Can you imagine the outrage had the deal been nixed?

What would be the basis for vetoing the deal? How would that be any worse than the ridiculous deferred money deals some teams do? Chris Davis is getting paid by Orioles for like 20 more years

Well, at least now you know the league is on the lookout for deals that try to artificially lower the AAV.

Yes, but did that have any impact on the AAV of his deal, or is it just a matter for the accounts payable department.

Like how Bobby Bonilla is not part of the Mets AAV.

But the whole point that they were intentionally losing the AAV is ridiculous. They still had to pay that lower yet still exorbitant amount for longer, meaning it has the chance to impact the luxury tax in more seasons.

So now if any deal can impact the luxury tax, it would get mixed? If the Sox replace Bogaerts with a minimum wage shortstop, they are clearly trying to avoid the luxury tax. So will that get vetoed too?

Maybe Judge can play 14 years- the last 7-9 at DH. The league should not be the ones to judge Judge.

This reeks of the Bowie Kuhn trade nixes between the A's and Yanks/Sox back in the 70's.

Maybe so. But I think you have to draw the line somewhere on stretching contracts to reduce AAV.

I get that, but many players can still be a decent DH at age 43. Judge is the best hitter in MLB. I'd suspect he could easily be one that could.

Had they offered him a 20 year deal, okay.

If that is their idea, then they should set an age and make a rule before this happens- not after.

As the popular current saying goes, this just isn't a hill I'm willing to die on.

Ok but someone needs to explain to me how Bogaerts’ contract doesn’t do the same thing. Or are we supposed to believe the Padres still think Bogaerts will be worth $25.5 mill at age 42?

I guess nobody is expected to play past 42.
