox and you have that 8-10 game swing.
14. And what's that? God forbid someone ever criticizes the FO.
15. That's fair, although I could make the argument that he is not a true 4th OF because he cannot play every day without getting worn down. People mock JD Drew's "fragility" but we would be screwed if he or any of the other OFers went down. Baldelli is not an everyday solution. .266/.337/.436/.773 for a 96 OPS+ is decent. I'd hesitate to call it "key" He was pitching over his head and has regressed. That's what I mean when I say he's lost some luster. Saito barely pitches and has cost us a few games this season. I question the strategy of investing $1.5 million in anyone who is a question mark to throw a single pitch during the season. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=pennybr01&year=Career&t=p
Half|ERA|OPS|tOPS 1st|3.97|.730|98 2nd|4.37|.759|105
Who are we going to trade for? Your boy Teahen isn't available according to most reports. Tex only cost money. Whatever you'd like.
16. When he's right?
17. Couple interesting tidbits: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4341612&name=gammons_peter&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines Sooo, Matt Holliday in LF next season?
18. He's almost 25, and Jon Lester did have that whole cancer thing.
19. Rocco Baldelli has what, 100 ABs to this point? Calling him key is laughable at best. Ramirez has been the best acquisition for sure but he's lost a lot of luster. Smoltz looks like a waste, as does Saito who never pitches. Penny has been OK, but he's going to regress pretty good in the 2nd half IMO. And you talk about the minor league depth that lets us replace people midseason? Who in the minors is going to replace Mike Lowell when he goes down again (which he will). Their approach was OK after losing out on Teixeira this offseason. He was their #1 priority and they lost out, which in and of itself is a failure, and these lotto tickets haven't worked either.
20. I agree with you. I think the Sox will baby Buchholz, they did it the other night.
21. Keep beating that drum. You forgot to tell me Teixeira's wife loved New York more than Boston. If Teixeira is a Red Sox the lead in this division is 4+ games IMO, possibly more. This offseason is looking like a colossal failure from this FO. I'll await the pink hat comments from Dutchy which are sure to follow.
22. Not the point. After this offseason, Dojji doesn't get to beat the "We need to replace Mike Lowell" drum.
