  1. Riggleman? Great call there, let's have an entitled, whiny manager to go with the entitled, whiny players we have. Ken Macha might be the closest thing to a real replacement going. He did well with the A's back when they were good.` I don't think Valentine's going to happen, although I have no true reason why, just a hunch. But he's a type A personality who won't want a front office telling him how to do things, and I got the feeling that this is a front office that likes to get its hands dirty.
  2. Pretty much. This kind of scenario is the whole reason you put up with a Dan Shaungnessy in the good times. Because occasionally you do need a guy who isn't afraid to point out that the owner's crap stinks too.
  3. You cannot undo what has been done to this team by bringing in more overpriced entitled free agents out after their big payday. Bring in young, hungry kids and old, hungry veterans. That's the recipe that cooked us up two rings. This crew is not desperate enough to win when the chips are down.
  4. People are a bit naive if they think that this team would redevelop Bard as a starter in the big leagues. We'd be looking at at least half a year in AAA for Bard as he reaccustomed himself to his starter's repertoire and proved he could be consistent.
  5. I like Bogaerts' combination of athleticism and power. He wasn't afraid to take a walk either (.064 IsoD, not great, but enough to show he doesn't swing at everything in sight) so that's a good sign for his development as a hitter. He's exactly the kind of player you love to have in your system. I don't think he'll stick at short, but if he doesn't, there's a number of positions he could move down to that would make him useful. And whether anyone outside the org takes him seriously or not, that bat is worth our attention,
  6. I have to admit, when I first heard Tito might be out, the guy I thought of was Pinella. Then I figured that I've been laughed at enough recently around here, so I didn't put it forward.
  7. You know who else apologiszs the next day? Abusive spouses. Shouldn't let them off the hook either. Apologizing does not wipe out misbehavior, especially not systematic misbehavior.
  8. The Yankee troll has the right of it this time.
  9. Toronto's resources aren't THAT limited, and he did a bad job with them. I'm sorry, I'd rather go for a fresh face than the guy who signed the Vernon Wells and Alexis Rios contracts. Ricciardi is widely considered one of the worst general managers in baseball.
  10. I don't think the Reds are likely to think of Youkilis as a third baseman at this point. If they do, it might happen. Don't forget they have Joey Votto.
  11. I can't agree with that. We've had great pitchers over the years. We had three very good ones this year before Buchholz went down. The issue has been that we have a hitter's park, which can make it hard to flesh out a staff Also TB has drafted well above the median. We do OK at the draft, But Tampa has nailed it for several consectuve season. They really need to because it's the only way they're going to wind up with premium talent. Sometimes I think that the ability of big markets to go out and sign top players makes them lazy about developing their own. The Sox fell into that over the last 2-3 years. They need to turn it around, quickly.
  12. I do not understand this frantic eagerness to trade Ellsbury at all. If anything we should be looking to build a team around him.
  13. Vin Scully, still the best in the biz.
  14. Their goalie stole that game. The Bruins were flying, and Peverley is your seconed line right winger. Marchand-Bergy-Peverley was electric..
  15. This is becoming too elaborate and fantastical. I suspect this will be a quiet offseason tradewise and we're going to wind up graced with Lackey's presence again next year. The sad fact is that the Lackey and Crawaford fiascos limit our options rather severely in terms of adding more players. Henry's financial depth isn't bottomless, and again for the second year straight, no playoff revenue -- no ROI. We're going to be looking to drop payroll, not add it.
  16. One team that stands out as one that could use both Youkilis and Lavarnway is the Mariners.
  17. If we go after a bigtime FA, it's far less likely to be Fielder or Pujols, and more likely to be Jose Reyes, just looking at team needs. I think we need more character guys though. Fielder, Puhols and Reyes are all center-of-attention types, and we already have too many of those.
  18. I know. Read what I said again.
  19. I don't understand it. Every time there's a managerial opening, someone mentions Bobby freaking Valentine. There's a dozen dream jobs he could have wound up with if he was even remotely interested. This is a complete dead end.
  20. Valentine would be a terrible fit for Boston. He would work best with some small market squad I think. The big leagues have kind of passed him by.
  21. Let's not forget that first rounders in baseball aren't nearly the same thing as they are in, say, football or hockey. Besides, many of this crop of rookies (guys like Giavotella and Salvador Perez) aren't first rounders, they're guys we could have drafted or signed. I still think Arbuckle is a good candidate for a team that could use to revamp its farm.
  22. Lavarnway is not their eventual backup catcher. If they can't do better than that for playing time with the guy, they'll flip him like we did with Andy Marte despite having Mike Lowell.
  23. Mike Napoli is kinda what I'm hoping to see from Lavarnway, but then, Napoli is a better catcher than he gets credit for, his issue has been how to preserve his unlimited power potential, rather than any deficiency of skill, and I see Lavarnway having much the same controversy as he goes through his big league career. Not only is his bat elite, but while his catching skills are raw, there's nothing stopping him from improving them in the big leagues the way Tek did and Salty is doing. No one remains a snapshot of what they were when they debuted as a rookie, and while Lavarnway's defensive form is not great now, I see no reason he can't improve on it. He does have the talent to get much better if he can put it together.
  24. What I see here are a lot of wild, crazy ideas with no real chance of success, a fair number of former players that have not defeinitely expressed any real interest in managership, and Ken Macha.
