This is something I should clarify: when I speak of times, I speak in local team time. When I say 11am, I mean 11am Boston time.

To be clear, starting a game thread the moment the game ends with a win totally works for me. It doesn't have to be the next morning, it could be immediately. The thread existing at 10am the next morning is the goal, how we get there is whatever.

As opposed to the previous default state of the site, you may want to set a custom feed as your Talk Sox landing page. It's that useful. Instead of having to click through the (kinda insanely large now) site, you can tailor a feed to show basically whatever you want: select authors, topics you've followed, fellow users, unread content only... the list goes on. First, to find your personal feed, near the top right of the screen you will see a newspaper icon in the red bar below your user information. That brings you to the default view, which is Unread Content. Here you'll see a variety of options to tailor your custom stream to do almost anything you like on the site. I'll spare you going through each item in detail individually, as it's all quite self-explanatory. You can choose tagged content, type of content (news, forums, blogs, status updates, etc.), read/unread only, content you've participated in or started, followed content, and finally, how it's sorted. Depending what kind of device you're using, you can also choose Condensed or Expanded. Condensed just gives you the title and link while Expanded offers a truncated version of the content as a preview. Once you've decided on your changes, you can save this stream using the save prompt below. You're allowed to have multiple custom streams so name this new stream and it joins the others. Once you're done customizing your stream, Click Stream Options at the top right of the selection drop-down, and your choices become your default custom stream. Every time you click that newspaper or visit your stream, the selections you've made will remain in place. That's it, enjoy the new site!

Talk Sox Tips & Tricks, Part One: Tables! With this series of blog entries, I'm going to try to cover some of the features of the new site in a few paragraphs. Using the old site, as I'm sure many of you are aware, tables were basically unusable. That has changed! I'll tackle B-Ref tables quickly in this post but you can do similar things with FanGraphs or other sites that use table data (which is how almost all stat sites display their content). First, pop on over to Rafael Dever''s B-Ref page: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/deverra01.shtml I'm going to grab his 2020-2021 season stats. Just above his stat table, you'll see Share & Export. Click and then select Modify, Share, & Export Table. Boom, you can then select what stats you want to display and which you want to remove. I've removed all seasons except the last two. I also removed team and league because "duh". Then click the big X in the top right of the yellow square and you have your filtered table. Grab that table by moving your cursor to the top left of the table (just to the left of Year in this case) and while holding down the button of your mouse/trackpad, drag toward the bottom right of the table. The table will begin to highlight in yellow as you select the cells. Grab them all and let go of the mouse/trackpad. Then copy what has been selected (control+c on Windows, command+c on macOS). Pop over to Brewer Fanatic, start typing a comment, and paste your content (control+v on Windows, command+v on macOS). It might be worth a pickup. I run a Cubs site and what has happened to Neris is somewhat head-scratching, under different tutelage he could be a decent bounce back candidate.

Because we usually do migrations during an offseason, this transition is a bit awkward. We want to get it done as quickly as possible so yeszir can shut down his hosting obligations and the costs contained therein so this Sunday, we're going to shut down the site and hopefully have it back up on the new platform a few hours later. I don't know exactly when this will happen but I'm guessing around 5pm eastern. I don't do the migration work myself (unlike a lot of other work done here), we have a specialist in the software package so I need to work with his availability. So sometime between 3-5pm Sunday, expect to see the site go down and hopefully, we'll be back up and running on the new software by 8-9pm that evening. Make sure you have two things squared away because you'll have to log in differently using the new software: 1. Make sure you know your password! 2. The Sox are 3.5 games out of the third WC and the Royals have an absolutely brutal stretch coming. I'd be quite surprised if the Sox were completely out of contention with nine to go.

A big upgrade with the new software (hopefully coming this Sunday evening?) is that you can copy and paste screencaps right into posts. You can also embed tweets, videos, etc. just by pasting a URL. This is what game threads look like on other sites (when I'm not feeling up to typing an introduction, which I do sometimes). That title format came around organically at Twins Daily as users just kinda settled into a rhythm and started copying one another. I like how informative it is so I stole it for the other sites.

I was looking into it this evening and saw an article quoting Alex Cora saying he thinks Story will make it back before the end of the season. What is the general consensus elsewhere? I was advised on your system (dig the name "MOJO") and it's something we used on the Cubs site for some time (and will probably restart it next season). I'm totally fine with continuing this system, with one small change: can we get the thread up by 11am? I'll pop in later in the morning and if there is no thread, I will create one. As I mentioned in the other thread, consistency of this kind creates habits in users and draws in new users as a result. That's it, if you have any questions or suggestions, please speak up here.

I was looking over this data this morning and it's interesting. It's almost impossible that the Yankees or Orioles can be ousted from a postseason spot so we'll focus on the three central teams instead; Cleveland has the best shot at the ALC division crown but it's far from certain (Twins currently 3GB). Guardians: .509 strength of schedule remaining with some critical matchup. 3 vs NYY, 4 vs MIN, 7 (!) vs KC. Also 2 vs MIL. Twins: .507 strength of schedule remaining. 3 vs BAL, 4 vs CLE, 3 vs KC, 3 vs red-hot Padres, 3 vs Red Sox. Royals: Absolutely obnoxious .527 remaining strength of schedule. Not even gonna break down opponents, the winning percentage speaks for itself. They have far and away the toughest row to hoe. Red Sox: .505 strength of schedule remaining. Kind of amazing none of these teams has a sub-.500 SoS left. Remaining teams include 5 more with BAL, 3 vs NYY, 3 vs MIN, 3 vs AZ, 3 vs NYM, 3 vs HOU. No one has a real advantage down the stretch but it sure looks like KC has the disadvantage.

Our managing editor, Matt Trueblood, is a Cubs fan. I'm a Brewers fan so I have other reasons to dislike the Cards. I also just find their fanbase insufferable. As for the White Sox, they're pretty much hated by Twins fans. No idea if it's reciprocal or not, nor do I care. I try not to interact with White Sox fans after they beat up an opposing base coach the *second* time.

This is something I’d like to address in time but I’m not concerned about it right now. More specific, shorter topics are more welcoming to new users. New additions to the forum just won’t participate in a 70 page thread started five years ago. But again, not something I’m concerned about this moment.

Ah, our Cubs site had a similar policy (that kind of fell apart when the Cubs scuffled early this season). I'm totally okay with continuing this, the only change I ask is to get the game thread up each morning. In my experience, consistency with the time and creation of the game thread increases engagement and posts in each thread. When we took over the Cubs site, game threads often sat in the 30-50 post range. Now they're over 100 posts almost every game.

On the other sites, I pop in every morning and create the game threads. I'm happy to continue that practice over here but don't want to step on toes. Is there any established method or is it just a jump ball every day?
