Thread: 2024 Yankees Season Thread

The Yankees made a serious effort to improve their team. And it shows. The Sox have not made a serious effort to improve their team. And it shows.
    Old school is good school.

This is easy to explain, even for John Henry: The Yankees are the most profitable team in baseball, so they can afford all the great players. The Red Sox are only third-most profitable, behind NY and LA...

... so Boston is only richer than 27 other clubs -- and even worse, only has a 1 in 30 chance to ever recruit and sign actual good ballplayers who aren't rehabbing, injury-prone or doomed by a higher power to career-risking malfunctions while performing athletic exercises like throwing or diving for a ball, swinging a bat, riding stationary bikes or walking down dugout steps.

    Just about.

I mentioned Gil only because he was in competition with Houck for top SP'er in 2024.

Still have half a season left and neither pitcher has thrown a ton of innings in a season before. I'd guess they don't finish within the top 5 by year end.

Problem with the Yankees is that they have nothing of value to trade at the deadline. Spencer Jones is a bust at AA and their other prospects stink. They need bullpen help, they need another starter. I guess they don't need to add anyone to the offense, but they do have a few holes and no easy way to fix them. They also need guys like Stanton and Judge to stay healthy but that usually doesn't happen. Want to trade for a 1b? OK, but who are you trading? When your prospects suck, you can't add high end talent at the trade deadline.

Dominguez is the Yankees best trade chip and they probably should trade him while he is at his peak in terms of value, but Cashman will probably hold on to him. I guess Gil would bring back a nice return, but Cashman is unlikely to move him.

Some Yankee fans insisted their farm was better than ours!

Similar theme with the Yanks MLB squad, injuries are piling up in the minors. 3 of the Yankees top 5 prospects are on the shelf (Dominguez, Hampton, Pereira) and they would all be call up options right now. Ben Rice has come in to play first base and has looked promising. Caleb Durbin could have been called up to fill in one of the underperforming infield spots but he got hurt. Same with Beeter in the bullpen.

The Yanks probably don't have the ammo to trade for a top pitcher or bat unless they're willing to deal Dominguez (which I doubt they'd do). But they do have a lot of talent in the lower minors that they could probably use to get bullpen help and a competent bat at a corner infield spot. That should be the minimum they need to get by (assuming Judge/ Soto/ Cole all stay healthy, which is not a given).
