I remember the days of baseball if a starter had an ERA over 4, he was usually sent down.

The Sox will be lucky to not be 7-8 games under .500 by the end of June

Dalbec and "keep it rolling" in the same sentence. That's just nuts.

So do I, but then I also remember 4 man rotations and Tiant going the distance in a 15 inning loss to the Angels.

The Yankees could go 0-162 and it wouldn't be enough

Of course, an ERA of over 4 being average is just a side effect of having 30 teams in MLB.

Cmon, he kept it rolling right to the shortstop.

And 4 days later he's back on the mound. Back in the days where men were men and so were pitchers.

Good point. 'Rolling' has more than one definition.

    Bad defense is contagious.

With that in mind Wheeler is a throw back to those days.

Nah. It was June of 1974. Darrell Johnson gave him a break and gave him 4 days off after that game. Tiant pitched a complete game win against Vida Blue (who also went the route) on June 10th. Then the aforementioned game against the Angels on June 14 followed by another win against Blue on the 18th. Tiant “only” went 10 in that one and didn’t pitch the bottom of the 11th in a Sox win.

    8 days, 34+ innings

Ryan wimped out of that game in the 12th or 13th.

Don't forget Tiant's baserunning skills. Often overlooked, but never forgotten. I loved Tiant.

And his cigar smoking skills. Keeping those things lit in the shower was amazing.

    He was fun to watch.

That's how you execute a shutdown inning.
