  1. Red Sox call up Lin, option Gomez Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff May 20, 2012 12:07 PM By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff PHILADELPHIA — A few notes from Citizens Bank Park on a beautiful Sunday morning: • The Red Sox, who are a little short in the outfield, optioned 1B Mauro Gomez and called up Che-Hsaun Lin from Pawtucket. • Cody Ross (left foot) was walking around much better than he was on Saturday and said he feels much better, too. He's hopeful of getting back in the lineup on Monday. His plan is to "treat the crap out of it" during the game. • Ryan Sweeney is questionable with whiplash, the result of that spectacular diving catch on Saturday. He also was checked for a concussion after the game. But the DL seems unlikely at this point. • Jacoby Ellsbury is strengthening his shoulder but has yet to even try dry swings. So he's not close to returning. • The players were having a good laugh about Vicente Padilla's fly ball to deep center field in the eighth inning. Padilla told Dustin Pedroia that he had not picked up a bat in at least a year. He also revealed that he's a switch hitter, which nobody knew. Padilla played in Philadelphia and when he came to the plate, Jimmy Rollins motioned to reliever Joe Savery that Padilla was a capable hitter. But Savery threw him a belt-high fastball — "It was a pie," Pedroia said — and Padilla clobbered it. But it was to dead center and Shane Victorino tracked it down. • Bobby Valentine said he appreciates it "a thousand percent" that Adrian Gonzalez is willing to play right field, noting that few players of his stature would be "willing or able" to switch positions like that. • This will be two games in a row that Jarrod Saltalamacchia is catching Josh Beckett and Salty is catching a day game after a night game against a lefty. Valentine likes what he sees from his catcher of late.
