  1. Good point, I forgot about Arroyo too. My point is that none of the pitching prospects the Sox part with whether it be through trade or DFA really seem to bite them in the ass and a lot of the guys they hold onto tend to turn out successful. Yea, the Gagne trade sucked and I think it gave the FO a healthy respect for the importance of psyche to a closer.
  2. The FO has done a pretty good job in determining which pitching prospects to jettison anyway. Kason Gabbard hasn't done anything in Texas and after NL hitters had time to figure him out, Cla Meredith has done much either, Lenny DiNardo never amounted to anything and neither did Casey Fossum. I can't imagine the departure of Pauley biting the Sox in the ass
  3. But the Canadian dollar is struggling compared to the American one meaning the Jays have to spend that much more for free agents
  4. True, but its a minimal one
  5. Personally, I don't think Dice-K can possibly be as good and definitely not better but the fact that Beckett should be better would nullify that
  6. The fact that ownership has put the team on a very strict budget doesn't help and when you consider that the Sox, Yankees and Rays are 3 of the best teams in baseball and all happen to be in their own division, a 90 win season very realistically only helps them beat out Baltimore
  7. Decent? Yes. Contending? No.
  8. If everything goes right, the Sox are positioned to do very well in 2009. But the problem is, chances are everything won't go right. Can Beckett rebound? Can Dice-K possibly be as good? Will Lester have a 2008 hangover? Will Smoltz, Saito and/or Penny resemble their former selves? Will Buchholz finally get it all together? Will Lowell's hip hold up? Will Ortiz produce without Manny? Will Ellsbury make significant progress? Did Youkilis just have his best year? Can Drew's back hold up? The Sox need a lot of these things to go their way to be contenders in 2009
  9. Whatever they get back wouldn't equal the value of having maybe the best pitcher in baseball, at least not right away
  10. I agree completely, I can't see the Jays making a serious run for the foreseeable future and its in their best interest to get a king's ransom for Halladay
  11. On top of all that, Ricciardi wants to extend Halladay beyond 2010 but ownership has said no. Take that for what its worth
  12. what good is a bullpen without a rotation and an abysmal offense? heres their projected lineup Scutaro - ss Hill - 2b Rios - rf Wells- cf Lind - lf Rolen - 3b Overbay - 1b Barajas - c ?????? - dh
  13. McGowan is supposed to be ready right around Smoltz-time but who knows what theyll get from him
  14. wouldnt shock me if they finished higher than the Jays this year though, they are truly going to be awful
  15. he had a .192 OBP against lefties last year, not a bad lefty specialist
  16. in the end, the Sox are a business and theyre looking to capitalize on the brand while the marketability of it is highest, its striking while the iron is hot I can appreciate the fact that they kept a classic look to it at least
  17. their order doesnt look too bad though, they have a good heart in Mora, Huff, Markakis and Scott
  18. Senor Beavis, que estas haciendo en mi classe?
  19. a squares contest, swell
  20. I still want JD Drew Pedroia Ortiz Youkilis Bay Lowell Lowrie Varitek Ellsbury until Jacoby starts living up to some potential
  21. when is truck day again?
  22. which there won't be

  24. I'm curious to see what happens with the situation behind Varitek. I imagine they'll let Bard, Brown and Kottaras battle for the backup spot in ST or just let Bard and Brown battle and let Kottaras get as many ABs in Pawtucket as possible and hope that he progresses enough where having Varitek make $3 mil to backup Kottaras next season becomes an attractive option.
  25. It buys them time to see if Kottaras either continues to improve or if he's topped out
