Well I was wrong in saying that I did not have to listen to the Slapshot cover to know that the original was superior.
I just listened to it.
MVP is wrong about it being superior.
While I do sort of like the Dickies type guitar and the Dick Manitoba style vocals at the end, the rest of of this cover pretty much blows.
The bass intro was off, the vocals were literal garage shouting, and drum production had little depth.
Done this way, the song has no real meaning. Grace Slick had soul oozing out of each word. These guys were amateur hour.
