  1. I'd love you guys to explain your feelings as soon as Foulke flipped it to Mientkiewicz for the final out. I have only been a baseball (and Red Sox) fan for about 4 years. Never really took notice of the sport before they started showing games here on Fox. Since then, though, I've loved every single minute of it (well not exactly - eg. 2003 ALCS game 7 - but you know what I mean!). I must say I was tingling when we got the final out, when Buck said "Red Sox fans have longed to hear it...the Boston Red Sox are world champions!" I know it wasn't sensational commentary, but that moment was just amazing. Then at the end of the broadcast, when they played the song "At Last," the tingles and shivers came back. I can't imagine what it must have felt like for the long-time Red Sox fans. The pain of the past makes it all the more sweeter - I know, my football team here hasn't won a premiership since 1964 and I long for the day I will finally see us win one. I'd like to hear all your thoughts and emotions the moment the Sox finally did it!
  2. Yeah the pitching was sensational. Don't forget Foulke though - he was almost as big a part as those guys. It's strange because pitching won us the World Series yet it's tough to give pitchers MVP. Not only did the starters only play in one game, but who deserves it more - Schill, Pedro or Lowe? Manny played and hit in every game and that makes him the easier choice.
  3. Yep! Even heard some radio programs discuss the "Curse of the Bambino." Time to head to the TV. Game on soon!
  4. Championships are won by being ruthless. When your opponent is down, don't put your hand out and help them up. You stick the boots in. Momentum is such a powerful force in sport. You only have to look at the 9th inning of game 4 for how one hit can generate enough momentum to win a series from 0-3 down. The Cards are playing badly and the Sox are red hot, but it only takes one inning, one hitter, one pitch to swing the momentum of a game and even a series. Let's not take that chance! And just a sign of how big this is, the newspaper today dedicated a whole page to the Red Sox. In a place where baseball is not very popular and the usual article take up about 3 inches of paper space, this is a big thing!
  5. It looks like it's game on. So excited and nervous. Let's silence St Louis!
  6. As they say though, good teams win when below their best. Terrible defensive display and Wake didn't have a good day. Anyone predict the two-run homer from Bellhorn when facing a 1-2 pitch? I surely didn't! The other great play was by Foulke in the 8th with 1 out and the bases loaded. Got Rolen and struck out Edmonds and didn't allow the go-ahead run. How good has Foulke been? And the 2 errors from Manny...thought it may have been another new way to lose. 1 down, 3 to go!
  7. That's quite funny CrespoBlows because the same thing happened to me (well, only for the last three games, but still worked!). A friend of my parents was in Boston (her daughter lives there now) and she brought back (to Australia) a red sox hat for me. She came back just before the ALCS started. I didn't wear it for the first four games, but felt we needed some luck so I put it on for games 5, 6 and 7. Here's hoping the hat continues the streak!
  8. Melbourne Demons. It's the oldest football club in the world - founded in 1858. The league did not start until 1897, but the Melbourne Football Club was found a while before it. We had a hugely successful era in the 1950s and early 1960s. We won six premierships between 1955 and 1964 and were the powerhouse of the competition. But it all went downhill from then. We have not won a premiership since...40 years and counting. As I was born in 1982, I haven't seen a Melbourne premiership. It's funny in a way the similarity between the Sox and Demons. My reason for choosing to support the Sox is partly because they have red and blue (the colours of the Demons), are called the Red Sox (Melbourne used to be called the Redlegs a while back prior to the Demons) and are a traditional club like the Demons. They may seem like petty reasons, but unlike the Demons who I inherited off my parents and was a fan the day I was born, my family have no interest in baseball so I had to select a team myself. The other similarity is the "curse of the Bambino." While "curse" hasn't been a word used to describe the Demons, the coach of the team that took us to six premierships between 1955 and 1964 was sacked in 1965, and since then we have not won a premiership. Like the Sox, our fans are long-suffering and are success-starved. We have made two grand finals in my lifetime and got crushed in both of them. In 1988 we lost by a grand final record margin of 96 points and in 2000 we lost to a team that only lost one game the whole season. So I empathise with long-suffering Red Sox fans! How long have you been a Red Sox fan RedSoxRooter?
  9. What an unbelievable few days! My first post here...but I've been reading for a while though. I'm a sox fan from Australia. Don't know how many are in that category! To read about all the hard luck, the disappointment, the heartache over the years and then to finally make the World Series is awesome. I only got into baseball four years ago, but enough time to experience heartbreak as a red sox fan in last year's ALCS. People bagged me for choosing the red sox but hopefully I'll be the one laughing at them in 10 days' time. Congratulations to the team and everyone involved! When Sierra grounded to Pokey and Mentkiewicz held his arms up in triumph after the final out was recorded, it was really a sensational feeling. (And I've only been into baseball for four years). I can't imagine what the long-time fans must be feeling like. I have some idea - my first love is Aussie rules footy and my team has not won the premiership for 40 years, with only two grand final (equivalent to world series) appearances since then for two losses. So I guess that's about half of what the sox have gone through with 86 years between drinks and four World Series defeats. Can't wait for Sunday morning (Aussie time) for Game 1 at Fenway. Let's go red sox!
