    This is true, but you also have to consider the ages and the ceilings of both players. Both teams got what they were looking for. The Yankees sought a long term solution and they got that. The Red Sox sought a short term solution and they got that.

    Actually, I'm not accusing the Red Sox of anything. Anytime I've discussed payroll, it has only be in relation to the Yankees, not the Red Sox. Nothing about the Red Sox bothers me.

    I don't think Gom was ever comparing the two off-seasons. All he's saying, correctly or incorrectly, is that he doesn't think a team should "cry poverty" when it is capable of this type of financial might.

    CD, if the Yankees sign Holliday, there is no way they resign Damon. This is for a couple reasons... 1. Because of their words, and their actions, it appears as if the Yankees aren't willing to spend a ton of money this offseason. It would probably be a stretch for them to even sign Holliday, and if they do that, I don't see them bringing Damon back. 2. The whole idea of letting Matsui go, while making no way attempt to retain him, is to create flexibility in the DH spot (Rodriguez, Posada, Jeter, and Damon if he comes back). Signing both Holliday and Damon would not allow them to do this.

    While he choice of wording my be a bit off, I think TD's point has some merit. While it doesn't really seem like the Yankees are players for big free agents this offseason, if the price comes down, I think it's possible.

    If his price comes down, I certainly think it's possible. I suggested this in one of the Yankees' threads.

    It's an interesting idea, but one that I wouldn't hold my breath for. I think the Yankees, in the end, will re-sign Damon and bring in some rotation depth like you talked about.

    Right, I don't get this. Buchholz may very well be traded, but signing Lackey is hardly proof that it's going to happen.

    I don't think the Red Sox are done, and I think there's a good chance they acquire Holliday or Gonzalez. I hope you're right though. There is an interesting possibility that if the Yankees can't reach a deal for Damon, and the price on Holliday comes down a bit, that the Yankees could snag him. I would really like that, although, Gom, I know you wouldn't.

    It's not as bad a day as you're making it out to be. I expected the Red Sox to make a big free agency splash. This doesn't surprise me. Now, we'll see what they do after this (Holliday, Gonzalez). Also, Halladay is now out of the division, and not on the Red Sox (which would have scared me).

    I also like how the Yankees, especially lately, don't get caught up in sentimentality. Regardless of what Matsui has done for them in the past (and the most recent past), they didn't think he fit in with their long term plans, so they let him go.

    In one instance you played up the importance of what a team looks like on paper. In another instance you played down the importance of what a team looks like on paper. Whatever, this clearly is going nowhere. I see that as an attempt to create a double standard, clearly you see things differently.

    Not surprised at all. I thought there was practically no chance that they bring back Matsui, because I think they realize the importance, considering their roster, of having a flexible DH spot. While it might be tough to replace Matsui's production in the immediate future, I think this is a good long term decision by the Yankees.

    Fair enough. If this was a Yankee move, I would be much more cautious, wanting confirmation before acknowledging that it was definite. I understand where you're coming from.

    Right. I think this was an excellent move, that will allay the fears of some people here that the Red Sox are not going to go all out to try to win. This gives them, clearly, the superior rotation over the Yankees.

    I think they're one major move away from being pretty much on par with the Yankees.
